What should I do/see in NYC?

So I recently (today) moved out to New York from the west coast for school, and while not in the city, I am close by. I have never been there, and figure I should definitely go. Does anyone have any experience/advice on what I should see, food to eat, nightlife to attend? Thanks!

I really like the UN and just hanging out in Washington Square. Be sure to take in a show as well.

I think the most interesting thing to do in NYC is to go to Ellis Island and see the infromation about all the immigrants that came to the city. You will see the Statue of Liberty too of course. The Empire State Building is cool, but you have to stand in line for a long time to see it. I think the best thing to do is to take a greyline tour of the city, that way you will hit all the highspots.
