A day at the Hospital

Yesterday I had three hospital appointments, First I went for blood tests. Then I had to go to my fibromyalgia doctor. I am going to lose my disability in November because the government claims that since it is only temporary disability it has to stop. They give one year and the year will be up at that time. The government doctor also wants to see medication for fibro or he will not accept it. This was the reason to go and see the fibro doctor, So when I got there I first wanted to know about an exray I had on my back, because I can hardly walk, and I got no results. He looked at it and said, it's okay, then he says you have osteoarthritis, but older people get it, well dah, this is information I need for the disability claim. then I tell him about the disability and how they are asking for meds for the fibro, I have to argue with him for 10 minutes. I he says he doesn't prescribe medicine and I shouldn't be wanting medicine just because of wanting disability, he is crazy or what, have you ever felt that doctors just don't have an idea of what the little people like us live like? we don't have the money they do. That disability is going to be the factor on whether I stay in this house or have to move because I am so broke I cannot afford it, plus I don't even know where I am going to find cheaper than what I am paying now. So after 10 minutes of fighting with him he marks down 2 types of medication and tells me to give it to my family doctor to tell him to prescribe it for me. what a jerk? Then I had to go for an exray on my finger in another building, I get that it is 11:30 and the receptionist says to me you have to come back at 1:00 I said excuse me but when I called you said you were a walking clinic and open from 8 - 4. She says yes but we have lunch you know, So I said well you should have said that on the phone, I am here now and I am not leaving. So she calls the technician to see if she could take me and she did, but gosh what kind of service is this? have you ever a doctor that simply doesn't listen to you like the fibro doctor?

Sounds as though you have one that is not a jerk but worse. It is a shame that people have to struggle because of doctors like him. I guess that is what some doctors do they are on the others side instead of yours. Well, I do hope that all will go well for you and that you are able to get your disability back. It is crazy to have to fight so hard for it when others get it so easy and without problems and they aren't half as disabled as they let on, but the ones who need it have to fight tooth and nail for it. Strange world we live in. I wish you lots of luck Carol..

I know how it is to live from dollar to dollar. It seems they have the money to throw around for everything else imaginable but when it comes to helping care for others who need it they basically turn the cheek or help as little as they can get away with. Disability checks here in Kentucky are $645.00 I wish you were making that much you wouldn't have so many worries about stuff and that it was a rest of your life check. Why do they have to make it so hard..

you would think I was fighting for a million dollars a month or something it is only 122 dollars more and I badly need it if I lose it I will lose my apartment because I cannot afford to keep up with all the bills.

I'm guessing the "fibro doctor" is a rheumatologist? If so, they are like that quite often. The one I saw years ago actually caused my disability to be denied the first time. I fired him and found a doctor who really TREATS the illness. I eventually won permanent disability. Don't let SSDI try and fool you into believing this is a temporary illness, because it isn't. And it is an illness that gets people approved for permanent disability - as it should be. I know my primary doctor now (who is great but is frustrated because he doesn't know what else to do for me) is referring me to a rheumatologist next month. I am NOT thrilled. First off this doc is in a city over an hour away that I don't know well. Secondly, there isn't much more that can be done than what is being done now. But, rather than piss my great doctor off I'll probably make the expensive trip and waste time and money in the process. You need to find a new doctor ASAP. One who actually believes in fibro AND treats it.

fibro is not recognised as a disability in canada, that is the problem, my doctor said he would get around the system by asking for temporary but now the government is refusing to give me anymore temporary disability

I've been pretty lucky, but my roomie's diebeties doctor is a jerk. She's not going back to him. She's not going back to her GP either - she's a jerk too.

I've been really lucky with my doctors - but my roomie didn't like his staff and quit with him - I don't pay attention to staff - I'll joke with them and stuff. I'm not there to see the staff, its the doctor that matters.

It's truly sad and scary to be faced with medical problems and having to jump through hoops the way you've had to do. I've had doctors who didn't listen to me, so I left them. I'm in sympathy with you but don't have any good advice.

I'm grateful that I didn't have to fight for disability. I was prepared to deal with a lot of hassle as I had heard from others that they had been denied repeatedly. Maybe it's because I had a long psychiatric history and the records were verified by the doctors -- "Yeah, she's a depressed nut!"

Bless your heart. I feel for you. My general practioner - who I spoke with when I first chose her as my doctor (from a short list that my insurance approved) - said that she would be happy to be my doc and to help me with whatever forms I needed for my disability. Then, when my case was finally coming before a judge, she refused to fill out the paper work. I had been going to her for 3 years! I ended up having to have my chiropractor will out the evaluation, and ended up being denied..because the judge I saw didn't like that the chiropractor had filled out the forms instead of my doc. No, I don't think any of them have any idea what it's like to walk in our shoes...

Well...it was an excellent group of doctors. If I had to see a specialist, the computer intranet they shared had them right there. Same with the hospital. But...even though we have insurance, we still have a 20% bill we have to pay...and when we got behind the doctor group FIRED US. So, right now, I don't even have a doctor. Not sure what I'm going to do next.

Sorry your having all this trouble. I hate to visit the doctor, as sit waiting for long periods of time even when I schedule an appointment. What good is scheduling when I get to sit for an hour or more waiting to be seen.....................

