Oh I had it done a few times as a child. I kind of think sometimes it was my mother's favorite pass time, LOL. Now I have my own kids, I wouldn't even think of it. But, different times and different strategies.

It was me. I never had to with my eldest but one day when my younger daughter came in she said the F word and she was only about 6 and I said that if I ever heard her say that word again as it was an adult word I would put soap in her mouth. Well she did as kids do so I did, she called my bluff and said she liked it so I put mustard on her tongue instead. She doesn't swear. Recently my son came home from nursery with a few choice words as kids do so I told him if continued saying those words as they were adult words and wronf I would put soap on his tongue, he continued, he got a finger full of fairy liquid. He doesn't say naughty words now either LOL. I know it sounds harsh but at the same time my two eldest 21, 17 have never bought trouble to my door, have respect (not fear) as I have never hit, naughty steps works,a tap on the hand when little if danger or a wallop on the bum but nappy cushioned. Of course, I was such a perfect child that I never needed such reprimands. Nevertheless, I was always glad my mother bought Ivory because it didn't taste as nasty as other brands. I didn't curse -- still almost never do -- but I got the washing if I said no when I was told to do something. I wouldn't be surprised, even though I haven't seen a single blood relative in almost 30 years, if an occasional bubble escaped!

I never had. I think my husband may have done it to one of the kids or at least threatened. Just threatened probably. I'd remember if he'd actually done it. I think. But I myself got spankings, sent to bed without supper and stood in the corner. No soapings...

Hi Mands, If I was grounded I used to go into my brothers room climb out of the window, onto the fence, the shed and then off out down the alley so it never worked, but that was the rebel in me then. Other than a tap on the hand or a tap on the bottom, nappy on I never smacked my kids either but they have anddo still get soap if they swear, naughty steps works. Ellie :D

Lol - and I know who it was! I must admit I was a little surprised as I would never have thought she was capable but I have to say it probably works! lol I used to lick the soap when I was younger - I really was a disgusting child nor have I done it to anyone although my daughter seemed to inherit the same strange taste for all things soapy! Luckily she too seems to have outgrown it now! Hugs xxx

My mom ran a bar of Ivory soap down my tongue once when I was a kid for being sassy. It was disgusting and I vowed never to do it to my own kids and I haven't!
My sister uses vinegar on her son, not a lot; she just dips the tip of her finger in it and sticks it in his mouth. She did this to get him to stop spitting. It worked too. He doesn't spit in the house anymore.

Well, he is three. He would spit when he got mad about something. He didn't really spit outside to begin with. Well, unless he got mad. But she broke him of spitting out of anger so now he doesn't spit anywhere; inside or out.

Hi Rosekitty, Goodie is worried now that you have been perving darling or how else would you have known LOL.
I am the baddie here by the way and have held my hands up in surrender but my kids don't swear, I have never washed their mouths out literally but have put liquid soap or mustard on their tongues.

Hi p1kefish,
Oh yes I have done it, many years ago I was down at my friend house, well I was always at my friend's house and she has two children, they were a about 8 and 11 the girl was 8 and the boy was 11, I used to always baby sti for my friend and the kids treats me like a scond mum, anyway Mark the son was in one of horrible ways and would cheek back to his moter and one we were sitting in the kitchen when my friend told him off about something he then turned around a told to using the four leeter word, I got up and dragged him to the kitchen sink and put some fairy liquid in his mouth, you shouild seen him it wasen't even much. Later he said sorry to his mum and me. Now they are both married and Mark is father himself, he still calls me second mum. It thought him a lesson though he has never sworn at his mother ever since.

As a young child my mum would threaten to do this to my brother & I but she never went through with it. I feel very sorry for those that it did happen to, however im sure it works.

Well, in my family they used soap, lard, or hot peppers. Nothing that a kid wants to have in their mouths at a young age. Not that I would want that now..well except for the hot peppers.

Well, I am not to partial to lard/shortening unless it is frying or making something. But I do love roasted potatoes with alot of butter..salt pepper and a little garlic powder..then baked until they are golden brown..yum! I sometimes will boil them in beef stock first then bake taste so good to have a little beefy flavor also. As you can see My mind isn't that far from food either..

