hi,it must be Rebecca Addington who broke the 800-meter freestyle mark of Janet Evans, who swam 8:16.22 in 1989-the year Addington was born.
She is absolutely great.

I admit that Phelps is a great swimmer and what's amazing is that he's only 23yrs old.. Right now he is considered as the greatest Olympian of all times because he has got 14 gold medals in just 2 Olympics ^_^
Swimming is quite common and popular in singapore too, and in the past, we have Joselin Yeo, but right now, we have, Tao Li, who broke the asian records and also the 4th fastest during the qualifying stages.. hehe

I love to watch swimming. I myself swam competitively for several years, but never at that level. Germany, my home country, used to have great swimmers in the past. But they really haven't been that great in the last decade or so. I was happy to see that Steffen got herself a gold or two. Last I heard they are getting back to their old system of spotting and grooming potentially great athletes (not the East German one, which was forced participation, lol, although they want to implement some of their good elements as well, but the West German one).
I don't think we'll see Phelps at the next Olympics. He wants to cut back. Who knows, it may be temporary. At 27 he would be one of the older swimmers but with his potential he still may be great.
As to the Chinese. Traditionally it is indeed not their forte, but they had some good swimmers this time around. For swimming height is definitely a benefit, but the Chinese have started to catch up in that department. I mean think about how tall Phelps is. He wears shoe size 14. He essentially has flippers as feet, lol;) And with the determination and strict training program traditionally done by the Chinese, when a gold medal is pursued, I'm sure we'll soon see more good Chinese swimmers. I give them this, they surely have determination.

I am proud to come from the country Phelp's comes from, America, he has brought some amazing gold medals to us. In a little over an hour, at 10:58 am Beijing time, and 10:58 pm my time, Phelps will go for his last gold medal in a relay, I hope he wins!!! And yes, he is the greatest swimmer in the world now, he has met Mark Spitz's record, and he will try to pass it tonight, to take the title for himself as the best Olympian in one Olympics, though he has already gotten the title of Best Olympian, from having the most career golds. I'm so excited to watch tonight, I have not missed any of his swims, it will be sad once he is done swimming in these games, because he keeps me watching them! Don't forget to watch him tonight! I am sure he will make more history!

I remember quite well when Spitz won his golds, my sister was swimming competitively at the time, but not in Olympic status.
I do think Phelps is doing a good job of reexciting people in competitive swimming, and that is a good thing.
Honestly, tho, I'm not really into the games this year - probably not helped by the fact that my TV isn't working at the momennt. Even if it was, I would probably be watching something else - unless it was the horses - and I haven't heard anything about the equistrian games this year.

Hi sophialin.
Yes, I love watching the Olympics, and especially Michael Phelps. I especially enjoy the swim events at the Olympics, including all the swimming and diving. Michael Phelps, as you probably know by now, did win that 8th Gold medal last night, eastern time in the U.S. He's a wonder, isn't he?

I think that he is just amazing to even get as far as he has and he has all right to be proud. He has done the hard work to get him to were he is now.
I like watching most of the Olympics. I wish I would be able to do what they are doing. I love to watch the swimmers, and the divers also. Also the gymnastics of both genders.
