I really really hate my job as a cashier, i have been one for 5 years, and only in the job till i finish university.
Most of the customers are nice, however there are a lot, most of them snobbish who when you say hello to then etc just completely ignore you and have no manners at all.
I hate it when customers tell me how to do my job............yes i can see the difference between the wines that you have got, and no i haven't scanned anything wrong, i dont make the prices up.
You're either treated like you are stupid or to the other extreme that you should know every price and offer of every item in the store and get annoyed at you if you dont know.........try reading the labels on the shelf (i know sometimes the labels aren't in the right place but if they were read properly you would answer your own question)
Any other cashiers get treated the same

I don't think I treat cashiers that way. I know to smile and thank them as I would with other human beings. I also can see how many of them are students just trying to make some money to help support themselves. I may have to get a job as a cashier when I start my college classes.

All cashiers get treated like that. I hate dealing with customers. I don't know why they always think that they are better than the cashiers. people are just so rude these days. I can usually get a good laugh out of their stupidity though, so jokes on them. good luck with your job.

Oh I hate it when someone wants me to ring something up and then when i give them the subtotal decide they don't want to item after all! it's like can't you think to add in sales tax on something? I have had people ask me why the price was more than what was marked on the book. A few times already I have had to say well sale tax. Then of course there are the ones who ask me how much something is when it is discounted, then they want to use a coupon on the sales items which isn't allowed. Then they get mad cause you won't validate their coupon. One guy got mad because we wouldn't hold EVERY copy of the Time magazine with Obama on it. I hate customers sometimes.

Oh really! And I always thought cashiers were excellent in basic maths and concentration (while I am lousy at both) and not to mention the huge responsibility they take alongwith having to live each day with your honour and integrity under the scanner.
Cant say about treatment though, coz I would never touch a cahier’s job.

I would hope that all the customers are not rude because there is no excuse for anyone to be like that. Sometimes people forget that without people doing certain jobs, nobody else would be able to function as well. I am a truck driver for example and a number of people look down on me because of it. Now I am not ignorant, I am not uneducated but I happen to enjoy driving trucks plus doing that job allows my partner and I to live where we want tio and also to do what we enjoy most - organic farming in a small town in western new South Wales. Many people take jobs for reasons that have nothing to do with their intelligence or education level.
To quote my sister-in-law. Every business neds someone to clean the toilets and make the tea or the workers would not be there. Those people are just as important to the business as the personw ho sells the product the are producing.
So do your job, smile at the customers and accept that the rude ones must have a pretty miserable life. Don't let themn spoil your life (and day at work) with their petty attitude.

lol.. those people are stupid. i never knew that people have this stereotype. i'm not like that. I am a kid who is willing to try things to see how it really is. So if I ever stereotype it's with good reason but I keep that to myself. I have high respect for people who work. I hope that others have that too. Even for the people who are already working I have noticed a lot of working people who do not treat other people right because of their position.I believe that respect should be worn around the neck wherever you go or whoever you are. We're all the same here PEOPLE. If we ever die we all come down to the same thing composed with the same crap.

I can see your point of view, as I have done my time in the retail world. I have always and will always say 'retail sucks'. However....as a customer, I try to be polite to everyone who serves me, I do not talk on my cell phone while I'm checking out, I say hello, if they ask me questions or are friendly, I'll be friendly right back.
On the flip side of the coin, I'm sick and tired of unloading my cart on the conveyor belt and having my cashier's conversation with another cashier two lanes over or the bagger, way more important than to start ringing up my groceries, or even acknowledging that I'm standing in front of them. There's nothing else that makes me go from 0 to b**** in 1.2 seconds. I also hate when I drive through at a fast food place, and the cashier practically throws my change at me.
Honestly, I don't think it has anything to do with your position or job, I think it's come down to the fact that people are in their own world of entitlement now a days, and it's made us rude and inconsiderate. In fact, I want to thank you for this post, because I think tomorrow, while I'm out running my errands, I'm going to go out of my way to be bright and cheery!

it's almost like they make you personally responsible for their wallet, too.
my daughter did this for a while. she said people AUTOMATICALLY adopt a
mean attitude as soon as they get to you. like you are going to swindle
lots of money off of them.
it's built into the bar code.
of course, doing it all for minimum wage AND maintaining a pleasant attitude
is very hard !
if i'm gracious, or start some small talk, to a cashier the people behind me
think, "oh, she just doesn't know how to play the system."

Yea, people can be so rude at times, my sister use to work as a cashier and she would often tell me about experience's she had with rude customers, and costamors do have bad experience's to, but i think that its important that we maintain our composer when dealing with others and try to understand that just because someones is doing a job serving people dosent mean that we have a right to miss treat or make someone feel bad my sister has worked a lot of jobs that required her to serve people sometimes you do what you have to do to pay your bills, and she is now earning her nursing degree, and i definitely don't think just because person works as cashier that there stupid.

I do not know of any cashier getting treated that way. As a customer and a former high school student who could not get to University because of lack of funds and having to work, I found out that most of the cashiers in the stores were in fact, University Students. The stores hired them right away, giving them preference because they had to pay for their tuition.
So anyone who does not know this is just using his head as a place to put his face.

Crazy customers.
Now, I know that I should treat cashiers more tactfully. I hope you finish university soon so you could find a good job that would make you feel happy . Don't worry about those customers. I think that you shouldn't think much about their behavior. A lot of people are rude so don't think they just do that to cashiers.

You are so right! I've been a cashier at several different stores. Some customers as sweet as can be. They appreciate your help and are just friendly. Others on the other hand act like they've never been taught manners in their life.
I learned real fast not to take things seriously and if anyone had a problem and couldn't handle explaining it in a rational tone they could speak to my supervisor. That always did the trick.
I do agree that some people just should not work in retail. You need to be pleasant and smiling...even when the customers are acting like brats.
My favorites were the ladies who'd start yelling because we couldn't accept their expired coupon...their 2 month expired coupon I might add.

Hi OConnell,
I never worked in retail until a point in my life when I decided to make a change. I got a job at Michaels Arts and Crafts Store. I wasn't a cashier, but I did work on the floor sometimes. I was the Activities Director. The first time someone didn't respond to me when I spoke to them, I thought it was really strange. I told myself they just didn't hear me. But, then it happened again. It was as though I was invisible. What a strange experience. I had never had that before, anyplace. I'm not sure if they thought I was not worth speaking to - If they were somehow better, or what. It happened atleast a couple of times a week after that.
If you hate your job - truly. You need to look into doing something else. Please, life is too short. It's not like you get paid a lot of money being a cashier. Even if you have to go back to school or get some other training. There is nothing worse than hating going to work every day. I wish you joy in your work and life.
