i used to work with him 8 years back, working together as a team...we became good friends...then after a year he left the company and we were not in touch for long time...just met at some places accidentally....2 years back i got a call from him and he gave me a good offer...he trusted me and had in mind the work i used to do 6 years before and he thought i would have been better...and his first choice was me...today he is my boss...everything is fine but...he don't behave with me like a boss...but for me he is the boss...the problem comes for whenever i need something and i go to talk...he takes it very friendly and doesn't care too much about it...and if i think to leave the company i have to think about him first...he trusted me and gave me the position i was wanting....this was my experience if it can help you to decide in any manner i will be glad.

The ideal scenario is that your friendship status with your Boss is left outside of the workplace. As a new employee the last thing you need to do is get everyone offside. If you are seen to be getting preferential treatment from day one they will not appreciate you at all. Maybe once you have proven yourself to them you can relax a little in this area? But at first, I would definitely try to position yourself as any other employee.
