Yes I do leaave a tip in most case's. But when I don't get coffee or I get igored as they think the person I'm with is paying. LOL. no tip for you. Or I leave 50 cents. I bet next time they remember who pay's the bill. If I'm low on funds I try to get them next time. Or I don't go out to eat. The cook should get part of it anyway. My girlfriend is a waittess and she makes a good 100.00 to 150 a night. on tips. So yeah sometimes they make more then you. I son't think anything really when other people don't tip as maybe they can't afford to. A tip was ment for good service and if you could afford it. Now someplace's they put right in to the bill. I don't go there.

It depends on what kind of service you get! Most of the time I will always tip, but I will always give cash and give the money to the waiter or waitress otherwise the restaurant or business will get it and the poor waiter/waitress will not see a penny of it and they work so hard too and they are not paid much, plus they are on their feet all day which is hard work! It is not very often I get poor service. When you pay by card never put a tip onto the card because you don't know if the waiter will get it and it will go straight into the owner's pocket! So cash is best if you tip and I do agree with tipping providing you get good service!

I do give tips if the service provided was good. Tips are given from within the heart for some really good sevice provided and if one feels that there is no need to give one there is nothing wrong about it for the person is already being paid for the service by his employer. I feel it is perfectly normal for a person to simply pay the bill and not leave anything as tip.

They are barely paid by the restaurant. They make less than minumum wage from the restaurant. The restaurant depends on the customers to pay the servers most of their salary, plus they have to pay taxes on the bill based on tips they should have gotten. So if they are not tipped they actually lose money, plus they have to give 10% of their tips to the bus boy at the end of the night. They only make about $3.00 an hour from the restaurant, so if someone does not tip them let's say on a $20 bill they still have pay 10% tax on that 20.00 bill. Now they are only making $2.90 per hour. Plus the bus boy will make less money as well.

hi limcyjain...well you are right...with the case here in our place, we actually do receive same salary...wage here in our country is very low, so at least it's a fair thing that we do all work and get paid, well we cant afford much to give tip...thus the food and service we get are worth more than they give...and thus tip i bet is inclusive of what we pay...
well i guess in some place it is their practice since wages are different from the waiters/waitresses...
thanks for the post! have a nice day!

hi ladym...i think they are more lucky than we are...$3.00 per hour is very high compared to us, here in our country, people do have profession just get paid from $5.00-$10.00 for 9 hours...so i bet the tip depends on what country you are in...unlike here in our place, most job are on the minimum wage of our country whether what profession we are in...we really start getting paid on minimum wage..thus eating in restaurant is our right and giving tip is not a practice. it's not good to comment as if we know everything, it is at least taking consideration on the situation of the place...we might give tip if our income is high enough...but sad to say, we have the same wage with the waiters/waitresses...and thus, some restaurants here in our place are inclusive of the tax and the tip i bet...and thus prices are too high of what they give as the service and as well as the food...i hope somehow, this gives you the understanding why some other places don't practice giving tips...
hope i didn't offend you! i might as well share to you why we don't practice giving tips! although we understand that in other places giving tip is a standard, so we might as well follow if we get to the where they give tip...
have a nice day! God bless!

I don't give tip but my mom does. Because she is the one with the job right now, haha.. But if I have a job, I will give a small amount of tip. I don't have anything against people who don't give tip in restos. I guess it's acceptable in these days if someone will not give some tip because of the world/financial crisis.

well here in our place, i guess it's not really a practice to leave a tip...thus the price are too high for the food and service they give to us...so we usually dont give tip...and also here in our place, we assume that tip are inclusive of what we pay, since prices are really unworthy of what we receive...
thanks for the post!
have a nice day for both of you!

I always leave a tip for the waiter or waitress unless they really stunk at their job. If they were mediocre then I leave about 10% of the pre-tax amount. If they are pretty good then I leave 15% and if they are wonderful, remember everything I order, keep the drinks filled, and are friendly, etc. I give them 20%.
I am not rich, but if I am going to spend money to go out to eat then I will be sure to have enough to leave a tip for the waiter/waitress.
I had a girlfriend in high school who was very rude and never left a tip, no matter what. It was embarrassing. So when our group was ready to leave we would all put in a little bit more to bring the tip up to what it should have been.
Her thoughts were that they made a salary so why should she give them more money. Did you know that waiters/waitresses usually only make about $2.13 an hour? That is WAY below minimum wage.
Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

here in our place waiters/waitresses got paid with $5.20...that's the minimum wage i guess...and food sometimes are not worth it with the price...but i may give a tip also if the service is beyond my expectation...i think if they did an good service, then they also deserve a tip...
thanks for sharing! have a nice day!

I always tip unless the service was just H O R R I B L E. I think that is part of going out to eat, if you can't afford to leave a tip then you can't afford to go out to eat. You shouldn't cheat the waitress out of her money, especially if she did a good job.

Serving people in restaurants don't even make minimum wages and they depend on tips. I always leave a tip. I am on a fixed income and if I'm going out to eat I figure the tip before I go. I would not tip as much for poor service though I would leave some kind of tip. Most times they work very hard.

maybe on some places they dont have minimum wages..i think here in our place they were paid minimum of what we have thus it is also same with othe job...wages here in our place do meet the minimum wage only...and thus the prices in a restaurant are too high for what we get, with the service and the food being serve...well if i may get a higher income, maybe i would leave a tip...thus i see to it also that if the service i get is more than what i expect, then i may leave a tip...

