I'm hoping this thread will help us cut down electricity usage at least briefly! Its an idea that crept into my mind a couple of days ago and I'm gonna post it in as many forums as possible. Right now I am switching off the fan in my room for 10 minutes even though I need to use it. If you are reading this take an effort and do something similar - switch off a fan, the TV, a heater or something for 10 minutes. If this is done by 100s of us at MyLot everyday I'm sure that we will all be able to save a tiny bit of electricity!! It may be very small but I'm sure it will be useful!
Are you game to try this out. Try it and post here - right now i can feel beads of sweat forming on my forehead but I am feeling really happy!

This probably won't work. I'm not sure about appliances, but when you turn a normal light on it uses as much energy to switch on as leaving it running for about half an hour. So, I'm guessing if that original surge uses that much energy in lightbulbs then it's probably the same, if not worse, in electrical appliances.

I just remember being taught as part of our electronics science module that most bulbs use a large amount of powere when first switched on and if you're just leaving a room for half an hour it's more energy efficient to actually leave it on. It's certainly worse with flourescent lights, and better with energy saving bulbs though, from what I can remember.
