Why must people trash a home before they leave it once it's been sold?

I am back on myLot (part-time for now) after buying a house and moving. I would probably have been back sooner, but the people that owned this house before we bought it were just ridiculous. When we previously viewed the house, we knew that it needed some work, but it had huge potential! Imagine the dismay when the closing was done and walking in the house for the first time again. Windows were broken, screens gone and/or torn, an entire kitchen drawer missing, etc... We've been in this house for a little over a month now, plus the two weeks prior to actually moving in, trying to piece this house back together. All I can do is keep asking myself "Why?"!. What is it in a person that leads someone to do something like this? Have any of you ever done something like this or known someone who did? Have you experienced a situation like this yourself and believe you know why it happened in your case? Any insight would be appreciated! Every day, the amazement overwhelms me and I would like to be able to move away from it.
