Dog dies due 20 minute ticket ordeal...

Good Morning America reported on a story of a young couple being stopped by police while rushing their choking dog to the vet. The officer took 20 minutes to write the ticket- while the dog died in the vehicle. The officer also had the nerve to scream at the young man "It's just a dog! You can get another one!" What does my mylot family think of this approach the officer took to this situation. First of all- I would have never even STOPPED! He would have had to give me the ticket at the vet and call it a day- If a policeman would have said those cruel words to me- I would have ended up in jail that evening. My dog is part of my family- how dare someone day you can just replace them that easily. The officer showed absolutely no compassion! http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=5598075

And the policeman's supervisors "didn't think that he was guilty of misconduct", and only "agreed that he handled the situation poorly"!!!!???? That I don't understand! I guess that means the policeman gets away with it, just like that, end of story?

Policemen get away with most everything- I mean come one- they ARE they law. I am appalled at the fact that the situation was caught on video and they still feel as though it was a situation dealt with "poorly". I mean come on, you could plainly see on the tape that the young man was distraught over his dying pet. This officer could have definitley had MORE compassion for the situation. You should never judge how a person feels about their animals- whether it be a dog or whatever!

I think the way this police officer acted is disgusting. If it had been a child in the back would he have spent 20 minutes writing the ticket? If it was a child in the back would he have told it's parents they could just have another one. I know some might not agree but to dog and cat owners, these animals ARE FAMILY. They are alive and life is important and should be protected and nurtured whenever possible. Perhaps they should not have been speeding, but given the situation a responsible police officer and HUMAN BEING would have at least escorted them to the veterinary surgery and dealt with the legal implications once the dog had reached the vet.

I do not have children and my dog is my daughter. I personally would have kept on driving and just had to deal with the consequenses when my dog was safely at the vet. I can totally understand this couples frustration when they were pulled over and the distress the driver was under. I could not even imagine how I would have reacted to being told such a thing as "it's just a dog". My heart goes out to these people and I will always remember then when necessary one must disobey the law in order to save a life- whether it be human or not!

I saw a piece about this one the news the other night and was appalled at the arrogance and insensitivity of the police officer. Like you, if it were my dog whose life was in danger, I wouldn't have stopped. If the couple were violating traffic laws, the police officer could have taken down the license plate and the ticket could have been mailed to the couple. There was no reason whatsoever for this to happen and that officer, I hope, will be disciplined for his insubordination.

I can't comprehend how this officer was just repremanded for poor conduct in this situation. I mean come on- there was a life at stake! Does it matter if it is human?

That is utterly disgusting and I hope the police department gets sued. My dog is also a part of my family and if a police officer said that to me I would went all off and probably ended up in jail myself.

That's absolutely disgusting, those poor people. I personally would not have stopped either, whether I'd get in a lot more trouble or not. I also think it's ridiculous that his superiors don't seem to be taking it seriously at all.

Police officers are supposed to be more than ticket writers. They are supposed to be helpful and compassionate which this one was nether. He should have led the way to the vet and as others have said given the man his ticket since he thought it was so necessary. I find that the police officer's supervisors found him not guilty of misconduct just as bad. Something should have been done to him even if it was to send him to a humanity management class.

To me the supervisor is JUST as guilty as the officer. How could he not see this situation more seriously?

That just really tears me up inside. I know that if I was in that same situation, I would be too worried about my dog. This is just so sad to hear. It's pretty harsh but I would probably store up a lot of hatred against that officer. I also know that speeding could put other people's lives in danger. But I would never forgive myself if I didn't give my all to save someone who is like a little brother to me, my dog.

At this point I feel sorry for the officer- I mean he obviously has never know the love of a loyal pet such as a dog.

That was a very cold hearted officer. Anyone who has pets they are not just animals but part of the family. I am like you the officer would have had to give me the ticket at the vet's place. Than I would just explain to the court because if he insisted on giving me the ticket after we reached the vet's I would fight it. And since most people today have pets there is a good chance that I would end up with a judge that has a pet. I would explain to the judge what happened and then I would just have to live with her decision. I also would report the officer to his higher up. There is never any reason to treat a person badly and the reason the young man was speeding to begin with so he could get the dog to the vet.

In my "perfect world" the officer would be helpful enough to provide a police escort. But in our world it is obviously much different. I don't plan on breaking any laws- but in this situation, I would become a criminal.

This policeman sounds disgusting. Frankly, I wouldn't have waited even for the Prime Minister if my dog was sick and I was taking her to the vet. This is crazy! How did these couple wait for twenty minutes! They should have said to hell with that guy and taken off. Can't he be sued? Cheers and happy mylotting

I hope this family does sue. If anyone has a right to do so- I believe they do. They lost a beloved part of the family due to the ignorance of an officer of the law! He should be charged with animal neglect!

