Do your cats steal food?

My cats follow me when I take my dog for a walk, much to the amusement of my neighbors. They say they have never seen a cat following a human being who is taking a dog for a walk. And one of my neighbors asked me, "Don't they steal food?" I was surprised. "Of course not!" I said, and she looked quite surprised to hear that. Now that got me thinking. Do my cats steal? My cat Kitty flicked a piece of boiled meat off the work table right under my Mom's nose once. She got a severe scolding for that. But you can't call that stealing, can you? Anyway, my Mom was right there. I guess we can safely say that Kitty was exercising her rights as the most important member of the family. My other cat Puttu ate all the choice pieces of meat from my plate, which I had left unattended to attend a phone call. Of course, I demanded to know what he meant by that. And he looked at me as if to say, "Well, I really thought it was for me!" So, I wouldn't call that stealing either. Are cats supposed to steal food? Do these sweet creatures have such a bad reputation? So what do you say, cat lovers? Have you caught your cat stealing? Cheers and happy mylotting

My cat (recently departed) used to steal anything she possibly could, but she wasn't very good at it. She used to sit nearby when you were eating chicken (her favourite) and pretend she wasn't interested, but you could tell she was. If you got up for even a moment you had to take the plate with you because she'd be up there. She used to raid bins, jump on benches, and even stole meat while it was cooking on the BBQ. She was very naughty. Once she stole a piece of chicken out of a plate of green curry. She gutsed it down really quickly in case someone saw and stopped her, and realised too late that it was HOT! She sat there pitifully coughing and gagging and then drank a huge bowl of water. After that she was a bit more careful.

Yes, and not only does my cat steal food. She does something else weird. She eats Doritos and Cheez It's. You do have to make them smaller for her, but she loves them. She weird. Oh and my other cat likes dog food. and my dumb dog prefers cat food. I think my critters are a bit confused. LOL

Every plant and animal in the known world sees what it wants and helps itself. Only man has decided to call it 'stealing' and 'wrong'. Talk about taking something very simple and twisting it into something complicated complex and ugly. The human race can sometimes really get on my nerves.

When somebody from the human race takes what rightfully belongs to me, I certainly don't like it. And I would label it 'wrong.' A bunch of thieves once broke into my home and made off with 3 lakhs worth of valuables. My Mom was alone at home and she was terrified. I had to rush all the way from Bangalore to Mangalore to handle things. People certainly don't have the right to help themselves to my things because they want it. However, when my cats "steal" food that I am supposed to eat, it is just cute and amusing. LOL Usually, they think I eat muck. It is only when meat or fish is cooked they sit near me at lunch time or dinner time, and I share bits and pieces with them. However, they don't "steal" as such. They are well fed cats. ;) Cheers and thanks for the response

Well, it is also a natural instinct to protect what you consider to be your own, and there is nothing wrong with that either.

My daughter was videoing herself sitting out on the stoop eating a sandwich with the dog at her feet. She set her plate down to go inside for something and told the dog to leave her food alone. The camera was running while she was gone and the video is hilarious. The dog is sitting there, very stiff from trying so hard to ignore her plate. First he looked right at it, then you could see the extreme act of will it took for him to turn his head deliberately away, but he still couldn't take his attention off it... you could see his eyes swiveling sideways to look at it longingly. Hehehehe.

My cat has little interest in people food. Sometimes if I offer a special invitation he will have alittle milk, salmon or tuna but that's about it. I had one cat who had lived for awhile as a street cat who used to get into the trash. He also used to come running when the refrigerator door opened. Most of my cats have been alittle interested in people food.

a few years back i had the most wonderful cat, Cupid. he never done anything wrong except for a couple times and kept our house clear of any pests. i had a boyfriend back in the day that drank until he passed out on weekends. one night he'd been eating big sausages, forget what they're called, and sharing small bites with Cupid. he passed out on the couch with one big sausage left in the plate on the coffee table, nose high to cupid, that kept eyeing it. walking back and forth sneaking looks to see if i was looking. i pretended to not look, but kept watch out of cornr eye. he politely strolled by one more time pulled it off the plate then ran .

Cupid sounds like a cat after my own heart. And that was a real cute story. It must have made you laugh seeing him run like that. I bet he looked guilty later too. Don't you think cats look funny when they know they have done something wrong? LOL Cheers and thanks for the response

My cat doesn't like most human food (excepting lettuce and Tuna), so he doesn't try to take it. He does however like to smell it and sometimes will meow until you give him some of your food. If you relent and give him some, however, he will ignore it!

Same here. They are very interested in what we eat, but they don't want to eat it, unless it is fish or meat. LOL

My former roommate has sleep apnia and loooong before she was correctly diagnosed she used to go into these little sleeps. Well, we were eating fish sticks and I kept trying to make her wake up and she kept falling asleep. So, when my cat, Sab, pulled one of her fish sticks off the plate, I figured she deserved it, after all, the roomie wasn't paying attention.

