the explaining thing is easy..
but, the arguement is toxic!..
and i have great difficulty when i do tell my father and friends who are also health care providers..

Why do people think that reprimanding smokers is telling them something they don't already know ~ and why, after bringing it up once, must they continue ? Life, good, bad or indifferent is made up of choices ~ we all get to choose... You don't like smoke ~ stay away from those who do ~ it's not up to you to push a change they're not ready to make for themselves.

Mind your business. These people have chosen to take up and continue to smoke and already know that it is toxic.
Just stay away form those that do smoke and save your own lungs. (Every man/woman for themselves!)

I don't understand why you feel the need to reprimand anyone about their personal habits. Everyone knows the dangers of smoking, especially if they're healthcare providers, so constantly imforming them that they're killing themselves probably only annoys them and doesn't achieve anything. I have a friend who smokes and I'll mention a new treatment to help with quitting, but I only offer that once in awhile and never push it.
Nagging doesn't work, and a person will only quit if they want to and make the choice on their own.
