I really thought that this interest could use a break from the drama that has been created by the coming election. I am also including all the political issues surrounding this election, so by this I don't want to talk about war, abortion, religion, McCain said, Obama said. I just wanted to give everyone a break from all of the BS and just have an honest opinion discussion where no one is afraid to answer because their rating may go down, or they will be criticized for their beliefs. As I looked at the discussions this morning there were many that were the same or basically the same, and didn't really offer much of anything except speculation on the latest news headlines. This discussion is for just honest opinions on who you personally believe is the greatest president the United States has ever had. It doesn't matter if they are living or not, or if they are still the president. I would also like to know why you believe the way that you do, or give us a few of the accomplishments that the president was able to do while in office. Since I started this I had to narrow down my list to just one, and it was very hard. I believe that the best president would have to be Abe Lincoln. Yes was great at public speaking, he can from a poor background, he actually cared about everyone, he helped as many as he could, he reunited a broken nation, and he paved the way for the civil rights movement (The Emancipation Proclamation without who knows what would have become of this nation). Now, it's your turn.

Yeah it was hard to decide between Lincoln and FDR. They were both great presidents. If I wasn't so passionate about civil rights I would have picked FDR. Your choice is great! Thanks for the response.

Without a doubt, I think it has to be FDR. Not just because his was the longest presidency, although that probably helps. His accomplishements were too many to mention. A few include issuing social security cards and creating a SS retirement system, insuring bank deposits, creating a surplus food system that became welfare. He kept the arts alive. There isn't a writer, artist or musician worth their salt who didn't work in the WPA. He not only brought American into the 20th century, he brought America into the 21st century. He also had an unparelled ability to inspire Americans. In mighty dark times, he told them that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself". FDR didn't fear monger, he played to the best part of this country.

Thanks for responding with all the information, I didn't know how much FDR supported the arts, and issuing the social security cards. I really liked him as well. I thought he had some very good speeches. I don't think anyone can forget the quote, especially from my generation with the song that has him saying it in. Very good choice.
