Why God believeing people turn Atheist all of a sudden?

I ofen wonder what might be the reasons which have made staunch believers of God turn to Atheism. I have read many discussions in Mylot where people write that they used to believe in God but now they dont. It has become very common nowadys. But why? What may be the reason. Was the blow too hard for the heart to tolerate? Did those people really lost some of their near and dear ones even after firmly believing in God? Or was some of their materialistic desires not fulfilled? Were they really tired hoping and wishing that one day everything will be fine and that day never came? Or when they needed some one on their side God did not make them feel HIS presence?
If some people are atheist from the beginning, its understadable. But when people following the path of God, suddenly change their path, what happens? Doesen't God try to help them revive their faith. Does God simply gives the choice to follow whichever path one want to? I know God does not like to dictate, but has given men free will. But I would really like to know what makes a man give up his faith entirely? We all know that Karma plays an important part and we suffer due to our past deeds. But still may be we all wish that God should forgive us, irrespective of what we have done. May be when that forgiveness is not granted our heart breaks.
I would like to know your views. Is there any other reason, which we may not know?

I read the Bible and realized it was just like all the other mythology I've read. I realized that if Uri Geller has been able to convince a studio full of people that he can psychically bend spoons, then the power of suggestion can EASILY convince people who have been indoctrinated all their lives that event X is a result of divine intervention.
There's just no foundation in reality that I can find. All signs point to "completely made-up/imagined".

How sad it is that you are missing out on such a wonderful relationship with the One Who made you. Even if you don't believe in Him, He believes in you.

Sad? Once all that depressing "do what I want or suffer in Hell eternally" was off my back, I became much happier. :) It's not like I ever NEEDED any religion to tell me right from wrong--I manage to figure it out all on my own just fine.
But think about what you said. I may not believe in him, but he believes in me. Now, if I was to say the same to you about Odin, would you find that to be compelling or cogent or convincing (alliteration powers, activate!) in any way?
Why would you 'use' that on me, then?

You're right, the bible is a story. I've had doubts my whole life, but kept pretending to believe because I wanted to 'fit in'. Now, I feel like I've come out of the closet because I can say I'm atheist. I think that g-o-d is an updated version of the previous gods to fit the time.
This is a controversial topic, but a good one. It's good to know that I'm not alone.

my top guess would be other Christians. Some of them are just hard to tolerate. My 2nd guess would be the Roman Catholics as a whole. I never turned by back against God, but knew that it was the problem of the Church. I grew up as a Roman Catholic and recognized at a young age that things didn't make sense. The catholic church is filled with hypocrisy in its teachings. and questions about the faith from the young are normally avoided with another question or a "this is what it is" sort of statement. So since then I haven't gone to church. Some people decide that this isn't worth it and just turn atheist. A lot of Christians out there give others a bad name, and one bad apple always spoils the whole bunch. Not only do they give Christian/Catholics a bad name and turn people away from converting, but take the believers and send them away.
My views on many of the hard hitting topics concerned with the Catholic churches are normally against what they think because I believe the bible and God teaches up tolerance and acceptance and not to judge those, so I'd never say to anyone they're going to hell because they love someone society doesn't accept. The bible stands on the basis of Common Sense in the way of living. People really get the message wrong as being "black and white" when its not that straight forward. My husband taught me that. He also left his church (Baptist) because of their 'politics' with in the church which went against what they were supposed to believe. Again, people not understand the true meaning of the message of God.

I agree with you. Most of the religious and spiritual insitutions are full of politics. So I stay out of those places. But we share an eternal relationship with God. No body can teach us that. Its already there. I worship God at home. I try to read genuine and authentic literatures about God. I am afraid of spiritual masters and try staying away from them. Thankyou for your response.

I think a lot of time it's because something bad happens in their life and some idiot tells them it was God's will or that God killed someone they loved or some other silly thing that isn't true about God. And, usually the person who says that has been mislead themselves. The other reason is because someone claiming to be a Christian says or does something cruel and /or ugly that hurts them and they decide they don't want to have anything to do with a God like that.
Well, I understand that. I wouldn't want to be involved with a God who would hurt me, either. The problem is that we are all human and we all say and do things that hurt others in a moment of anger or pain or fear.
I know I've hurt people as well because I have very strong beliefs and very strong opinions and positions regarding those beliefs. In fact, I won't compromise my standards. That doesn't mean that I don't care about people that oppose what I believe in. It's a hard place to be and awkward at times, especially when you care about someone as a person but disagree with their lifestyle.
The problem is that turning from God isn't the answer. Blaming God for a human being's weakness only hurts the person who is turning against God. They are the ones who lose out. The interesting thing is that God's still there waiting for them to turn back to Him.

