Do You Like Working For A Temporary Service?

The company I work for, is bringing in temps everyday, knowing they have no intentions of hiring these people on, when a position comes open they just bring in a temp, they are not letting anyone move up to that position. When one temp leave or quit they just bring in another. I really don't see any sense in this. They lie to them and tell them that they will hire them in 90 days, then 90 days stretches into 90 more days. Then all of a sudden, they let all of them go. I know they are getting paid for their services, but they are doing the same work as we the (permanent employees) but they are getting paid less. I understand you do what you have to do to make a living, but if I see where I am not going to get hired on full time, I would be looking for employment elsewhere.

Without knowing details of the company it is difficult to give and opinion of this practice. However although the temps may be paid less than permanent staff it does cost the company more as they have pay agency fees and there must be some training costs involved. I follows that they must think this way or working is profitable to them and unless there is some law against such practices which I have never heard of or there is a change in the economic climate I suspect that they will go on doing it and either you put up with it or leave

I am a full time employee, I wasn't putting down temporary working, I for one know you do what you have to do to survive.

I have never worked for a temp service before, nor have I ever gone to one looking for a job. My sister however, has an appointment tomorrow morning at a temp agency here in Central Florida. She just moved down here from Michigan almost a month and a half ago and she is still on the job hunt. She has great qualifications (head secretary at a school for almost 15 years) where she pretty much did anything and everything so I can't believe she hasn't gotten scooped up yet! She is a little leary about going through a temp agency just because there's so much up in the air and the number one fact that the job IS just temporary, with a slight possibility it might become permanent. I am keeping my fingers crossed though that they will be able to hook her up with at least something, the poor girl is going crazy being unemployed this long. I do think it is a little unfair to be paying them less than what they should be getting if they were a permanent employee. They should have every opportunity to get that rate then anybody else but I guess it comes with the territory. My Mom found her job that she has had for almost 30 years, she started out working there through a temp place and they kept her on. So it is possible!

Tell her name it and claim it. Go in with a positive attitude. Let her work speak for itself.

HI Chevee, I don't appreciate that type of status, I want to have future in my work like when I will start a probationary, I want to have a regular status after working more years and exerting my effort to give the best of what I can give!

I do not work for a temp service but know a few people who do. I don't know what I would do in that situation you have described above but I do know that employers will lead you on, use you for all your good for and then dispose of you like last week's trash. I perfer to work as an independent contractor. My heart goes out to those who suffer through.

The temps always get the short end of the stick, they usually do what the permanent don't want to do.

The last permanent full time job I had before I resigned and moved away I got through a temp service. I had been trying unsuccessfully to get my foot in the door there by sending an application and a resume and getting nowhere, so I went in to a temp service, took their tests for clerical placement and explained my dilemma. I asked if they received any requests from that particular company, if they could give me a chance to work there, even if it was only temporary. I got a call from the temp service and this is what they told me - they had set up two interviews and if the first supervisor didn't hire me, the second one would lol. I got hired through the temp service by the first supervisor immediately, basically when I met her she handed me the hiring paperwork to fill out and wanted me to start on Monday. She also told me she wanted to hire me permanent right away but because I came to them through the temp service and not on my own, I had to stay on the temp payroll for 90 days. I *think* she must've realized I had submitted two applications and resumes to their company in the last two months, and since they received my name through the temp service, she realized how serious I was about a career there. I worked there for almost 5 years before I resigned because I moved. I didn't mind being paid by the temp service initially except that I realized the company was paying at least $5 more an hour for my services than they would have to pay without it. I also was not eligible for benefits like medical and dental and 401K until I transferred over to the company's payroll. I think they paid the temp service like $18 an hour and I was only making about $12.50 through them. By the time I resigned, I was making close to that though. I've also used temp services in order to work a one day job, or a few days for extra money. They serve their purpose.

I understand your point, the temp service served their purpose, but it is up to the company to hire you. The company I work for is not serving their purpose. Don't get me wrong I am not putting down the temp service nor, the company I work, for it just the way things are turning out.