Sab deserved everything she ever got - except the bread she used to get into. She was one of those bread eating cats. Had to keep the bread in the fridge because of her.

well my cats certainly don't steal food. at least that's what they think. my girl will open her treats drawer, take out her treats and tear open the package to enjoy it. i don't think she considers that stealing as she does it right in front of us. she just feel that getting her own treats is like us getting a drink from the fridge. my corss-breed boy actually jump up the dining table when we are going to have dinner to take a look at the dishes. if there is something he wants, he'll just sit down and 'demand' to be given his share. so no, i'd say my cats don't steal food. they just take whatever is theirs. cheers ;p

Our cat don't steal food. But our neighbors cat does. One day i forget to close the backdoor in our kitchen. I never notice that our neighbors cat silently entered our house. At that time im going to fry a chicken wings. After i wash the chicken i left it in the strainer. When i return i saw the cat getting one piece of chicken. She run so fast out to our house when she saw me. Well, no one to blame but me because im not carefull.

I don't call it stealing either! As much as we'd like to think our animals know right from wrong they don't live by our rules. Unguarded food is no-ones property to them. I've a cat that not only 'steals' for herself, she feeds the dog! She flicks food on to the floor for her. As my dog is a canine dustbin we have to be very careful not to leave certain foods around. All my animals obey the leave command and have been taught not to beg, but if no-one is there to tell them of course they are going to eat it.

I have 3 cats now and i have never caught them stealing, not food anyway. I give them a taste of what im eating so they will leave me in peace to eat. my whole purpose for laying in bed is to rub Miss Kitty's belly. Thank goodness she has short attention span. Last nite i tried to ignore her and she just kept touching my face with her paw and poking at me till i give her what she deserved, her belly rub. I could have gotten to sleep so much quicker if i just naturally let her come first. So heres how it went. Bubba sleeping beside my pillow, Sissy sleeping beside or on my legs and Miss Kitty under the covers getting her belly rubbed. This belly rub is like everytime i lay on my bed no matter what time of day or nite it is. If i dont cover up she likes to get inside my clothes. My Miss Kitty is quite the something else. She has even figured out how to open my desk drawer and take things out and the desk drawer closed again. I havent figured out how yet. She knows where the catnip is and she scratches the door to let me know when she wants it. I have never seen a cat quite like her before. She is very smart. she was found in a bush with her litter and bottle feed till i got her at a very young age. She even presses her mouth to my lips. Like she is kissing me.

Bubba and Missy Sissy are her kits. Bubba will also reach up for me to pick him up. He gets really nuts running or rather galloping around. Sometimes he plays really ruff so Sissy will not play with him then. He loves troll dolls. For some reason lately he keeps getting into my potatoe bucket and getting potatoes all over the place.

I love cats but i never own one.As i have known they really eat food everytime they see anywhere.Unlike the dogs, if you train them they will obey orders,.Cat maybe can understand also but perhaps it depends how you raise them or how they grow up.

Sitting here laughing ~! Well ~ yeah, I would consider the incidents you mention ~ stealing! Although, I must admit to also considering it amusing! My own cats "steal" from my plate ~ or at least try to if it's something they find suits them... The most amusing "attempted" theft was catching Haley (who was only about 6 wks. old at the time and weighed all of about - ohhh - 3lbs.) try to steal the 22lb. turkey I was thawing out of the kitchen sink..!!! Ohhh SHEEESH what a sight! She was tugging her little heart out and her butt kept sliding forward ~ honestly I was laughing my a** off! Still do when I remember it~ too funny..!

I am reminded of how my cat Puttu tried to steal a packet of meat, about half a kilogram of it. It was too heavy for him, and I am sure he did not mean to steal it as such because I could hear his frustrated meows even outside the house. I guess he was calling me to help him.

Hi positive, My Parents' cat are stealing food..LOL! I call it stealing since they know where their plates are and if we are not putting it there, it is not for them..lol! So, when we are going to leave anything on the table like fish or meat, they will crawl and go there once no one is there...They will run away when they will see anyone of us coming back and my Mother will always told us, it's not their fault since we are the one who were careless! LOL!

My cats dont steal they just take. When you are trying to et something they will come over and put their paws in your food and just start grabbing. The other day my son was eating his lunch and our cat Tiger came over and just sat down on his plate so he couldnt eat his sandwhich. She was rolling all over it so I made Zac another one. While I was making his other sandwhich she was sitting on my counter eating the one that she had rolled all over. I never knew cats even liked table food. So I put all the cats outside when we eat.

LOL ... when I first got my cats, they showed a lot of interest in human food. So, we used to confine them to a room when we were eating. Gradually, they lost interest in the type of food we eat. :) Cheers and happy mylotting

It really is. Our cat can not be trusted when food is left unattended, he would really go for it. Of course he knows that it is not for him because the food is covered in our kitchen table but he will really force himself to uncover the food and eat until he would be full. We give him food regularly but, he really want to eat anything that's left unattended. Sometimes we give out cat a lesson, smack a little here and there when he made mistakes, It works because he is careful the next time he sees food. But we always keep food now to avoid tempting our cat to be stealing.
• India

Mine knows exactly when the smack is coming; I think he can read my mind. The minute I make up my mind to smack him, he flees and hides behind the fridge and peeps out at me. Oh my, he is a little darling!! Cheers and happy mylotting

Yes, my cat Star steel food from his brother Luna all the time! If Luna turns his back for one minute Star will take his dish and eat his food. Then if Luna wants his dish back, it too bad, too late! You would think that he would know better by now. His brother is a thief! He does all the time! Oh, and yes my boys have girls names. I named them before I got them. I liked the names and they fit so Star & Luna it was, even though they are boys! Luna is a thief too! He will steel my food. He loves ice cream. If I turn my back he will help himself to my plate. So I guess they are "cat burgalers"- and hence the name!