I hi, i just would like to say that i dont like to talk about religion but i felt compelled to respond to this topic becuse of course its a very compelling subject, but the reasons why i dont discuss it is because i dont want to offend anyone, and i think that we should respect everyones choiceses even if we disagree, im a person of faith, and i dont understand how someone could not believe in god, i have experienced a lot of hardships but i always kept my faith through it all but people have to find there own spirituality, and i cant judge anyone and im also a realist, and you have to look at life and religion realistically, i do understand how someone could feel doubtful about certain things when it comes to religion after all, most of the books we read on the subject are man made and could be diluted and some of the information could be tainted and false.

Hey Rup011:
I am a new convert and I am seeing some differences in the Christian Outlook from a world-wide point of view. I live in the Caribbean and some of these things spoken, seldon happen around me. I find, we here in Barbados are very humble people, and as to stoning a cat, that is rediculous. Some people put up a front, and often disgraces the religion, they are people who call themselves: Christian, Catholic, etc., and their lives do not line up with what they are teaching or practising. There was some point in my life where I questioned those around me, that profess their religion, and do something complete similar. If you are a bible person, (some think it is fiction), but some things said in it has already come to pass, I want to share a verse I read in James 1 Vs2-3: "My bretheren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations, (3) Knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience." I don't think anyone today had been thru persecution like those two thousand years ago. What I found is that people nowadays want everything fast, so God is taking too long for them. "Patience" has no place in peoples live now, only Hospitals. Forgive me if I sound callous, but the truth is the truth. That is one reason why people are changing their identity. Another, material things. People are more faithful to possessions that to their ownselves. Things that will pass away or that are sometimes taken away. We cannot build all hope on these wordly things, as we know it takes some of us a long time to get, and in no time to loose. This causes people to question God, because they have no PATIENCE AND allow THINGS to take control of their lives and not GOD AND THEMSELVES.

What you say is very true. Patience is very important. It takes time to fructify. People have a lot of demands and when these are not fulfilled, they start judging God. But some people are not lucky to get a good spiritual environment. So they face a lot of difficulties. Its all Gods plans. We are just humans.

Our Church tells us it is because they never were children of God in the first place. Look two people can have the same bad experience, one will cling to God and the other will not. Also if God does not open your heart, you may be unable to differentiate between real Christians or people who say they are Christians and are not. Then there is the forgetting that we are all sinners and some of us do grievous sins and expecting perfection. Or they have a wrong idea that Christians must love everyone when they sin and that no matter the way the person is, if he is born that way or assumed to be born that way, they must love the person and not encourage him to change or to change his religious or social belief.
A friend of mine said that when I expressed that a certain person will go to hell, that perhaps God has not opened up that person's heart yet and we should all pray. So it is not the bad deed the person does now, it is what will happen at the end.
And we all should wish for God's forgiveness, but HE did forgive you, the results did not come, but maybe HE wants to show the hardness of other's hearts.
So for that lady who had bad neighbors, if your cat was killed, God's purpose was not to stop the neighbors from doing so, or to get you to hate HIM, but to show others that they were not the Christians they claimed to be. And maybe get you to find some people who are real Christians instead of the fakes.

I am only guessing but I think newbie Atheists are people who thought they had a relationship with their deity and they soon feel that it wasn't there in the first place. There are many who just go through the motions and then one day they decide that enough is enough.

I believe that the two most common reasons that people turn from God is that either their interpretations of the Word of God are disproved or they take the actions of people to be proof that God does not exist. Because Christianity is most common where I am I will explain mostly using Christianity. However, these would apply to most religions.
Most religious scripture was not written by the Manifestation of God on which the religion is based (for example Jesus did not write the Bible). Some parts may have been quoted from the Manifestation. However, the Manifestations rarely directly composed the Writings of the religion (except in the Baha'i Faith). Then, the Writings are translated and retranslated and rewritten over time. Books are taken out and others are put in to replace them to suit each sect of Christianity. Obviously, the resulting Book is not the original and the original was not even directly written by the Manifestation. Then, each individual interprets these Books in their own way so everyone comes to a different conclusion about God, what He is and how the world should be. Clearly, these conflicting views each person developes cannot all be right but people cling to them as if God Himself directly cited them to the individual because it is all they have of God here on earth. Then, when evidence appears to contradict their interpretations they assume that the Word of God must be wrong and that thus, God does not exist. They rarely stop to consider that it is possible that they could be misinterpreting the Scripture.
The second most common reason I am aware of is that people will see some terrible cruelty and blame God and thus turn from Him. They assume that because some people are bad and God created people that either God is bad or does not really exist. And believing He does not exist is better than believing that God is evil.
Of course there are many other reasons, some of which you mentioned but these are the most common I have come across in my experience.

