I have been shutting off everything lately when going out of the apartment and I unplug the microwave, unplug the tv (LVD, not energy star) and I starting turning off the red button to the surge protector with all our other plugs. Well, my daughter saw me do it plenty of times and one day did it when we were ready to go out and I congradulated her but now she does it whenever she 'thinks' were going out and its just become more of a pain and I regret I allowed her to get into this habit. Ever find yourself in this situation?

Wow, I have never heard of unplugging everything when you leave home. How much time does that take? I am assuming that this cuts down on your utility bill or something? It would have to be a lot for me to go thru those changes! Like over 50%...lol. that just seems to be a lot of trouble. OMG I think I would be glad that she figured out how to do it so that I would have some help shutting everything off and then cutting it back on upon return. That would probally take 30 minutes each way. I am hoping that you don't leave home everyday, as I would. Also is this done for extended stays or everytime you leave home?

No I do this everytime I go out but it is not time consuming because I have my tv, the cable box, the dvd player, my computer and monitor, another comcast box for internet all connected to a surge protector so its just a red button that turns it off and my daughter picked that up. The only downside to this is that the box for the HD takes longer to reset once turned on so you cant see your cable listings right away, it takes about 15 minutes for them to come back.

I see. But what is the purpose for doing this? And maybe it seems so outrageous to me because I live in a 4000 sq ft house and I can't think of that many outlets that don't have something attached. What about like bedside lamps, kitchen appliances etc. Do you unplug those too?

The only other thing I unplug is our microwave and the reason I do this is because many appliances and electronic items will still consume energy even when off but left plugged in because they use a small amount of electric so that settings are saved, if you had to manually reset the settings on your tv every time you turned it on you would not like that at all, well that is why. I also do it because I want to conserve energy as much as possible, why waste it is you dont have to, it takes me not more than a minute to do this.

I am the mother of 3, they are all pretty much grown and 2 of them are out of the house already but when they where little ones I had 3 shadows that would follow me around and copy everything I did or said. I believe that God makes little one's like that just to keep us adults in line! But they are only young like that once so keep on your toes and enjoy every minute of them growing up

I know exactly what you mean! My 2 year old daughter copies most anything I do and I try to explain to her why I do it, such as I pour dish detergent into the dishwasher so I can wash dishes... well a few days later, I find her in my kitchen pouring the whole entire box of detergent into the dishwasher! I about lost it, but she turned around with a big smile and said "See Mommy!? I did it!" I couldnt help but to laugh, but I did regret ever teaching her how to wash dishes...lol.
