Today I walk arounf the corner of my place to a little shop that sells pet supplies checking out dog coats for the little dog I am looking after, a lady comes in with a little but very fat pug dog she found sitting in the middle of a busy road...the lady in the shop couldn't do much as she couldn't leave the shop so remembering a friend of mine a while ago who found a dog, he put a lead on the dog and let the dog lead him to his home so I offered to do that so the lady in the shop lent me a lead so off I go and the dog heads north, but the lead came off and he kept running up the hill so I followed in the rain i might add, he goes running into a house and straight around to the back, I rang the bell, no one home, I could see the owners had built a type of barricade from the rubbish bins so I put the dog there assuming it was his home and left a note and put it under the door...I went back to the little shop to see if she had heard anything...well it wasn't the dogs home but as the lady rang the pet shop to tell her the dogs owners came into the shop....a happy ending to this doggy story....so my question is what do you do if you find a dog, ignore it, take the dog in and try to find the owner or ring the pound....

Good on you Lilaclady I am glad that the Dog went back to the Owner
I have taken a dog in before and we found the owner a few Days later as we had put notices up in the Shop Windows near by, if we could not have found the owner I would have phoned up the Kennels to let them know if anybody reported the Dog missing
I am so glad though that the Dog is back home

Well he didn't exactly lead me to the right house but it all turned out ok, I know the pound is probably the way most would go but i always think about what happens if the owners don't come for him....thank you for your response...

Hi lilac,
wow...I admire you for doing that...I never encounter any situation like this but if ever I will, I will not ignore for sure but I will also be scared walking with the dog as it might lead me to a place which is not safety...ANyway, that depends also of the environment!
but, I will take the dog and wait until someone will be looking for her!

I too couldn't just leave the dog on the street and I have helped out 2 lost dogs myself get home by calling the pound and then the ranger came out and they used scanner to see for a micro chip and found the owner who then came and picked up the dog so ended happily but I'm afraid if I had of found this very fat pug he wouldn't have found his way home, he would have found his way to my house, who would notice just one more pug at home

I had a dog hanging around in my yard once. She had tags but no address on her collar or anything. I called my local pound and asked if anyone had reported a missing dog and sure enough her owners did. So the pound connected the owners to us and then they came to pick her up. It felt real good reuniting them, I was so worried that she get hit by a car or something.

We try to find the animals owners. If no one comes forward ten we try to find it a good home. Our main problem is with kittens though. They keep dumping them in our housing division cause it is kind of secluded. We have taken in two but found homes for 3 others.

I did once found a dog and then two kittens. We have a NGO that works with animals called friendicos and if you ring them up they come and collect the pets and keep them till they can find a suitable hoem for them. SO both times I rang them up and they took the animals away. I would have loved to keep hem but I couldn't as I am short of time and I didn't want the additional responsibilty. Ifeel they are like babies and had to be looked after properly, if you can not devote time and attention you should not even have them.

most of the time we found wild animals, no identification whatsoever so we just let them be. I usually just go out for grocery and mailing parcels, in my backyard usually just wild animals and we feed them sometimes. I am so glad though what you did to the lost dog, it must have been a great day for the dog too to find his owner

I would ring the pound as they have shelter and food for the dog...and that is usually the first place people look or call to see if they have retrieved the pet once it has gotten away. They will also call you back if you leave your number so that it's not put down and they make an effort to find a home for it need be.

My current dog was a stray. If they have a chip in their neck you can get them scanned at the pound to see if they have an owner. Rather, let me try that again: you can scan their necks to see if they have a chip. Then you can find their owner.
I always help strays. I love animals and always have.
Well...mammals anyway.
Reptiles...not so much.

That was nice he didn't have the right house but still managed to get home safe. I have not had that happen before. There are dogs in the neighborhood but they seem to know where they live and they go home. I guess here in the country you don't find dogs like that and if you do. I think that most of the time people either keep them or try to find out where they came from.

wow that's very nice of you. I would do the same too, in case we still can't find the owner for the day i might keep the dog for a few days... until the owner shows up... off course we will be putting up posters and flyers for the owner to know where to look for his/her dog. =)

I will be lucky if I'll lost my dog and you'll be the one who will find it. =)
Of course, I'll return it to the owner.

OH what a lovely story, you are a very kind person to do that. Even if the dog did not actually live there, I wonder what the people thought when they came home and found a pug in their garden!
I am a soft touch, if I found a dog or indeed any pet then it would be coming home with me until I could find its home or if not, then I know for a fact I would end up keeping it. In my life I have had a dog and five cats, all of them were strays off the streets or unwanted pets. There is no way I could send it to the pound, no way.

Hi lilaclady,
Simliar story happened to me and my friend, we went to the shops one day and when we came out there was this great German Sheperd dog out side and has we were walking home he followed us we tried to shoo him away but keep on following us, we just ignore him and carried on home, when we got to my house he was still with us as if he was our dog. He then came into my kitchen and my cats just ran to the bed room and hid, the big lump just st there won't move ans I had to cross over him to get him some cat food to eat, he ate the food and st at the door steps when my called the RSPCA. Ten minutes later my husband came home from work and the dog won't let him in he he it was though he was guarding us from him, then the RSPCA arrieved with the van and looded at the dog, the knew the owner so it was great they told us the dog is alwasy doing that sort of things and he is such a softey a lovely dog, so it ended that the owner with children had got their dog back.
