I use Linux as well as Windows. I like linux better as it is a free user software and so developed by users from different places, ideas and skills. There you can customize it to yur needs, better than windows. Also it gives you opportunity to play with kernel, whereas windows kernel is untouchable. Also all the applications like Office required for Linux can be obtained for free as downloads

It was 6 years ago when I start to use Linux. Back then I only want to try, but then I found that linux is enjoyable... It's free and customable, but there's one thing about linux that time I didn't like. Its GUI is memory hungry (i was using KDE GUI 2002-2004). Then I learn about Gnome (was soo ugly that day) which offer little memory usage (at the cost of ugly UI). Today Gnome is soo sweet!
Today linux has arise in term of GUI and performance. More application now available in GUI, therefore it is easier these day to start migrating to linux. I use OpenOffice Writer daily. When it come to entertainment (video/music) I prefer VideoLAN.One thing doesn't change... Linux only have little games to choose...

actually it experts use linux because mainly the saource code is open, so they can tweak and enhance the OS according to their needs.
windows are a lot better for the common users, and everyone's used to them.
but with ubuntu and edubuntu (linux modified versions) emerging, windows is supposed to face hard times in times ahead. the best feature for linux is that its a freeware.

I use Linux (Ubuntu!) mostly, but I do have a dual boot system with XP. I only go into windows for games, everything else is done in Linux. People try to say that Linux is hard to learn. That's not true. What is true is that most people come from Windows to Linux and then expect Linux to be just like Windows. Well, it's not. Unfortunately (and I know this from personal experience) you have to unlearn all the windows stuff to learn Linux. Sometime when I go into Windows now, I am annoyed at how difficult it is to do something that I could do with great ease in Linux....but I digress.

If you want to try out linux without formatting your drive, try a live CD/DVD from one of the distros (like Fedora). It's a boot CD so you can run linux without touching your hard drive.
http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora - has links to downloads to the fedora live CDs

I prefer Microsoft only because I have been told that Linux is good for computer programmers. Plus I don't know much about Linux I know more about Microsoft. And the computers that I have at home are all Microsoft operating system like Microsoft windows.

I would suggest having both. Some programs will only work on windows but if you want to try linux, what do you have to lose?

Linux is useful for mostly security purpose and the main reason is command oriented you can do the things by using commands this will be helpful for technical persons so that they can learn the architecture of operating system in system side programming.

I use Microsoft as well, i herd that for every one Linux/Mac program there are 10 more available for Microsoft(windows). For a student Microsoft would be the ultimate choice. Also Microsoft has load of more games than the others.

I'm using Windows XP. I did a lot of research on Linux OS before because of Windows Vista and future Windows version. When I first knew that Windows Vista begins require faster Computer Hardwares, I have thought that my computer running Windows XP will be outdated when the time comes and the future Windows version may require faster Computer Hardwares and more Computer Power than Windows Vista. I then began researching other operation systems. This was the first time that I read about Linux and Unix OS during my research. I learned that the most OSes are free except Windows and they don't require faster Computer Hardwares like Windows Vista. As time goes by, I tried lots of Linux and Unix, sometimes BSD distributions. At last, I chose Ubuntu Linux Operating System as my permanent OS. Right now, I'm using both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux. There are two reasons why I use them both. First is that the majority of the applications runs on the Windows. Another reason is that when the application I want to run is commercial, I turn to Ubuntu to try the alternative.

if u loves windows go for it, but if u want change go for linux. i also use linux. but i dont know all commands that used in linux. so i use different linux versions such as ubuntu to linspire or knoppix etc. but in my case i use these os only for 3 or 4 weeks and then i format my comp and instal another os for more application in linux. different linux version have different softwares. or else u can download and instal softwares. after that i only use winxp nor win vista. winxp is most suitable for easy use.

I have a dual boot system with Fedora 8 and Windows XP. I personally prefer linux. It's lighter on my system than resource hungry XP, so it runs faster. It rarely locks up, or exceptions out. It is more stable, and more secure than XP, and is infinitely more customizable than windows could ever hope to be (due to being open source).
I can do just about everything in linux that I can do in windows, and a few things more. It also has the best price tag of all: Free.
That said, I do keep windows around for a few programs that I can't run in linux (well I can, but windows emulators tend to be more trouble than they're worth..). I use windows primarily for photoshop and eve (http:/www.eve-online.com), although EVE is porting to linux which is one less thing to run in windows..
I also have a LiveDVD of Games Knoppix for my kids. It's a boot dvd so it starts up with everything already running and functional. Actually if you're looking to play with linux this is probably a good way to test the waters. It is old though, and linux has come a long way in the 3 or so years since games knoppix was abandoned.

i haven't tried linux, but i guess its pretty much difficult to use, because there are more programs for microsoft that i have seen on the net.. i use microsoft because its suits all my needs as a student and its easy to use... but linux i think is well protected from viruses and its used from those who are really good in using the computers, like the techs, and others..

I think Linux is getting more better and better.
Microsoft wants to stop the growth of Linux but he does not we will wait and see what happens.
Everyone uses freeware only and not a costlier one.
