Minimum Wage, are you on it?

The minimum pay that an employee can expect from his or her employers is the 'minimum wage'. However, a lot of employees are complaining that this is not enough for their needs and so forth. Most minimum wage is alright for a single status person but not good for a married one.
So, are you on minimum wage? Is it enough for you or for your family?
Lucky for me that I am receiving about three times the minimum wage here. And I have some online jobs that pay about twice the minimum wage so I guess that over all I am receiving five times the minimum wage. I save some of the money for my future house and spend some for quality time with my husband. I'm happy with it.
How about you?

I have had to come up with alternative ways to make money these days. When you apply for numerous jobs, and none seem enthused about hiring you, coming up with all kinds of excuses as to why they can't--you find something to do on the side. You mylot, you go to associatedcontent. If that is all you can do until you can do better, then by golly, do that.
If you are good at working with your hands, utilize a temp agency, such as Labor Ready, or Snelling, or Kelly.
No matter how bad the economy is...and I don't have to tell you a recession is going on--please, find something to do!

And I can understand why people complain that minimum wage is not enough. After your rent is paid, the light bill, gas bill, and sometimes, depending on where you live, the water bill... And don't even think about gas for your car...
The minimum wage is not enough to pay for all of that, esp. when wages are staying the same, and the cost of living is going up.

Well, I make about three dollars above the min. wage status. Where I am at or what I am makeing is barly enough for me being single. Its hard to say how other people who are on min wage are making it. I think that min wage should be rasied more for the people who have to take care of a family.

The minimum wage here is $8 an hour. I make well above that, but because I am self employed, I have a bunch of other expenses.

Hi there joyadalia!
I think I am blessed to have a job where I get more than the minimum wage. I am still single and I live with my parents. I believe that the amount I get from my job is just enough for my needs and wants. I also have extra for savings and a little investment. It's sad that there are people who earn just the minimum wage which is not really enough for their basic needs. But what is worse is that there are people who are actually receiving less than the minimum. They work like a dog and they are not compensated well. With prices skyrocketing day to day, there is a need for the government to really look into the welfare of our workers.

Yes, you are quite right. A lot of people are working below minimum wage and work long hours without benefits.

You mean to say that you didn't ask for a raise? 9 years is enough to ask a raise from minimum wage, you see. And you are right, what happens when you have a family someday?

I make more than min wage. I can NOT imagine trying to live on that amount, I think it is $6.50 now. Even two people earning that couldn't support a household. I am not a supporter of minimum wage, I think the market should control this. I do not have a college degree and I make enough to support my household. I know plenty of people that earn enough, they just have to work harder and develop skills.

Yes, minimum wage is really below what wage can support a family :-( It's good that you don't have a college degree and yet earn big. I know a lot of people who have finished their degrees in expensive universities but are now living on minimum wage.

I make well above minimum wage. I could never suppor my family on minimum wage. When the law was started for minimum wage it was never created for people to survive on it. The main purpose was for children who were working so that they wouldn't get taken advantage the law was developed that you could not pay someone less then that wage. It is very unfortunate that some people actually have to support themselves and their family on minimum wage and I believe if you are living off it you would probably fall close to the poverty level.

No this would never be enough for us, I have a family of 4 and no way would that work. I make about 3 times that and I couldn't imagine anything less. It would be such a struggle to make ends meet and i'd feel as if I was working for nothing. Rent and the cost of everything is so high these days...even one whole check of mine would cover just the rent. Nope couldn't do it.

Now, if you want to maintain your middle class lifestyle you need atleast two incomes. That you are in MyLot shows that you are interested in increasing your family income although many would argue that they are not here for money. Anyways money is important. A single income family may not be able to buy various necessities and luxuries required today. For example, every ten years you need to buy a new car, washing machine, TV, computer peripherals so on. With single income you cannot manage to buy all these goods and at the same time save for your family. So, I believe that double income is required. Always, your spouse may not be able to work if she prefers to stay at home. There are stay at home moms who can do a bit by joining online work companies and support their husbands. With my online job sometimes I receive more salary than what my job pays for me. Moreover, I can use my spare time effectively so that I need to indulge in gossips, which some of my colleagues do. I feel that one needs to plan for the future. Even a single income families need to plan in the form of longterm investments in the stock market. Fortunately, I am able to save my salary, which I have invested in mutual funds and stock markets. I spend my extra income for my daily necessities. I am fortunate to receive good amount of extra income. In the absence of this additional income, situation would have been much serious.
With extra income you can face unexpected problems of life. Recently, my daughter was hospitalized and had to spend good amount of money and I could manage this with my extra income. So, if you are prepared for hardwork you can certainly earn more and can plan for the future.

It's a good thing that both my husband and I have a stable income. And because we don't have children yet, we can save for our dream house. ;O) But it takes hard work, you are right. After an 8-hour work I still have to write my articles for my second work. But each paycheck is very fulfilling and I am really glad.

Yes, that's a good reason. You can check my profile for sites that really pay for your online activities. You can also visit craiglist. That's where I got my other job and it still pays twice the minimum wage.
