Well for one it does not put the strain on your body that jogging and running does. And most importantly it increases the heartbeat in a slow and steady manner which in turn pumps more oxygen throughout the body, increases metabolism and the production of red blood cells. This would be why skin can also improve with not just walking but any positive exercise! As for the downsides? Like anything really there can be too much of something! As long as no-one overdoes it I don't see many downsides to walking.

Walking will help to strengthen leg, back and stomach muscles, will build stamina and will definitely help with weight loss. You should walk daily, if possible, for as long as you are able to. If you walk for a longer time than is comfortable, you will burn non-fat tissues such as muscle. If you walk for a shorter time than is comfortable, you will not be burning any fat, so it is important to moderate. For instance, walk for five minutes and increase your time if you feel you are able to. It's crucial to not push yourself. You must also combine any exercise you do with a healthy, balanced diet. For the first two weeks you may experience a soreness in your calf muscles but don't be put off by this, you'll get used to it as you go along.