I've never heard of such things in my life. As you can see, I'm from India and here this kind of punishment (or whatever it is) is not in vogue. In fact, in my society, nobody has even heard of it. So if it is really a bad form of punishment (which I suppose is) then I'm really a lucky person, not having got done with me ever. Similar, mating this kind of punishment to my children is simply out of question.

Thanks for clarification, now I'm feeling relaxed. But anyway, I feel it's a strange thing to do to a child.

Yes...it is a VERY strange thing and can have bad repercussions. A childhood friend of mine was getting out of control with the language he used in front of his mother. Some kind of punishment was in order; his mom got a fistful of Fels Naptha soap powder.(I don't know if it's still on the market) and jammed it in his mouth. He spit it out quickly and slurped up some water from the garden hose. 15 minutes later blisters started forming on his lips, tongue, the roof of his mouth, and he said his throat burned. He had to be taken to the hospital, where they pumped charcoal and some kind of stuff to relieve the burning. The cops got involved and it became a real mess. Nobody knew, including my friend's mom, that naptha is corrosive and is a main ingredient in napalm. I'd just play it safe and make him eat cold brussel sprouta, or something else unpleasant.

I tried and it backfired! My son is very defiant at times, and he's not even 4 yet! He likes to spit AT people, and that is beyond nasty and disrespectful. I tried slapping him for it, and he didn't give a rat's behind. So after talking to his doc (wanted to make sure it wouldn't hurt him-he has food allergies), I bought some "safe," nasty tasting dish soap. He spit at me, I grabbed his face and gave him a big squirt. He smiled and asked for more! He did the same with bar soap.
Ignoring actually works with him, but it takes a LOOOOOOOONG time to break the behavior.

Oh, everyone will probably think that I am the most horrible parent ever now, I have done it to one of my kids before now.
It was to my eldest who is now 16, I was on my own with him until he was 8 and he was quite a little ratbag at times. Well he started to swear a lot, and I tried to stop him with other methods and he still continued. Anyway one day he said it and jokingly I said "if you say that again I am going to wash your mouth out with soap because I am not having a dirty mouth in my house" his reply was "you would not dare" wrong words to use on me really. So I said "ok say it again and see what happens" He did and so he blew bubbles for a couple of hours.

Hi Gemini, I don't think you are a horrible parent at all and it was me that inspired this discussion as I mentioned that I had done it in my soapy gravy discussion which gave P1key the idea, I can't believe so many people here are considering it as some sort of child abuse. I never had to with my eldest but did with both my younger ones and like you it was you wouldn't dare that done it and my daughter said she liked it and swore again so I put mustard on her tongue instaed. Tough love, I don't beat them, I use naughty step and grounding or loss of certain privileges but in some situations you really do need to do something more. Ellie :D

LOL dominant hmmm one of my many quietly hidden talents!
Thanx ellie, that is very sweet of you to say that, I was rather strict with my son back then. But then I felt I had to be with being on my own, plus my parents upbringing of me must have rubbed off. It was quite funny though because I put a little bit on him and when he spoke after he blew a huge bubble and he thought it was hilarious and wanted me to do it again! I said no of course!

I have threatened to do this - but didn't. One of my daughters has never eaten a piece of fruit, and says she remembers me stuffing applesauce into her mouth when she was a toddler and trying to make her eat it! I don't remember doing that, but according to her, I've scarred her for life. She's 25, and has still never eaten fruit - so maybe she's right. Or maybe it was the Applesauce Monster. Or maybe I am the Applesauce Monster.

That's absolutely amazing that she has never eaten fruit. I just checked because I wondered what country you could be from. I laughed when I saw you are just down the coast from me! It's even more amazing because fruit is such a staple here in Australia. Does she eat things with fruit in it, or does she avoid everything?

I have never had it done and personally I wouldn't ever do it to my son. There's better ways of discipline than that in my opinion.
I did have a babysitter when I was younger who would wash kids mouths out with soap if they said curse words or the like. I just remember sitting there thinking how mean it was. Later she did turn out to be crazy and hooked on pills...
That's always nice to know after the fact. :D