Some people actually love the option of temp work because it allows them more flexibility with their personal schedules. You can get out faster as a temp than a regular employee. They also often like the change in duties that comes with each new temp position. And there are of course the ones you describe, who hope to get a permanent job at a company they work for as a temp. Sometimes that does indeed pen out. But often it doesn't. It's still better than unemployment as a temp still keeps up a work history and may even pick up new skills here and there. That is valuable in the permanent job search. Most temps keep their job search going, just in case a temp job doesn't translate into a permanent one. But they of course will not tell about it at their temp job, if they think they may have a chance there.

Never thought of it that way. I was really thinking about the benefits, medical insurance etc. I guess it's fine if you have a spouse, and you are on their medical.

A lot of companies use temp services so they don't have to pay insurance. They hire them on long enough and when it comes time for the insurance to kick in they let them go. They wait awhile; go back to the temp service, and hire again.

i did this for a while and i didnt mind it because the places that you get sent to are fairly new and exciting. it was nice because you got a change of scenery, people and different tasks, although one job i had for a week was totally crazy (i was sure glad when the week was over!!)

It is all depends upon industry where you seek employment. For manual working force they prefer temperory services. There bargaining capacity will be on hire side when there is a switch over. This trend has now spread in all industries, it appears now. The employers might have suffered by this trend and it may be one of the reasons to recuit for teperoy service. But this trend will affect both employer and employee. Mostly an employee will prefer for settled life. Many youngsters who have high hope about their talents, prefer to switch over rather than stick on to a perment job for a decade or more.

When I worked as a temp, I got paid more than the regular employess, and in fact, I was offered a job, I often turned it down. My hubby worked for a while as a contract employee too (computers), and he took a big cut in pay when he was hired. The benefits were better, but you can't eat benefits. :-)

Yes, the company is being sleazy if it is holding out promises of hiring people on as permanent. I have worked as a temp, but I knew upfront that it was a temp position; there was never any promise of anything more permanent. I think that I rather prefer working for myself. At least, then, I know where I stand.

That does sound rather unfair, but some people like change so it doesn't bother them if they only have a short term contract, and it's good for students who might just want to work in their holidays. I used to work for an agency where I would go and work in different dental practices when their regular nurse was sick or on holiday etc, i loved it, it never got boring and I got to meet loads of new and interesting people!! Plus it pays well! hehe always a cheeky bonus! xxx

Once upon a time I worked for a Temp service but mainly to get ahead on Christmas shopping. I worked graveyard screwing bottle tops on shampoo. I was soooooo very tired and I survived for a few days but if I don't have to then i'd never do it again... I know alot of people who work for them and they too expect to be hired on FT and hear the promises... I suggest everyone look elsewhere because a Temp job is what it is... TEMPORARY. Alot of the work is very grueling... bottom of the line stuff it seems.

Working for a temp service allows you to set the hours you want and to work a few weeks instead of long term. If you need several weeks of time off you can do this with a temp agency, where a regular job wouldn't allow it. The only downside is what you said - some jobs will tell you that they may hire you permanently and then keep giving you empty promises. That can be very frustrating. The only bright side to this scenario is that you will probably realize that you wouldn't want to work for them anyway if they are not true to their word.

Because its not easy to find a good job this time, considering the competitions, most people resolved in accepting temporary or contractual jobs. For me its okay at least for a particular period of time, we are earning. Though its still good to really find a job that would also give us assurance for a continous income.

Many temps, may have a hard time finding a full time permanent job, so temping is most suitable for them, until they can find something permanent. Companies like to hire temps, because they save money in many ways. They do not have to pay medical, vacation time etc. The temp agency is probably getting more than the job is paid, but when they take out their profits, the temp is then earning less. Temp work benefits the company, the agency and the employee, if they are satified with the arrangement. I am currently looking for employment, I was laid off two months ago, I started my job search with a temp agency, because I know that is the easiest way to get employed until I find something full time. When you are looking for work, agencies are the most abundant source there is, there are not many companies doing direct hiring, they turn it over to an agency, and then if they see that you are a fit, they will hire you.
