Have you memorize your keyboard especially the numbers?

My two jobs require encoding of a lot of information in the computer system. In my daytime job, I encode data from the index cards which has the investigation series number, names, dates, etc. In my nighttime jobs, I encode data from the manifest which has manifest number, sender and addressee with their address. And with these two jobs, i came to memorize the keyboard, so I can type without looking at it. But with regards to numbers, I always use the number pad located at the right side of the keyboard. Now friends and dear mylotters, I want to know how you type the numbers, is it from the main keyboard or from the number pad? Laptop users can also share their views and experiences about numbers. I can adopt to both the desktop and laptop keyboards. In my past work, I've been encoding accounts and test results for the university and memorized the number pad without looking at it. Now I am using a laptop and I can say that I get used or rather I've memorized the position of the numbers.

I am glad that you already get used to that. It is really a hard time to adjust to laptop when you are a long time user of the ordinary keyboard in a desktop computer.

HI neildc,
I do memorize some but my fingers are crossing from each other! LOL! I tried to use proper but it takes time for me...Working online everyday helps me to master some of it and I am using the number pad when typing or encoding for humbers!

slowly and by a lot of time being in front of the computer really makes us more familiar with the keyboard. basically, it is better to enter the numbers using the desktop, but with laptop users it is much harder to do it. i also use some laptops but i am uneasy with the numbers.

After 20+ years as a typesetter, I've memorized the entire keyboard, numbers included. I use the numbers at the top of the keyboard. It just feels more natural to me.
It used to drive my kids crazy, now it drives my husband crazy because half of the letters are worn off of my keyboard and you can't see them at all. One of my sons is an excellent typist, too, and he can type without looking, but my other son and husband need to look at the keyboard or they're lost! LOL
My husband keeps telling me that I need a new keyboard. I always ask him the same question, "Why?" I have no problem with it.
Anyway, back to numbers. It took me longer to have them memorized or to have my fingers 'programmed' to always hit the right ones, but I eventually got there. If I was forced to use the number pad, I'd have to look at them. I hope that never happens!

I don't know if I remember typing this before, but from what I remember, I did take typing and keyboarding classes when I was in college, and I barely survived with a borderline grade, but it was enough for me to pass it anyway.
I also had help from freeware programs that helped me type correctly. After all, I was obsessed with computers, but I always had to peck at the keyboards and look down on the keys to find what keys to type. Now letters are something I can handle, but the numbers...that's another story, and I didn't get that far, but I still memorized the rest. It's like me reading a certain amount of Japanese in my case; I can read hiragana and katagana, but I can't read the complex kanji...but I sidetracked myself a bit. I can only remember the simple parts of the keyboard, but I don't have the number part down just yet.

Hello neildc.
I use the numbers on the keyboard. My current computer, a laptop, does not have the number pad out to the side. But, I probably wouldn't use that anyway. Sounds like you have grown to be quite proficient at typing. Good for you. Take care.

I took typing in high school, so I've never had to look at the keyboard. Once you learn where to put your fingers and learn the technique of typing, it's easy to remember. I use the keyboard numbers, not the touch pad. My laptop doesn't have a touch pad like my desktop. But I've always used just the keyboard for typing numbers. To me, it is much easier.

I only have the letters memorized. I need to learn the numbers because i am studying to become an accountant, but I've made no real progress. I learned to type in the 4th grade, so I've had years of practice with the letters. (I am 18) But I just haven't really used the numbers in my everyday life. If you have to work with numbers a lot you are supposed to use the number pad. The numbers at the top are just for everyday typing, not for use in accouting, or number series entry, so it is a good habit for you to use the pad. It is a lot faster to use the pad since the numbers are located closer to eachother.

No, I didn't memorize the letters on keyboard, how funny that I still using two to three fingers to type letters.

I have a similar kind of work i used to have same problem earlier but now i am ok with the numeric pad of keyboard. To use numeric pad you should be in better sitting position and initially you can use numeric pad by seeing it as the experience grows you will become perfect in it. For whole keyboard you should go to typing class for at least one month.
Hope this will help you
Thanx

Funny you mention that! I took typing in school - the most exciting course I ever wanted to take! Was really good at it but missed the 2-3 days that we spent learning the upper row of number keys. I never picked it up. To this day 35 years later and having had a speed (in my hay=day) of 90 WPM...I still can't use that upper row of numbers in my key strokes! I also learned the calculator key pad by touch, so that is what I use, although I hear some keyboards no longer have that on the side. See - all you MyLOtters still in high school....if you don't go to school, you will miss something and you never know when in life that waht you missed could have helped you in life! STAY IN SCHOOL!!!!!

thats interesting because i use the numbers above the letters, however its weird that i dont use the ones on the right, because as a cashier i have a number pad just the same, and i have a photographic memory so i have the kepad in my head and can type 16 digits for a reduced barcode without looking at the keypad......

Hi Neil,
I have a LapTop, so the numbers are above the letters on the key board but I still have to look at my keybord when I'm typing thought I can type quite fast these days considering I have not type for years.

I've been typing since I was 12, I don't have to look at the keyboard and I'm pretty fast - but - I never learned the top row. I'm not sure why. I'm getting better but I still for the most part have to look at the keys when I have to type numbers or the characters above the numbers. Sometimes I do use the numeric pad.

I can do both without looking at the keyboards. I don't know but maybe because of my experience in handling the computers and the jobs I did in the past I already have memorized the keys of a desktop computer keyboard. The tricks are on the so called 'home keys.' For alpha keys, your fingers should be guided by the letters 'f' and 'j' which our left and right forefingers respectively should always be. Same with the number pads the home key is the 'number 5', where your right middle finger should always be whenever you are doing calculations.
But its a different story for the laptop since the numbers are atop the alpha keys. On laptops I tend to look to see the number keys during calculations.

Well when I was a kid my parents send me for typing classes. After 6 months I graduated from the class and successfully managed to memorized the keyboard entirely. But when typing numbers I find it much more nicer yet funner for some odd reason to use the number keypad on the right!
