How time flys.I got a message that my friend has born a baby the other day.She want me to share her happiness by a special way:to come up a nice name for her baby.I thouht it would not be a difficult thing so I promised her.How native I was.It is really a hard work. There are thousands of characters in China , I have to find three of them and arrange them in a certain way.(In China,it is common that one have three or two chinese characters in one's name.)The name need to sounds nice and have a special meaning.I suck big time in the work and when I finally got four candidates,I fall into another trouble:I like all of them and it is hard for me to choose one of them to be the final choice.Oh,I have missed my parent. How did them find the name for me!
Do you have a kid?How much time did you spend in finding the name for he/her.Does your kid like his/her name?(I have a friend didn't like his name and he change his name when he graduate from senior high school.)

I had my daughter's name picked out years before she became a reality! LOL. I had read a book called Caitlin (it was actually a series of books) when I was in jr. high and i loved the main character so I named my daughter Caitlin Marie. I pretended like my exhusband had a say in the matter by choosing a couple other names but the truth is she was always going to be Caitlin. She however does not like her name. Makes me sad.

I am currently pregnant. We are having a boy. We made a list of names. My hubby just wanted one with an Irish background. Then we ran it past the family members. Took us about two weeks. I don't think it took us that long with my daughter.

I hope that you pick a lovely name for your friend's baby. It is challenging for you to choose a name that your friend will like and will suit her baby. Good luck.
My first son is called Ryan Alexander Zebedee. His dad and I found Ryan was the only boys name that we both liked. He had names like Fox, Raven and Rex in mind. My family said that we had to call our baby a normal sort of name.
My second son is called Leo Andrew Rodney. His dad suggested the name Teo so I asked him if he liked the name Leo. He did so we called our baby that. He wanted his father's name so I agreed to the name Rodney and Andrew was my choice of name.
My name is Maxine and I think it is alright. I get called Max from some people and Maxi from a couple of people.

Hi,maximax8.I think you are good at choosing a good name for your children.I like both of the two names of your sons.I have seen many of your posts and know that you have traveled to many countrys.I think you must have many good friends and know a lot of people. There must have some good names of the people you know.So you have more choice than other people and can always come up good name.
Thank you for sharing.

Ha, ha! With child #2, we did not have a name for her until it was almost time to leave the hospital! We had to have a name for her, because the hospital needed to fill out the birth certificate.
Choosing a name is a matter of great consequence. The child will hear this name throughout his or her life -- unless it is changed or a nickname is applied. The child will sign papers with this name. The child will introduce himself or herself with this name. It is all very important.
Ideas for names:
1. Ancestors. In addition to naming the child "Junior" or "The Second", there is also a habit of using names from the child's family - an aunt or uncle, a grandfather or grandmother, great-grandparents, etc. Sometimes the ancestor may simply have an attractive name. Sometimes the ancestor may have a memorable history. Sometimes the ancestor is still living and is honored that their name is chosen for the child.
2. Hopes, wishes, and aspirations - What are your highest hopes for the child? Perhaps there is a way to make a name constructing your best wishes for the child's life into the name. ("Live long and prosper"?) Here again, maybe there are significant or important people in your history, in the history of your local area, that you would lend their name to this child in the hopes that this child would find the courage to accomplish similar things?
As I said, it took us a while to decide the child's name. We borrowed from a relative, who found honor in our choice.

Hi,highlyclever. There are some culture difference between China and USA.In China, our names often make up of three or two characters. The first character is our family name and the other character can choose by ourself.
In ancient times, most of the chinese families have a book to register all the family member's name.Every generation's second character is the same and they must have a difference between their third characters. But different generation's second character is different.Although the times has changed, the custome is no longer abide in a strict way,but we can not have the same name with our ancestors.
And we can rarely find a person who has the same name with the important or signficant people in our history.Maybe in our culture,it is just for respect, because we think they are the only person who can not instead by other people. That is the difference that we all want to respect the important person but we use different way.But I have a classmate whose name is same with a famous poet,we all like his name.Maybe all thoes custom above will change in future.
Have a nice day.

Well I'mand boy's name glad we didn't have to go through a complicated system like in China. Actually I had a favourite girl's name, and luckily our first child was a girl. Our second was a choice of two, so that was relatively easy also. Thank you for an interesting post.