Well, I am not an atheist but I do not believe in a God.
I was brought up a Christian but my mother always forced me to go to church and Sunday school since I was a kid. This made me dislike (hate is such a strong word) going to church as I grew older. Also, I look at the world and wonder if there really is a God. I know people say we are nearing the last days when calamities and stuff will happen that is worse than what we see happening right now, but come on. You are supposed to be this kind and loving God! Why make your people suffer like this?
I stopped believing in God a few years back and I believe it was attempted to restore my faith in him just last year. Why?, I would never know. I am sorry, but my beliefs have always worked fine for me but I am open-minded and I decided to give Him one more try. It was a disastrous point in my life for me. I finally decided, there's no way I could believe in a God! Also, keep in mind...religion is Man-Made...God did not create religion.
Now saying all that, I still respect people's beliefs. I get offended when I hear anyone criticize someone else's religion even if I am not a part of that religion myself. In my country we have lots of religious denominations and we all celebrate them openly!
Now, this is in no way to say that ALL Christians think this way...but I am giving you an example of what a co-worker of mine said. She is a Christian. She was a Christian as a kid, she turned Muslim when she married her husband (maybe that religion didn't work for her cause she is now Christian again and they are still married) The kids choose their own religion, between Islam and Christianity. Now, this woman one day saw a man who is a Hindu with an Ohm sign on his car and she proceeded to proclaim..."Look at that devil thing he have on his car!" I asked, "What devil thing?" and she proceeded to say "The Ohm sign, you don't see them Hindus does worship statues with so many heads and ..." ...on she went. I got totally offended! I told her that she had to right to judge other people's religion! Plus, hey my boyfriend is a Hindu and I would never make him give up his religion for me (he was a Christian when he was younger by the way)
Even though I don't believe in God, I believe in a higher spiritual being. I do not regard this spiritual being as a God, but I also have my spiritual guides and protectors to watch over me. They have their odd way of helping me but it always works out for the best. My beliefs also extend from a mixture of everyone else's religion and my life is just fine the way it is.
I believe in Karma as well. I also try to use "The Secret" in my everyday life. I ask nothing of my spiritual guides and protectors except that they keep me and my loved ones (family and friends) safe. Whatever else I feel I need, I go for it on my own, keeping in mind that if I keep my goal in sight I will get there!
Heaven and Hell? Heaven and Hell are right here on Earth. It is how you make your life. I believe in reincarnation.
And even though I don't believe in a particular religion. I love to participate in Divali (Hindu festival of lights) I dress up for Eid-ul-Fitr (Muslim festival) and I volunteer at churches (like vacation bible classes for kids) because it is always good to keep an open mind, it's fun and...personally I feel SOME religious people are the close-minded ones.

In our country the situation is adversary. More and more people try to find their belief. Some beliefs were distroyed from 1950. Now people here become more wealthy and freedom, and they begin to seek the true meaning of life. Some ones become the believers of God and some ones turn to Buddhism.

While I currently consider myself a Christian, there was a point in my life when I struggled with my belief (I didn't consider myself an athiest, I was just questioning things). When I was a teenager, with every negative thing that happened in my life, I would lose some of my faith. I kept wondering, if there's a God, why don't I feel happy? It took time for me to discover that all those broken hearts and lost friendships were God's way of telling me that I wasn't with the person who would make me happy forever. When I did find that man in my early 20's, God's plan became apparent to me. It wasn't what I expected, but I'm not God. When we lost a bid on a house two years ago, I asked--what happened God? But when I was laid off from my job a year later, I see why God didn't want us to get in over our heads with a larger mortgage. Also, I believe in the presence of the Evil One. He is the one who sometimes sneaks through and makes cruel things happen (like my friend's 4-year old who passed away from cancer last year). The Evil One put that cancer in her head. By the time the doctors caught it, it had progressed too far, and the best God could do was bring her to heaven, where she can enjoy pain-free birthdays, playing amongst the rainbows and clouds. And we will see her again someday. That's God's promise to us. Just because things don't go the way we planned or the way we wanted them to doesn't mean God isn't looking out for us. It means that we misinterpreted God's plan.

For a lot of people who were once Christian, the path to atheism entails a growing understanding that there is no evidence for the existence for God, as well as a number of other factors that can include, but aren't limited to hypocrisy within the religion, the antics of fellow religious people, and current events that leave one wondering why a good and loving God allows all that to happen.

I grew up a devoted Christian but what pushed me the way the most was the churches and I have been to Baptist, Penecostal (went to school in one), and Methodist churches and the gossiping, petty fights and superficiality just got to be ridiculous to me. Once I left the church I feel like I was able to get closer to God and focused more on personal reflection and now I fully embrace Spirituality and its so much more to me because God is still there and now I don't have all the guilt of total banishment if I 'sin' and I never liked the fear instilled in me through the churches and I felt like I could never please God until Spirituality came in my life and now all that is trivial and I still feel that close guidance I felt as a child.

I've been debating some atheist in youtube on why they don't believe in god. They have their issues on why they don't believe in God. I've convinced them on some facts
about the bible, but in many cases they don't listen to you. Some atheist don't have
issues whether someone have lost their someones, simply their beliefs is they don't believe in God.
