High hopes, infallible work ethics - the first job is a great experience. Its actually the step to the big bad (?) world of unknowns. Some live it well and some do not. But the first impression, the first experience is always very special and different. We are young, fresh, energetic and ready to do it for ourselves - it's indeed special. That's how I feel.
Tell me all about yours.

My FIRST ever job was as a general help at a tire and wheel shop. I was about 14 or so and in High School and all I had to do was all the menial tasks like sweeping and stuff like that. It didn't last long though as I ended up moving interstate. My first FULL TIME job after leaving school was in a restaurant and I lasted there for a little over two years. I pretty much worked my way through many roles in this job and although the pay was crap I did enjoy it most of the time! I have had many different jobs from hospitality and labouring to singing and real estate; but I never, ever expected to end up where I am now though! Life has a funny way of sending us off in unexpected directions!

James,
that's quite a variation! You had you finger in variety of pie, I guess. But this world is amazing - ever short of ideas and jobs.
I wish you more luck in life. Your current job is intriguing me, would you like to share?

Good luck on your new job.
I feel, change is always good. It helps us with different avenues and saves us from stagnancy. That might not be the case with you but trust me, in most cases it is. I wish you luck in this. And I am sure you will excel no matter what.

Thanks for the best response mimpi! My current job? Well I WAS a Vice President of Global Business Development for an International communications technology firm but I actually resigned last Monday after two years or so with them. I have been in this field for around 14 years now I guess. I am currently setting up a new company with some investors in the USA and will be moving to DC by the end of the year! The new company details are still hush-hush so that's all I have to say on that front for now! New beginnings for me though!

Hi mimpi.....My first job was as a stenographer in Ahmedabad in one of the company that made safety valves..It was like a nightmare for me because those were the days when there was no computer, but that tak!! tak!!! tak!!.....typewriter, where if you made mistakes or if your boss makes some changes then everything was to be typed overall again. Also typing of address etc was very tiring and would always become obstacle for me to leave office at time.....Well I did not work as steno for more than an year as my daughter was very small and was too much burden for my mother in law and sister in law to take care of .....so soon I was back to my housewife job was was better that this nightmare.lol. Thank god today we have computers so now work is not nightmare for me but fun....nice discussion mimpi.

I have just logged on after many days and responding to yours first. I missed you a lot.
And see now you start a discussion like this which is so apt for me. I have just joined in as an apprentice to a new task development concern. Its fun to start with but you have like it in order to excel. I have taken it up to support my study expenses.
How are you?

The first job is always special. It's a time when we first experience the sense of responsibilty. It's a time when we look forward to put to test all that we learnt for so many years. The heightened enthusiasm. The feeling was great.
Mimpi,
My first job has always been special to me. It put to test my knowledge and qualifications of being an engineer. It made me understand and experience the practicality of the things that i had learnt. It brought out a whole new me, striving to perform, motivated as never before and wanting to be recognised. I sure got all that i set out to do and more.
But alas as you have put it, in a very short time I got exposed and also understood the ways of the big bad world. The ego's, the arrogance, the corruption due to power and money...
It certainly sharpened some of my skills and those being the skills of survival, by constantly trying to be the best.

My first ever job was on a farm hoeing weeds from sugar beets, beans and potatoes. We were paid by the acer. It was hot and dirty. We went from sun up to sundown. It was different alright. I was 14 at the time.

There isn't much more to it than I carried a hoe up and down rows of beets, beans or potatoes and chopped down weds that were growing int the fields. Sometimes it was difficult to walk because the middle of the row was slanted. If a field had a lot of weeds then we would have to stop often to sharpen the hoes. Some time the weeds would be big enough that we would leave the hoes at the end of the field and just walk along and pull the weeds.

I started with a very unimportant job in the office of a Charted Accountant. I worked there for few months, thereafter I got my regular job, since then I have not changed it or say rather did not get an opportunity to change it. I am in the same job and am enjoying it like anything. I try to discharge my duties with full honesty and sincerity.

My first job was the job of a customer care executive in a domestic call centre. I worked in a call centre of Airtel for around 2 months during my college days. Actually, I always wanted to experience how it feels like to be working in a call centre. I used to consider that job very easy going. But believe me, its not. When you have to sit listening to customers for continuous 8-9 hrs with the headphones on ur ears continuously and targets set for the day to receive over 100 calls, its never gonna be easy at any time. Moreover, complaints and abuses from customers would rather spoil ur day. I joined that job during the last year of my college as i had some free time, so thought of experiencing the same worth an extra hand of pocket money into my pocket. May be it was a domestic call centre, thats y i had a tough schedule. bu anyway, I learnt one thing, everything that looks easy is not really easy in actual. I tried for a different process and not voice process in another call centre, and got successful too, but did not join it since i had my brother's wedding coming up and then had to focus on my engineering too.
Currently, I am working as a Software Enginner and i am quite pleased with my job as for now, but that experience will remain unforgettable for me!!

My first job was when I was just 16. Ofcourse I had lied to the office about my age. But even then I was pampered a lot in the office. Nobody complained if I did not finish my work for the day. If I did not carry my lunch I had 10 others to share their lunch with me. I was never allowed to stay hungry. If I was sad I was questioned by everyone. Had to tell them the reason why I was sad. Overall I think I spent more time being pampered than doing any work.

Hi mimpi1911! Yes, you are right that it was indeed special. I was very young, fresh, energetic and so excited to conquer the world. haha..My first job ever was a few weeks after my college graduation. I was hired as a Municipal Trade Officer in one of the government agencies here in our country. I just stayed there for a few months because I got a chance to start a business of my own. I have two businesses which which I managed and co-owned. But all the people I have worked with in my first job were all so supportive and all were willing to teach me the ropes. I have learned a lot from them even my stay was cut short. I have loved dressing in a corporate attire and have loved the heels. haha..
Take care always..God Bless!

My first job ever was at a small local produce store. I started there in Mov of 1988 4 months before i was 16 and old enough to work, but they didnt check ID back then..lol. I ended up staying with taht store for 10 yrs! I continued to go in and "visit" as a handful of the people that worked there when i started were still there including my boss that hired me. It was quite sad though as about a month ago (20 yrs after i started working there ... OMG I feel old) the store closed. They have 1 other location, there use to be 5, but its quite a distance from me so i dont go there. Everytime i drive pass the place, i get a little sad, as it was such a big part of my life for so long.
It was fun to go visit because my boss and i would talk about me "growing up" right in front of his eyes. He witnessed me getting married even while working there. Then 5 yrs after i left ther I had my son, and my boss has been able to sort of watch him grow. Definitely a part of my life i will never forget, and a fwe of the people i worked with during those yrs definitely had an impact on my life that i will also never forget.

My first job was working at a bakery/restaurant and boy was it an experience. I worked in the bakery and did all the morning bakings including bread, danishes, cinnamin rolls, cookies, pecan rolls, cakes, etc. Needless to say that was NOT good for my waistline. I was not a big fan of the job for one reason. Most of the cooks and cleaning crew were of hispanic decent that did not speak any English. Most of them, except for maybe a couple were dirty and always looked at the women sexually. It was horrible. I learned one spanish phrase working there and it was "toca toca" which meant "do not touch," lol.
I worked there for about a year and a half and then my aunt got me a great office job that paid almost double an hour. I will always remember my time at that restaurant as it was my first job, but I don't think I will ever miss it!
