Grammar and spelling in manuscripts nowadays are a whole lot easier thanks to computers. Built-in spell check and grammar check is a very brilliant idea. But the problem is, i find myself thinking twice about my spelling when i'm scribbling down notes on the trusty old paper and pen. It got me wondering, what's the impact of spell check on the English subject? is it really a good thing? How do you think this affects us?

It is funny to see how much children has relied on spell checker and other tools to compose. As a teacher of 15 years, I have seen grammar, spelling and even work in general getting so casual or not even done at all! It is almost like they want everything handed to them, even the correct spelling of a word! Parents, please expect more out of your children than you do. Their future depends on it!

How true. I was thinking about that, too. Coz i remember when i was in grade school, spelling was very important to my english teacher, she had punishments for us we we dont get the words correctly. I will never forget the word "cemetery" coz that's the word that had me jogging for 3x a certain week (the punishment was jog around school for every word you got wrong in the spelling exam; exam was monday [you're allowed 5 mistakes], wednesday [3 mistakes], and friday [perfect score]). Hehehehehehe.

Hi, super_jj, Spell check and grammar check are brilliant tools. They are very useful to make sure that not only are the words spelled correctly, but that the grammar useage is corrrect also. But the really important thing to remember is that they are also a learning tool. If you learn from them, then writing with the trusty old paper and pen will be much easier. I have been out of high school for nearly 40 years. My native language is English, and I still need help at times, for I do not remember all of the rules. While spelling is important as it gives the impression that you have learned something (I give a lot of leniency here to the habit of shortening the spellings of some words or the phonetic spellings used in texting on cell phones and some chat rooms). But I find that grammar is much more important. Grammar helps get your meaning of the message across. I work in a hospital laboratory where we use e-mail to communicate problems with our instruments, reagents, controls, etc. Some of my co-workers have terrible grammar and I usually have to read their messages 2 to 3 times in order to figure out what they are trying to say. As an example: "The panda bear eats shoots and leaves" is much different than "The panda bear eats, shoots and leaves". Two very different meanings!

Heheheheheh. How true. I'm a copy editor in a publishing firm and i do encounter a lot of incorrect grammar. It sometimes frustrates me when i could not decipher what some of our authors are trying to write about. Hehehehehehe. But it's ok. It's my job to figure it out.

i actually rely on spellcheck, it is helpful but i don't always leave up my work to spellchecks, that is bound for errors too. i always see to it that i read my work or email over and over again.

yes but, when off line doing say crosswords my ability to spell hasn't decreased. i may be because even with spell check you need to know how to spell the wrong word can be plugged into your document from a drop down lit or the drop down doesn't understand the word because it is way too misspelled.

I think spellcheck is great. You could be typing something and make a mistake, it's nice for it to be caught before you actually post. Sometimes I use it when I'm posting something online, but I'm always using it for important stuff. but the spell checker makes you realize that your spelling can be a little off.

i don't know about others but i find myself making more spelling errors now as i do not read through my work because i rely on the computers spell check and if i feel my work is too long or too short I'd just use Microsoft words to edit it... even my grammar is getting poorer and poorer by excessive usage of computer when working... i just made 5 spelling errors in this post. Spell checkers convenient yet not oops 6 spelling errors is this post XD

generally when I write on a piece of paper I do not make too much spelling mistakes but when I am typing on the computer I have a tendency to make a lot of spelling mistakes because I am not very fast on the typing part and that is the reason I make a lot of errors. So most of the time I rely heavily on the spellchecking option given in Microsoft Word. Generally I do not make a lot of grammatical mistakes but he is due to the typing problems I have the spellcheck always on for even my mail.

I love spell check. I am the same way when writing down words with a pen. I am lost without some type of spell checking device.

I fink three are a grate toal, and I dun it Al thy tome, and yes they really do help you to remember how to spell correctly, and for sites like this where you have so many people from different countries, it must be a great help to them, if you spell a word wrong, and don't know, you will keep spelling it wrong, I had a free 15 day trial with Spell Catcher Plus, fantastic application, but to buy, I think was $99.00, not cheap...

I'm 'bad' in Grammar as my last grammar class was 20 years ago. I repeat : 20 years ago. I know that my grammar is bad, but I don't care. For me, I'm very glad if people can understand what I write, and I can understand what people write.. and that what I'm doing now, reading and writing with 'bad' grammar. I take care about spelling, and I think I did well. It's easy because when I make mistake in spelling, there is a red underline, and I will change it. But I still have problem. I always make a simple mistake in the similar words like : though, tough, taught... etc.. For me this tool help me a lot. I learned a lot from my mistakes...
