DISSOLVED METAL REDUCTION

it's a most fascinated area both in organic chemistry and in inorganic chemistry.All the so-called books provide the same plausible mechanism involving SET theory, the Single Electron Transfer theory, but unfortunately, they never show us any specific reason why same metal with different solvents converts the same substrate to different products. What's your review?
