What shall I buy my wife/husband/mother/father etc

Maybe I'm missing something here buy why, oh why, do people ask this question? If I thought someone that close to me was asking a bunch of strangers for an idea as to what I'd like as a present, I'd be really insulted! Have you so little interest in me that you cannot work out my likes and dislikes? Or can you simply not be bothered to actually think about me. Apologies if I offend people here but, is it really that difficult to choose something original for someone you love by yourself?

I understand what you mean. I remember when we were still dating, my husband took one of our common friends to buy me my birthday gift (i think the friends insisted on it actually). The top and bottom did not match and i still cannot waer the top!
Last time his cousin was with him when he went to buy me a christmas gift (a charm bracelet). Afterwards he told me he was the one to chose coz what his cousin suggested did not appeal to him. I thank God he gave me what he chose coz it's the most beautiful gift ever! I cherish it and so is the 'enegagement' ring he chose for me...
I don't like asking what to buy for others...sounds like you don't care at all...it's like you are giving money to some stranger and asking them to buy what they can get with the money as a gift...
I'd rather have a sheet of paper with the words gift written on it by my husband than a gift he did not choose for me...

HURA! Another best response! Thanx!
Yeah you are probably right! Maybe it's not really their fault (those who ask what to buy). Maybe they are just not confident enough..like some people think buying expensive gift is a must to please the person receiving it..i don't agree...i love gifts that come from the heart :)
