I got my electric bill today and almost fainted. I knew it was going to be high because we ran the air conditioning nearly every day in July, but I was not prepared for what I saw. My electric bill is $412.00. I am going to call on Monday because that is rediculas, wish me luck. So was your electric bill shocking as well? Share the amount if you like. Was it way higher than last year?

In a way I am lucky as I pay as I go for my electric through a meter and a card. A lot of people will argue that this actually would cost more, but at least this way I know where I stand with it. Every time I have gone onto quarterly bills for it I have ended up in debt. I put £20 GBP a week in my meter ($40) but the meter is due for adjusting as when I got my quarterly statement I am £160 ($320) in credit with the company, which means that they owe me money!

My recent bill was $318 and thats about $75 more than I usually pay. But with fuel prices rising so much these days, everybodys bill is rising too. The kilowatt usage was about the same as usual on my bill it just cost more per unit than it did last month. Maybe try using some ceiling fans or take a cool shower during the day when you are hot so you dont have to use your a/c as much. Good Luck!

Yes, lady. you're electric bill is way too high. We pay a regular bill of $140 or that is about more than 6000 Philippine pesos. my husband blows his top, everytime the electric bill arrives. Here in the Philippines, the climate is like summer whole year round. So we have to have a centralized airconditioning. plus the fact that our house is only 300 meters away from the beach. also, Davao City is never hit with typhoon being covered by Mount Apo, the highest landform in the Phil. So its always hot, hot , hot! We only have been here for around 5 months. we move a lot because of my husband's work. Our house is really in Manila, the capital. Our bill there, was much lower then. Good luck in calling...

$140 would be great this time of year. I imagine you get some nice breezes being by the water.

You're hoping it doesn't come back on you later when it's only $5/month now? That doesn't even cover their administration costs of reading your meter and sending out your bill!! Have you called them to find out what's going on because I'm pretty sure it's not going to be pretty when they figure it out. If you haven't called them, they might not be willing to work with you since you didn't start asking questions 8 months ago.

That is strange, do you have a neighbor that is really close to your house? Maybe some how they are providing power to your home.

We have called plenty of times and asked them what is going on. They say, and you are complaining. We have informed them so many times and they say its no mistake. They even ask us are you never home. I have no idea whats going on, but we'v been paying it. We are always home and we use air conditioning all the time, the tv is always on and our lights stay on.

It was probably close to $200.00 for us, but since we have all new appliances including a new air conditioning and heating system, are bill should be lower than most people's electric bills.

OMG where do you live? The highest bill I have ever had was $169 last summer. My bills are usually around $115 - $135 which is pretty good since I live in a hot climate (Florida) most of the year. I have central air which both heats and cools. Your bills is way too high. Maybe you could figure out why it is so high and make some adjustments. Good luck.

My electric bill averages at least $300 - $370 every month. We need air conditioning all day and night as it is hot here. It sucks and it seems like the prices for everything is going up! Have a great day and happy myLotting!!

In our area was a billing error and they acknowledged it and published a message in the paper about it the day the bills had gone out, promising to send a new bill within a day or two. Some people still got shocked when they saw they supposively owed in the thousands for their electricity, lol. First off, check off all the things here, especially the first couple to make sure there are no differences in billing compared to the prior months. You want to be well prepared when you talk with them on Monday. They can be very sneaky and suggest a number of weird things before acknowledging a mistake. Most electric companies had a major rate increase starting July 1st. One of the previous bills may have a notification on that, maybe even this one in the very small print. Or check the paper. It's published somewhere. There may also be a new or increased tax added on. Most communities have been increasing taxes in order to deal with the revenue shortage they have incurred in this bad economy. Anyhow, there are several factors for the bill to go up. One is misreading the meter. Ours is automatic, but you can still go and check. You can read the meter yourself. Pull the previous bills and compare what the meter standing was, go outside and check the meter yourself. You should be able to see the numbers without having to open up something. You should pull previous bills and see, if they are estimated (that note could be well hidden but should be on there). Then this could be an adjustment because they finally got around to reading the meter. You can also calculate rates over time compared to usage and figure out descrapancies and errors. Also the reading time frame varies. If you still have actual people coming to read the meter, they might have come earlier the previous month/ later this month to accomodate vacation shortages. The longer time frame can add significantly. We once had a bill covering 40 days of usage followed by one for 20 days of usage the next month. You could also have an electric item, including your A/C on the frizz. For the last two years, our bill was quite high. We had work done on the A/C/heat pump, which reduced our bill a bit when it finally was done right. But a big item was, when our water heater broke. We got a new one and saved on average $60 on each of the last three bills compared to last year (and there was a rate increase here). The energy saving water heaters really pay quickly for themselves:) July is also the month where the kids are out of school and parents try to stay at home with the kids. There is more computer/TV/game console use. Do you have a pool? One with a filter? Another electricity sucker. Our bill was $73, but we weren't home for half of the month. It probably would have been around $120/130 otherwise, also with the A/C running all month. Still better than the $200plus last year for July. It pays to look into replacing some energy suckers like A/Cs, water heaters, fridges, freezers, dish washers.... Good luck!

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed response. Our furnace is rather old and we were told when we replaced the water heater nearly 2 years ago (we had him take a quick look at the furnace when he was here) that it would not last much longer. So perhaps part of the problem was the furnace. We have not been running air since we go this bill, so hopefully the next bill will be way lower.

I could have been better about the air conditioning, we ran it every day in July except for 2 days. There were times I could have turned it off, but did't so it is kind of my fault in that way, but last July we did the same and the bill was only $268.00.

Your electric bill is just... shocking. I think my mom would be smoking angry once she sees our bill would be that high. Our average monthly bill would be around $80 - 110. And now that we have more electric equipments at home, I think our electric bill would be higher next month.

My electric bill has been running around $80 each month, even with window air conditioners and fans running constantly. I think a lot of it has to do with how many appliances are electric and things like that. We have the top half of a house, two bedrooms kitchen, living room and bath. The insulation is shot and it's like an oven up there, yet the bills remain reasonable. The air conditioners are the only electrical heavy use appliances we have besides the refrigerator. Even my mother's electric bill, with a full house and basement, electric water heater and stove, was only (I say only in comparison to yours) $229. She even uses an oxygen concentrator at night since she has to be on oxygen round the clock.

Yes, very high. I am on the budget plan, so I pay the same amount each month, so it really doesn't affect me until they do an evaluation. And that is about every 6 months. Then it goes up or down. It depends on the usage. It really helps a lot so for it has always been reasonable.
