I 'm terrified of Dentists, who among the health providers are you afraid of?

I'm terrified whenever I have to visit my dentist because of bad teeth. I don't have pleasant experiences with them. I'm unlucky to have encountered these problems; one time, my tooth broke during an extraction and they have to perform a minor surgery. At one time, the root canal wasn't appropriately done and I had to undergo the same procedure again. So every time I sit on that dentist's chair, I'm trembling all over. At the moment I have a toothache but I endure the pain and take in pain relievers instead because I'm so terrified of visiting one. Am I alone or are there many people who feel the same way like I do? Who are the health care providers that you are afraid of?

Hmmm I am most afraid of our local veterinarian doctor. I called about getting my dogs spayed and he thought I wanted to get myself sterilized!

Count me in Jen. I'm afraid of going to the dentist and it took a lot from my parents to convince me to go there when I was a kid until I got to my teens. I was so curious what's going on with my teeth when I start to hear the grinding sound of the device that spurts water (sorry, dunno what it's called ) and when sharp object are inserted into my mouth. I get really scared and I was laying still on the dentist's chair. The dentists often times ask me to breath freely. Especially for extraction. When I was a young, I wanted to extract my milk teeth myself and I would not want a dentist to do it. It took me a long time to not be afraid of 'em. I visit the dentist twice a year though for prophylaxis.

Me too im scared to go to the dentist. But when needed I have to force myself to visit the dentist. I usually close my eyes when the dentist start to do her thing to my teeth, I can always hear her say relax, relax, its becuase of my tongue that curls and it covers my teeth and its so hard for her to do filling. I usually end up having too much water in my face. Tears are dripping from my eyes. and the water from the dentst device spills out to my face too. I end up washing my face. I'm also afraid of needle. When the dentist inject it to my gums, I really feel the pain and nervouses inside me. The dentist will just tell it its just an ant. I hate staying at the hospital too. When the doctor starts injecting medicine to my skin. I'm scared, I don't like to see blood. Thats why I always close my eyes when I see them. But I tried to open my ears all the time to know what the doctor, nurse or dentist are doing. I just don't want to see them doing it.

You are not alone my friend. I am not a big fan of dentists or doctors. The only way I can combat the fear is to get good referrals from friends who have used doctors and dentists they trust. Since I trust their judgment, I follow their advice and so far I have not had any major problems. My advice to you would be to find a good dentist through a trusted friend you can rely on, but get your teeth taken care of soon.

I'm not really 'afraid' of any of them, although anxiety inducing might be the correct term. I don't like to flirt with trouble, and I don't like to ask for it either. I go visit my dentist twice a year and my regular doctor once a year, but aside from that, I don't go unless I get sick and it's something that I know requires antibiotics. I never do what some people do, which is to go visit like every health professional out there every year, like an eye doctor and an audiologist (ears) AND a general doctor, AND an OB/GYN, and a chiropractor, neurologist, podiatrist, etc etc etc. I don't see the point. I take care of myself, try to eat decently, exercise and go to the gym, take precautions like not inhale household cleaners, fall off sidewalks, use my seatbelt every time, use a bluetooth instead of holding my cell phone, things like that. I also will get second opinions or just wait if something is recommended and I do not agree, or it's something I consider too expensive. I'm not sure what to say about the toothache, I have NEVER had a toothache but I have had some things that needed fixing. I almost think it would be good to have an idea there was something wrong ahead of time instead of finding out there was after I thought everything was fine. I don't tend to have any tooth pain, the only complaint I have is if I get a cold sore or something. Get some orajel or something to help in the meantime, but I would suggest going to the dentist before it gets worse. The chances are it will be cheaper and easier to fix it than if you wait. Try calling around to find a gentle dentistry office who deals with nervous patients. If you find one that uses lasers rather than drills, you won't even need anesthesia because you won't feel it. Sometimes they can prescribe a valium or something for you to take before the appt to help calm you as well. Good luck.

I have always been afraid of dentists, have always had bad experiences with them. I fell when I was 11 and when I landed, I het the top two teeth and broke them in an upside-down v shape. I had caps put on them, then when I had my kids, my teeth started getting bad and breaking off. I finally had to have them pulled and got dentures.

I'm also afraid of visiting the dentist just like you. But then I still make it a point to visit them every half a year so that I wouldn't to suffer like hell during the next visit to them. They just gave me an impression that they gonna to take revenge on us if we got a set of bad teeth which gave them lot of trouble and effort especially when they a bad day

Hey, we have the same fear :) When I was a kid I don't remember the time we visited the dentist. My mother pulled out my teeth when it is so ready. She uses a string, tied it around the teeth and pulled it off! But I understand the importance of visiting a dentist. Now that I am an adult, I do try my best to convince myself to get some cleaning or fillings. Honestly, I am still scared :)

I'm 45 and still scared of the dentist. I don't know why? I've had a few pulled out but nothing too major. Yet the moment the dentist sticks anything in my mouth I gag. It dosen't matter how much I try to relax, try to keep my mind off it, I gag and and nearly bite off the dentist's fingers. Then he gets more nervous than me. The big problem is I've had a toothache for a few days now and know that I need to make an appointment. If there's a lesson to be learnt it is to look after your teeth when your young or you'll regret it when you get older.

You are not alone, Jen. I have crooked teeth. When I was in my teens, my dad offered to have them straightened. But the technology then must have been so lousy that it took a long time for me to see much improvement in my teeth. They are still crooked by the way. What the dentist tried to do was to extract one tooth, creating space for the rest to shift into a straight line. The shifting process took so long and I was in pain all the time. I get ulcers often and the retainer was so uncomfortable in my mouth. I even had nightmares about my teeth. Even at this age, I sometimes get those nightmares. Can you imagine? Halfway, I gave up straightening my teeth. Not enough with that experience, I went to a lady dentist, thought they would be more gentle. Nope she was so hard on me. I just wanted to get my teeth checked and polished, she tugged and poked until I bled terribly. So painful as well. Then I stopped going to the dentist for a few years. That's terrible. When I got pregnant, I got gingivitis. After I gave birth, my sister recommended a dentist to me. She said that this one is really gentle. So I decided to try. Expensive but the technology has improved tremendously. The equipment she used was impressive. My appointments with her only lasted 30 minutes flat but everything is done. She is fast and gentle. But she told me another scary thing - I may need to take out my wisdom teeth because it is starting to decay. I have two of them. One slanted, both biting into my cheek. I'm postponing that one as long as I can. Still scared! I think you need to get your tooth check, dear. I know you're terrified, but it's for the best.

Hi there! Well like you I'm also afraid of the dentist. I have a dentist uncle and when I was young my mom often brings me to the clinic and have my teeth extracted. As far as I can remember I think I go to my dentist uncle every month. Everytime my uncle would try to pull a tooth I cry and scream so loud that the neighboring offices hears my scream. Sometimes patients waiting laugh at me and I hate that. I would even try to kick my uncle and so his wife and daughter who is now a dentist too together with my mom would have a hard time controlling me while laughing. I remember they use to tie my feet and hands hehe. Those days were really horrible experiences for me. But I thank them for having patience on me during those times cause now I have good set of teeth. I take good care of my teeth so that I won't be coming back to my uncle anymore. I visit him though but not because of my teeth. Ciao!
