Don't get me started

My daughters and I spend some time most Saturday mornings working at a no kill cat rescue. We set up the tables and put cages out and put cats into them so people can see them. Once we're all done setting up the girls get to love on the kitties until it's time to leave. We've only been doing it a couple of months but there've been a couple of dropoffs that really had me wondering. One was a woman who had a cat for 6 years and couldn't keep him because her daughter was allergic. 6 years and she's just now discovering her daughter's allergic? One was a man who had three cats and he was returning the one he had adopted from the organization 6 years prior because he was moving to Chicago and couldn't take the cat on the plane. OK, so surely there was some other way to transport the cat? And what about his other 2 cats? Hmmm..... Well really, to me a pet is a lifetime commitment and you only give one up in very extreme circumstances. At least they had the class to drop their cats off somewhere where they would be taken care of but, really don't get me started!

Ain't that the truth! How do you think I ended up with so many cats? At least the 16 I fostered last year that found new homes, the people know that if they can't keep them, they have to bring them back. Tho I hope not to me - I've already got 26!!!

Weellll, first, there's no husband to object, no landlord, just a couple of roommates, one who is just as bad as I am. The other one isn't paying rent so she really can't object too much... besides, she has a couple of her own. It isn't easy, but one is supposed to go to a new home soon.

Oh wow, how do you keep up with them? My husband fought the third one before we were able to keep him, so I don't see us getting any more!

Well, firstly, well done on the good work you and your daughters are doing. I'd love to help in the way you are but would probably spend the whole time crying! Personally, I would never abandon or rehome any of my pets unless I was about to die or something so I'm not fond of people who do. However, I do always try to see the good in people. With allergies sometimes they develop over time when you're exposed to something so the woman may have been telling the truth. The main thing is that she brought the cat to a safe place where it has a chance of finding a new loving home, rather than dumping it something or worse. The guy with three cats may have been able to find homes for the first two but not the third, but it does seem a bit suspicious.

I'm happy to report that the guy with the three cats had a change of heart and came back and picked her up! Maybe he read my post on MyLot. lol

Hi dawnald, it is a nice work you and your daughter are doing. I agree with you in what you are saying but some people are egoists and think only about their selves. As you say how someone after 6 years discovering just now her daughter's allergic? and the man that give away a cat after 6 years? they don't know how to love somebody that doesn't is their selves. Those kind of people can't have a pet because after a time they change their's mind but animals have feelings too. It is so sad. Keep giving you love to those poors pets and you will be rewarded. Cheers my dear.

I think the woman who said her daughter was allergic was probably lying unless her daughter wasn't living with her those 6 years. And the other guy, I suppose he gave that cat back and not the other 2 because our organization takes them back and so she was the easiest to get rid of. Just a guess. But obviously some people don't view pets the same way that I do.

There are a lot of things I don't understand about people; that's why I like cats. I don't understand why he couldn't take the cat on the plane. Maybe they only had space for 2 cats? I could never give up one of my cats. I love all of them. I hope the cats that were turned in get really good forever homes, much better than the ones they were kicked out of. What is worse is when the people just dump the cat. Our last baby, Paisley, was tossed into a dumpster. Probably why she has such a loud voice. She has the cutest calico face that always makes me smile even though she just hates to be held.

I totally agree with you in every single word you say there, but see some people are really nasty and they do not even care about themselves how would they care about little babies as kitties or little dogs and all. I love so much animals that I cannot work in organizations like rescues or Vets, etc. because I would suffer so much to see them hurt, just kills me. I personally adopted a cat that whoever had it before took his claws off, I think gave him pills or something, he looks weird and abandoned him after 12 years, so I tell you do not get me started! LOL

That is awesome that you help out at the rescue! I am sure they are glad to have you there. I have never done that before. It sounds like it would be nice to do! I wish that we had one closer by! I am very glad that they brought the cats to the shelter. Lots of folks are'nt very nice to cats. I have 2 cats: Tony Is my old man cat he is like 18 years old now Gizmo is 8 She is my little body guard! It is nice to get to talk to another cat lover!

My daughter also works as a volunteer at a no-kill shelter where we live. She comes homes and tells me the most appalling stories about people who want to give up their pets for adoption and, especially, for those who want to adopt. Although many pets do go to good homes for the remainder of their lives, there are many pets who are returned for some inane reason or another. The shelter is over-run with cats and kittens and older dogs who no one seems to want. Everyone wants a cute little puppy, but those little puppies are few and far between. Whenever I go there, I am reminded how important it is to spay or neuter.

It's also important to train those cute little puppies. Without training they end up back at the shelter as unmanageable 1 and 2 year olds.

This type of behavior happened to me over and over again when I worked at the vets, but there they were having these poor creatures euthanized for some dumb reason or another. I had already rescues 4 females for this in a small apartment, and so had the other girls I had worked with so I could only leave the room when this happened, yet those faces still are in my mind and this is after 16 years have passed. I try not to think of it because I am a chronic depressant and it makes me very very sad. I have a 16 year old who is losing ground a bit but I get up all night and feed her small amounts night and day and she seems to be holding her own. I know lots of people would put her down but as long as she is happy and not in pain I will do anything to keep her going. And she appreciates it, she still shows off for me and sleeps by my head every night which is something she just started to do. (sleep by my head) I love all my cats and could not dream of them being in a pound or the S.P.C.A. without me. People only think of theirselfs in situations that you have mentioned. My nasty mother-in-law bought a condo in a differant town once for her son (my husband) mostley and me because he won't get rid of me. She told me by email that I would have to get rid of two of my cats who are all geriactrics, so you know what that meant. I was so angry I told her to pick one of her 4 kids and I would come down and get rid of it for her just like she assumed I would to my cats. I know it's was bit extreme but what did she think I would do? We do not speak now but that is OK I don't like people who feel animals are disposable. Any way you are doing a very good thing by taking your daughters to the S.P.C.A. and giving those poor animals some love. My hats off to you, keep it up. ceciliah

If my mother-in-law told me I had to get rid of one of my animals, I would remind her where the front door was! :-)

I agree with your Conversation, could you comment on mine if you get a chance, it was about people leaving their stray cats to fend for themselves because our apartments changed their pet policies and now no longer allow them. I did have a cat that my father adopted and I did not have an allergie then when I was 17 but now I have a vicious allergy to cats where it feels like tiny daggers are stuck in my eyes and my eyes get so bloodshot so even though I still do appreciate cats they are totally out of the picture when it comes to getting any pets. Im a fish person and Im really content with them and its been my passion for 10 years now and I think having 2 kids eliminated the chance of getting a dog because then I feel like I couldnt enjoy it as much. I think people are more loose in their standards of cats and to many I think their just a temporary source of amusement. Look at the apartments I live at, there were no dogs outside and I havent seen any strays (I take a lot of walks with the kids) but there has been 6 strays and its like they couldnt even take the energy to bring it to a better place, most pet stores have adoption centers.

most people are just irresponsible for their actions...many people can even take care of their kids properly...just look at how many messed up kids out there..an animal is like a baby that doesnt grow up...need more care. most of these people take these animals that they dont really want out of loneliness or to fill a void. and when they have better things to do, they get rid of it somehow...

yeah, if you get a pet, it is a lifetime commitment. no different than having a child in the sense that just because you don't want it or don't want to take care of it you drop it off somewhere. But as you said atleast they are dropping them off somewhere safe.

yep it's the ones that get dumped in a field or left locked in a house that have it worse. or are dropped at shelters where they euthanize...
