A Question of Human Nature.

How is it that when we are down and out we tend to envy another's good fortune? For some people it seems that everyone should be down in the same pit they are in and that no one should get a break. It leaves me wondering what makes us so insensitive and bitter this way. What are your thoughts?

There is a saying that "misery loves company" and I think this applies to what you are describing. I think that people have a tendency to compare themselves to others and that not only when they are down and out, but even when they are doing well, there is a tendency to envy someone who is doing even better. I think also that it is "lonely at the bottom" so it is somewhat comforting when you are in a difficult situation to realize that other people are experiencing the difficulty too or are doing even worse than you are doing. I don't really know that it is insensitivity or bitterness when people feel this way, but it does seem to be human nature.

I have had a lot of down points in my life, most of them being financial. I am a good person, i would do anything for anyone..even if it meant giving the shirt off my back. I think some of it might have to do with Bad things happening to good people and good things happening to not so good people. A person i knew..i wouldn't really call him a friend applied for the same job i did. We both had interviews the same day, his being before mine. I would describe him a selfish person, the type of kid who can always run to mommy or daddy for money when they need it. I never even got my interview that day, because they hired him right on the spot (he walked out on the job 2 months later). Did i envy him for this...yes i did. he didn't need that job as badly as i did, and we both knew deep down he is horrible at keeping a job and would just quit or get fired anyways.