I think this is one of the worst stories I have ever heard! When I had my dog he was part of the family.....the officer should be suspended! If not fired! He doesn't have the right to sit and decide what someone else feels about their pet! I wouldn't have stopped either! He could have chased me to the vet and caught up with me while the vet was saving my dog!

"He doesn't have the right to sit and decide what someone else feels about their pet" EXACTLY my point!! How can someone else tell you how you feel about a beloved part of the family.

I hope they sue the police department. I do agree that the dog's owner should NOT have been driving 100 mph to get his dog to the vet, but it's obvious that the police officer took 20 minutes to write up the citation out of spite. And that's disgusting. He sounds like a nasty, nasty man, and there's no 'just relax' when your dog is hurt and MUST be at the vet ASAP -- that makes me ill.

I totally agree that there is NO relax when it comes to a pet in distress. I could only imagine the horrible life this officer lives to be so cruel about a dying pet!

it's obvious that the officer do not know what is compassion and doesn't understand the relationship between a dog & its owner. My doggies are like my daughters. I would be really mad if someone says i can easily replace them. How could someone utter such irresponsible remarks? The officer should have escorted them to the vet and only issue the ticket to him there. That's the true hero!

This situation makes me loose even more respect for our law inforcement officers! I already live in a part of town that is basically deglected by them- now this! I am appalled and disgusted that the police department isn't doing more about this!

That was not a professional way to act. He should have taken their license and let them go on to the vet. He could have taken care of things and let them pick up the ticket later, or better yet, escorted them to the vet. I can't believe people are getting to be so uncaring.

This world have definitley become cruel in my day and age. When I was a kid the cops on the corners would bend down and shake your hand and ask you questions like "what do you want to be?" Now a days your lucky to catch a cop smiling let alone saying hello! Are we to be so surprised that a police officer could act in this manner? It really makes me wonder!

That is absolutely disgusting, that man is a disgrace to his badge. I cannot belive his words, does he not understand that the dog is not just some object that the family own like a tv or something but an actual life, and he caused that poor dog to suffer horribly and eventually die. What a horrible, mean, nasty pathetic excuse of a man. Well i hope one day he is choking on his doughnut, and everyone nearby just watches him choke and doesn't help. If my dog/cat were choking i would not have stopped, or if i did i would have exlained to him and if he insisted on writing a ticket instead of following to the vets i would have driven off.

Obviously this officer thought of the dog as a monetery item to the couple. He thought nothing of the feelings and emotions that go into raising and caring for a dog. Dogs are the most loyal animals- no matter what. How could someone cruely let an aniaml die- don't we fine and lock people up for that any othet time!!!!!!!!!!! Why is this officer exempt of those charges?

I guess I would be in jail too cause I wouldn't have stopped till we got to the vet either. I know that pets aren't people and I understand that sometimes when times get rough they end up getting the short end. Now with that being said, I still love my pets as if they were people and try my damnest to treat them as such. I don't have a dog right now, mostly because we just haven't found one we really want to bring home. I lost my dog about 5 yrs ago and my husband just lost his last year. So to just up and get a new one is hard for both of us because there were emotional bonds that were there. I think I would have tried to chock that cop had he said something like that to me. Hell you'd still be hearing about it on the news. Cause I would have lost my damn mind. For some people their pets are their kids, because they raised them and treat them as such, so to tell someone so what you can get a new one is beyond crule. He needs to be punished and made to appologize to those people.

What?? I would have gone to jail that day too. I can't believe how some people act, especially cops. This is so sickening to hear crap like this. This just proves that some people just don't appreciate all life. Our dogs are members of the family too. That officer had no compassion. And I believe in karma so I just hope that he's on the lookout.

That was a lack of compassion. There are so many people out there who have a different view on animals. The ones who have them as pets do think of them as part of the family. I used to have dogs and now I have a cat. No matter what kind of animal, it was always a part of the family. Sometimes it is harder for others to see where the other one is coming from especially if they never had what the other has had. If this officer never had a pet it would be hard for him to understand how a human could put an animal at the top of the family list. I do feel sorry for people like that who not only show no remorse or compassion, but can not put themselves in people's shoes.

What an IDIOT ! Well - now that that's out of my system - I wouldn't have stopped either - regardless of the potential repercussions...However - perhaps the couple thought the cop could or would help in some way - how very, very sad... I do hope they consider animal cruelty charges, they certainly are warranted...

I didn't think of it that way- that maybe the police would help in some way. How much more devestating does that really make the situation! Now that I think about it, it is so true, aren't the police supposed to protect and serve? Aren't they SUPPOSED to help in distressed situations?
