why are we afraid of death? why do we sacrifice something to live longer?

I think that most people are afraid because they are not sure what will happen. On the other hand, there are many people who , through their faith, do know what will happen. I also think that the thought of leaving everything and everyone that we know and love is a very scary thing, regardless of faith.