I used to be a waitress and I made $2.50 an HOUR! Waiters and waitresses make their money on tips. If you don't have money to tip when you go out, don't go out. You should always account for tip.

i may say you have a great pay..you see im an accountant and i wast just getting paid by $10.00 for 9 hours here in our country...if i will be a waitress there at your place then i may get at least $22.50 for 9 hours...
if you say people here in our place would not go out and eat because we dont have enough to give them as a tip, then there will no be restaurants here in our place anymore...you see, it's not a practice here in our place to give tip, since are wages are low, we do all get paid whether what profession we are...well the waiters/waitresses here in our country do get paid, same for us...i hope you understand that we dont have the same situation...but how i wish your salary was also same with us...
if we got to your place, and your practice is to give tip, then we might as well follow also...
anyway, thanks for the post!

It all depends on the service itself. But most times I will tip. I have had excellent service and I will give a little more than a usually do. When the service is mediocore then I will give a little less. But if the service is so lousy and unworthy I will not give a tip at all as they did not work for it. However I will give it straight to the waiter/waitress as most times it will go straight to the restraunt and some restraunts have a tip jar that all of them have to share. I don't think this is fair as some of them will work their butts off and then there are others who don't even care. So hence why I will give it straight to the waiter/waitress.

well i guess they put a jar for a tip to share it with the staff also in the kitchen...i may say, they should only give to those who perform and give the best service...i agree with you that giving tip for those who have excellent service...
thanks for the great sharing!

To be honest and I mean this with respect it is very rude. I also kind of think it is rude to be laughing about ripping people off. I don't mean to be rude, but you did ask. If you can't afford to tip you should not be eating at the restaurant. Go to a fast food restaurant where the people working there are paid more adequetly and do not count on tips to survive.
You should be aware that waitress's base salaries are very low and pretty much only pay for their taxes. You should also know that they have to a set amount of taxes based on their customers checks. So on that check that you pay where you did not tip her she will still have to pay taxes on that money that she did not get from you, therefore not only did you not tip her but you cost her money as well.
Not only did you make her work for free for you, and cost her money but you also took up a table where someone else who would tip her might of sat. So you have wasted her time and cost her money. Waitresses are mostly employed by the customers they are serving. How would you like to not get paid by your boss after you have done the work, you would not like it very much would you.
If you are not rich enough to tip, you are not rich enough to eat at restaurants where people depend on tips to live. You are hurting those people financially and wasting their time. Now tell me do you think this is nice?

I always try to leave at least two dollars. I know waiters and waitresses don't get paid much and that its a hard job. No offense but it bothers me when people don't leave a type because most of a waitresses income is off of tips.

Yeah, i respect your opinion...Yet I didn't know that they are not geting paid much, I thought that waiter's/waitresses has a high pay...So at least now I know that I should share some to them in behalf of the service they give...
thanks for the post! have a nice day!

Tip is an extra spending on eating!!!
I trust tip is a motivation tool for the restaurants people....
I have a policy on giving TIP.
When i go to restaurants,
if they collect tax, i wont give tips. here i may depend on the quality service.
and if its a normal petty restaurants where they wont collect tax, i used to tip them.

Well, I always do. It is just customary here. So standard is 7%. Service is bad, 5%. IF the server is a cute girl, or it is good service, 10% haha. What can I say. Cute girls are my downfall!

I usually give tips when I eat at restaurants (provided that they accept tips). One reason why I do it is because they treated me okay and another reason would be is to help the crew out. I know a lot of them are underpaid so it's just a small way to help them out. Probably the reason why I won't leave a tip is if the customer service and the food was exceptionally bad. I really don't have anything against people who don't leave tips. I mean, is their (your) choice. Besides, it's not a mandatory thing... A lot of restaurants also have service charge already so there really is no need to leave money anymore...

yeah you right...if its good service why not, but if you think the price is high enough compared to the food being serve, or the food is quite not good, then that's the other reason why not leave a tip...

I tip unless the service is truly awful. In the US wait-persons are paid less than minimum wage, because it's assumed that they make up the difference in tips. I've worked as a waitress myself in the past, it's hard work and you have to be nice even if your customer is a jerk. If the server is truly horrible at his/her job, I'll either leave a very low tip or none at all. I figure that server needs to learn to do their job better or find a different one & my low tip will help them come to that conclusion faster. But as long as they provide a fair level of service, I tip as well as I can. If they provide outstanding service, I try to tip them more.

I usually tip 10-20%, sometimes 25% - depending on the service. Often, I will tip to round the payment off to an even dollar amount.
It may have been the case in the past that servers were not paid as much by their employers in the anticipation that customers would give tips for good service - and so I enjoy telling a server that their service was good by giving them a good tip.
Generosity - it's one of those things that goes around and comes around.

i don't give tip when there are service charge and if the service is not good. i do consider that. their service will only reflect how good restaurant that is. i think of people who dont give tips is maybe he/she not satified to the server/waiter/waitress.

Mixed thoughts on this. Some restaurants have a cover charge, never really none what that is for, so I never tip there, unless the service is exceptional. Then you have the restaurant (no cover charge) up to you then, if its good, tip, if its not don't.Then you have a take-a-way, now they get nothing, and I think that's most unfair, nine times out of ten, the server's there are better then the servers in some restaurants. So for me, if the service is good I will tip around 10% of the bill, however, and I have done this in the past, if the service is really bad, and the food the same, I'll stand my ground, and pay nothing, not a penny.

I am against giving tips to the people. By doing so u are making the person to expect some tips from everyone, due to which his attitude towards the person not giving tips will be much worse. Also it is the first step towards giving bribe to persons. Hope u agree

i respect your opinio dear...but i'm don't totally agree to it, partially maybe...it maybe unfair to people who are working to restaurants to speak to them in general..so maybe i would say some of them have that attitude, but for others who receive tip and don't actually espect it, is just a bonus to them that maybe they deserve it also for the good service they provide...but for me i don't give for the reason that i dont have much money or maybe i will if i get rich...LL...
