How did you decide what you wanted to be when you "grew up"?

I am a sophomore, technically, in college. I received my Associate in Arts degree this past May from a junior college. Currently, I am working in a job I've been at for the past 2 years. It's a 9-5 office job that has helped me get through school, taught me new and useful skills and really helped me mature. I'm going to school to be a teacher -- I don't know that that's what I want to do, though. What I want is to work with kids... but counseling, DCFS, social work and all that is too much for me. I'm very emotional and came from a troubled home so I wouldn't be able to sit back and have to follow the rules when I saw children who were hurting....
ANYWAY -- (Sorry, I tend to ramble) -- I'm in school to be a teacher. I'm about to quit my job to nanny (which just barely covers my bills and is a major pay cut from the office work I do now) just because I want to be around kids. But I still don't know what it is I WANT to do in life. Perhaps this is why it's taken me almost 5 years to get my Associates!
How did you know what you wanted to do? Have you always known? Did it come to you one day while you were doing something? Are you stuck doing something you don't like because you never figured it out?
Please offer any stories, advice or suggestions you have. Thanks! -MK-

Teaching is really, really hard, so if you're not sure, you just might not want to do it.
I started out as a journalist, and I felt more than a little odd about asking those probing questions that make a good story, but tear up the person being asked. If people don't want others in their business, that should be OK. A friend and I made a silly bet which neither of us can remember, but I lost. The penalty was that I had to pick up a subbing license and teach for two weeks. Within the first couple of days, I knew this is what I want to do forever, and I'm in my forty-first year!
Can you try subbing to see if you like it? In Florida, you can sub with an Associate's as long as you're signed up to go for a bachelor's.
I don't think I'd have done what I've loved all these years if I hadn't lost that bet.

Subbing is something I hadn't thought of... thanks for the advice! It's something I'll look into and consider. And thanks for sharing your story! It made me smile. :)

Thanks for the "best". Today was the first day for the kids to come to school, and my classes are wonderful! I'm so very glad I lost that bet! If only we could earn enough to stop juggling bills!

i honestly have always admired people who knew what they wanted from almost day one and had the drive and determination to do it. as for me, i have worked a plethora of jobs and still dont know what i want to do (i am 46 :-) but the thing with me is, i get bored of stuff so easily. right now, i am working from home (on sick leave from an office job that i prolly wont go back to) i am scrapbooking for someone, card making and starting a support group (also starting ahome biz!) so i am enjoying myself at the moment. best of luck!

I hear ya! I've also been amazed at those who seem to be born knowing what they want to do! Thanks and best of luck to you as well!
