i am very afraid of the dark and i'm not ashamed admitting it although my sister makes fun of me about it. i am already 26 years old and i still cannot sleep with lights off unles someone is embracing me.
when my grandma died when i was about 17 years younger, i couldn't get to sleep until my sister is finished with her school projects. oi often sleep on tyhe table where she reviewed her notes. i hadn't changed since.
and coz of that, i always sleep with lights on somewhere. do you also sleep with lights on?

Hi dare2fail, I’m afraid of dark only while I’m alone in places which I’m not familiar or I first time to be there. I always would sleep with light on in a hotel room, relatives’ or friends’ house. There must at least have some light on inside the room, I then could feel easy and fall asleep, unless someone like my hubby or sister or niece is sleeping beside me.
At home I usually like to sleep with light off. I'm not afraid to sleep in the dark even I'm alone in my bedroom. I feel more comfortable and relaxed to sleep in the dark.
posting and take care.

hi jeiyah..
i see you are still affected with scary movies. and we are very much the same on that case. because i know the effect of watching movies on my sleep the following night, i decline to watch horror movies as much as i can. the last i watched in the cinema was more than a year already and i never have since braved watching even a DVD of any scary films.
happy mylot, too, dear. enjoy your day!

ohhhh I sleep with lights off....I cant sleep with lights on....
When I put off light I think I have closed my eyes .....so dont get afraid of darkness....
You also try this thing when you put off your light just think that you have closed you eyes .....you wont be afraid of the dark than.....
Yes one thing if you sleep with eyes open than it will not help you...because once you close your eyes you would have to face darkness.........
Thanku

hi ganesh.
that was good for you to be able to think of the lights off as eyes closed.
as for me the presence of the light gives me courage to close my eyes.
you see even if i close my eyes if the lights were off, i could feel that sombody is looking at me behind the darkness. that really is my problem.
anyway thank you for responding here. your insight, among with the others had given me possibilities which i can use to finally overcome my fear.
till our next discussions..

No, I don't but I used to. I used to leave the lights on when we sleep because my kids were still sleeping with us in our bedroom, when they were still small they canot sleep without lights. But now, not anymore. We're turning the lights off when we sleep and use instead a night lampshade.

I always sleep with lights switched off. I always want the darkest possible room to sllep otherwise I can not sleep. Whenever I am terrified or frightened then I sleep with the lights on. I think it is not embarassing to sleep with lights on. I think this is more of a habbit and yo should accept it.

hi dropofrain.
given the choice, meaning for me not to being afraid of darkness, i would rather have the lights off. i think that's more normal and healthy way of sleeping.
however, i still have to overcome my fear so sleeping with lights off when i'm alone is still far-fetched. and yes, i have somehow accepted it though i'm still trying to develop the courage.
good day to you pal!

I always have a light on in the house as I live out in the countryside where there are no street lights, and unless there is a bright moon it is pitch black in my house at night. I have 5 dogs and 3 cats, so if I want to get up in the night to go to the bathroom or get a drink, I could trip over an animal and do myself a serious injury. And I am usually so disoriented when I awake that I can never find the lightswitch. So I have a distant light on, like in the hallway on a different floor, but it provides enough for me to see my way around safely.

hi there ritz.
that is a very ideal place where you live. at least for me, coz i laways wanted to live in a place like that since the time i graduated from high scholl and terribly missed the farm where i spent my childhood.
you have plenty of pets with you and i see you also love them much, that dog in your avatar was simply adorable.
i could remember on my gradeschool years, even if we turn the light on our room, at times, the lights were on also on the hallway for the same reason as you have mentioned.
thanks for participating, good day ma'am!

No dear. dont be so scared of dark. i sleep with all the lights in off position. Please have courage and slowly-slowly try to sleep in the dark. In my view one can not have a sound sleep while the lights are on. You should get rid of such habit at the earliest & have sweet dreams and sound sleep

thank you so much shreya. i don't entirely sleep with lights glaring on me, when i'm not alone i'm okay with just the corner lamp. i have long started to try to get over it and at times i thought i can manage it however when my imagination takes over my will, im just helpless.
thank you for sharing. happy posting.

hi there metalhalo.
hello also to your son. it must be so cute to have a little nightlight beside a kid sleeping which his mother prepared for him. i could see how peaceful he can sleep knowing that you were also there for him.
i notice here, that many also of the respondents leave light in the bathroom.
thank you for sharing again. good day to you.
(if you don't mind me sayig, you look beautiful in that picture of yours (",).

Before I was afraid of the dark where I would leave the hall light open. After I fall asleep my mom would close it. Now I close the door and close the lights outside because now im always the later sleeper. My method of going to bed without it having to be pitch black is to shut the computer, but there is still the light. Before it closes completely and is still in the shut down process I would jump onto my bed as fast as I can and pull the covers over my head.

hi damlilass..
i could imagine you doing that pre-sleep habit and i can't help but smile. don't get me wrong, i also get myself a lot of bother just thinking of ways of not to have to do anything in darkness.
just the thought of me getting on the bed in the dark is scarng me. and many times , i also have seek the comfort of my blanket to protect me from the fear.
thank you so much for sharing. take care when jumping up your bed.

LOL.
I actually do sleep with the lights on sometimes. And I'm 30. So don't feel bad.
My hubby works nights, so I'm usually on his sleep schedule, which means I'm normally sleeping in the day. But sometimes I get tired early and end up going to bed before the sun comes up. I usually turn the lights on.
Oddly, not because I'm used to sleeping with the sunlight, but because I'm the only one home. I feel safer if I sleep with the light on in the bedroom than if I don't. I've noticed that if it's his day off and I go to bed earlier, I don't feel the need to turn a light on.

like you, i feel that light is my security at night.
on the other hand, i think it's sweet of you to adjust your own sleeping clock with your hubby.
thank you for sharing.
hope we could share more discussions.

hi weiwei. i think that's very normal. i mean most of the time we outgrown our fears and even some of our beliefs. and interestingly we braved them like we didn't imagine we will. i too have learned to face upfront many of my weaknesses but darkness still gets me humbled.
thank you for sharing.happy lotting.

i used to when i was younger, but now i just like some sort of noise (like the TV, or even the humming of my computer). obviously theres light given off by both of those too. but i dont need like the full blown center lights. i cant sleep when its that bright. and besides, doesnt your body react to you sleeping with the lights on? im pretty sure youre body gives off less melatonin and so its harder for you to fall asleep. do you have problems falling asleep?

hi skenthal. i haven't noticed how my body gives off melatonin, but eversince i got the habit of sleeping with lights on, i never was uncomfortable. it's not necessarily a full-blown daylight upon me but enough to pacify my nerves.
thanks for responding. is that your baby there? cute little baby, huh.

I can't sleep with the lights on I turn all the lights off in the room I am in but I do leave a night light on in another part of the house so I can see when I go to the restroom. And I don't really know how useful that light is until the power goes out at night and I try to go to the restroom in the dark.

hi chevee with four bright red hearts there!
power going out at night, that need be fixed, i mean i couldn't go on like that. i could remember, we had electricity failure once at midnight and i went all the way to the nearest 24 hour establishment to calm myself. that was an almost sleepless night.
thanks for sharing!

i agree with you there usagi. we have an almost the same experience, except that it was my sister who was doing her project and i waited all the time so we could sleep at the same time. our house then old with windows unsealed and i could imagine creatures watching me from the nearby trees. until now, i feel scared as i do then.
thanks for responding. happy lotting.
