Where was Mama Smurf?

The Smurfs are celebrating their 50th anniversary. That's right, they have been around since 1958. I didn't know that, until I opened up my Avon book and saw a watch with Smurfette on it in celebration.
I watched The Smufrs when I was young. I remember Papa Smurf and Smurfette, along with the other male Smurfs. From what I remember, Smurfette was the only female in the group. I do not remember a Mama Smurf. Where did all these other Smurfs come from if there was only one female Smurf, and she was a child? Does anyone remember them ever talking about Mama Smurf? What happened to her if she did exist?

As far as I know there is no Mama Smurf, nor was there ever any mention of her. They just came about, lol. The only female was Smurfette and she wasn't there from the get go but added later.

I don't think they ever gave an explanation, lol. It's a children's show after all. Kids don't ask those questions;) My guess is magic. In one episode their main nemesis' magic backfired (didn't it always, lol) and the smurfs multiplied.

I remember Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and Clumsy Smurf, but I don't remember Mama Smurf. I can't believe The Smurfs are 50.

I love Smurf story and it is my all time favorite. Funny, I never ask myself about Mama Smurf. I never think about Smurf gender, because I always focus on the story.
Yes, where was Mama Smurf?
