People don't listen to me....

My family, and my job (which are directly related) expect me to know everything about computers, and yet, often when I tell them something, they do not listen to me so often our outside IT guy, or someone else has to be called to verify. Does this happen to everyone else too? I just want to know if I am not alone.

It happens to many people. I guess it's not that they don't want to follow your opinion, I guess they just want to have a second or third opinion just to make sure everything will be fine.
Those kind of situations sometimes is really annoying because you are thinking that they don't trust your word especially inside your family.
My advice build a good reputation, always be confident in stating your opinions, don't give solutions if your not sure that it will work, prove to them that your words are solid as a rock. In that way you will be able gain their trust in IT matters. goodluck :

Thank you, that reminds me of a certain Starfleet engineer, who once admited to another Starfleet engineer in the future, that he always gave higher estimates then the actual time it would take him to fix something, so that when he fixed it faster he looked like a miracle worker.
I would never do something like that, but it is true, I just need to really show that I am worthy of their trust, maybe try to handle more of what I can myself instead of always calling our outside guy or whoever else I know. Maybe too what I need is more confidence in what I actually do know.

Yes that is true, heh, I am most certainly not a guy that quit college to start a software company, or the inventor of a mechanical computer either. I'm just a guy that taught myself what I know and can figure things out. I just wish people had more trust in what I say, even though I reall don't know everything, such is life.