I don't mind the waiting as I get the appointments fast enough, but don't not tell me your closed for lunch and when I get down there after just having two other appointments that I have to leave and come back, yeah right!

Hi winterose, I'm very sorry to hear about all of this. You definitely deserve to receive permanent disability, after all you've been through. I've had family and friends suggesting to me, that I apply for disability. I have some serious problems with my feet and legs, along with other health issues. As I think you may know, I live in Ontario. Anyway, I once mentioned disability to my former doctor, and he flipped out on me, pretty much telling me I didn't deserve it. He then actually told me something like, "I work my tail off..." What does that have to do with my disability? I now have a new female doctor, but we don't connect well. She has a 'one track mind' when it comes to me, and doesn't really listen. I'm positive if I were to bring up my getting disability, she'd just turn a deaf ear, and wouldn't be willing to help me pursue it. So discouraging for all of us, and especially those of us who can barely make ends meet, and can hardly get by. You're certainly right about 'some people' having no idea how others live. Take care.

maybe you should try another doctor, this fibro doctor I don't have to go to again, and my family doctor does listen to me, so I am happy about that. It is so hard to get disability

Thanks. I wish I could get 'yet' another family doctor, as I just don't connect with this lady. However, I'm pretty sure the provincial government would frown on me changing doctors so often. It's hard enough here in Ontario, to even get a new family doctor. I've heard so many places, how hard it is to get disability, so don't hold out much hope for myself. I really do trust all will work out for you.

There are way too many doctors like that now days. They are too busy and way over booked to sit and talk to you and to listen to you. That is horrible about your disability and I sure hope that you can keep it going. I don't understand if they now say you also have osteoarthritis then why haven't they reported that to disability for you? What two meds did the doctor say for the fibromyalgia? My daughter is on Lyrica for hers and it seems to be working a little better for her now but it is so expensive when she has to buy it herself and she has to take several at a time, her family doctor is real good about giving her samples of the medicine so she don't have to pay for it too often. I really and truly hope that they can put you on permanent disability. You don't need all this stress on top of your illnesses.

they doctors don't report to the disability not the specialists it has to be the family doctor, but my family doctor doesn't even know about it because I only found out yesterday cause the fibromyalgia doctor didn't think it was important enough to tell me when he got the results from the exray. he marked down flexeril, or elavil, so I have to go take that to my doctor when I make my appointment to see him and tell him all that has been happening, I can't yet, because I still have one more appointment to go to and that is to my diabetes doctor on September 2. I also have to make an appointment with the gastro specialist because I have irritated bowel syndrome but by the time I get my appointment it will be too late to tell the doctor about it for the disability claim

Hi Winterose, Oh what a day you had yesterday, I don't like hospitals at the best of times but 3 appointments in one day! I suppose it gets thenm all over with in one hit eh! Can you explain what fibromyalgiais for me though, it is something I have not heard of. The fibro doctor needs a reality check and a lesson in people skills. This would have really annoyed me. I am very rarely ill so if I go to the doctor I expect to be listened to but on the most recent occasion I went to see two doctors and the first one told me I had an allergy, what, I was in pain, I had chicken pox type spots, I felt awful and she said allergy, the second doctor the following day as I felt a lot worse said I was depressed, yes I am feeling down because I feel so ill but I am not depressed, I want to know what is wrong with me so I can really understand your frustration here. I hope it all now gets dorted so you can reclaim again come Novemeber. Ellie :D

fibromyalgia is chronic pain, all over the body, it prevents me from walking and I can hardly stand up with the pain. The pain does not show up in blood tests or on exrays, so for the longest time doctors would not recognize it yet millions of people suffer from it.

I don't go to doctors and pray that I never have to ever in my life.. My husband does although and he has the greatest doctors in the world, they treat him like he is in a 5 star hotel.. He has the best nurses also, they are so kind to him.. He has always been treated very well.. I do wish you the best of luck getting your disability straightened out, no one should have to live with that type of fear and worry about having a roof over their heads.. I am proud that you did and said what you did in the walk in clinic, good for you.. Give em hell old girl, don't let them get the best of you..

I have been very fortunate not to need very much doctor care, and it has usually been good. My first husband happened to get a rapid diagnosis and excellent care for his AlS disease. I usually find myself in the position of having to hold my Doctor back from extreme tests and extra meds. Except in this one instance. I have some kind of neuropathy in my leg, and that is basically all he said. People get them. Well it is changing and is getting a sharp stabbing pain, but I am not going to ask about it again. I cannot afford to see a doctor, let alone have tests, or go on meds. I hope your family Doctor can get this sorted out.

I understand the frustration you faced. If I ever get such a doctor or encountered such service as a patient, I would be writing to the hospital and forum instead of here in mylot :P I feel it is fair that such incidents be made public so that the doctor or hospital concern can buck up and at the same time, keep consumers updated of their choices.

Oh dear I hope you resolve your problems. It is bad enoughhaving severe health problems without woorying about losing your home. I have doctors who treat one symptom at a time and don't look at me overall. However a recent problem I ave had is seeing a different doctor each time I go and them all having differing ideas of treatment. It is so confusing!

So far the doctors we have met are very professional, listens to our concerns and gives sound advices. I hope all will be well with you in the days ahead. May you get what you desire. Stay positive
