I would agree with you. It is a little weird here in America, where it isn't as popular, but globally, it has such a following and with how nations get behind their athletes during the World Cup, it is hard not to say it is the most popular. Second I would think is Track and Field (also known as athletics), just because it is easily accessible to many people around the globe. You don't even need a track for a lot of it, especially since marathons are included in track and field.

atheletics has many disciplines that's why it became so huge if you see it that way but if you are just talking of single sport competition then football is the biggest single sport followers in the world. and when world cup comes, each nations celebrate and support their teams and many are glued to their TV screens. world cup is like the summer olympics that gathers huge crowd and considering that it is just one sport.

Soccer is definitely the most popular game in almost the whole world, even USA is getting familiar with soccer after LA Galaxy's capture of icon David Beckham. And not forgetting the most popular leagues in the world (English Barclays Premier League, Italian Serie A, Spanish Primera Division, etc) has millions of fans in soccer mad countries all over the world. Of course the media plays an important role here. Basketball is very popular too, boosted by the marketing success of NBA with icons like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar some 15 years ago. They have also successfully opened up Asian markets such as China, Malaysia and Singapore, which have huge fan bases. Baseball, on the other hand, is still restricted to USA, Japan and Taiwan. Cricket, a similar game, is adopted by India and Pakistan. American football or hockey are mostly restricted to USA only.

Though I'm first a Basketball fan and then a football fan... Football is the "king of the sports" each nation have a national team in football... (still don't understand why they call it soccer in US and Football is called a game where feet are used most of it just to run :P hehe... anyway :))

this is just weird and strange to me.. you are mentioning of football alone and the photo depicting is is american football. when you said football, it refers to the ball game so popular in europe by using their feet to kick, joggle, make tricks and shoot on a rectangular goal with a goalkeeper has 11 players each team on the pitch. the photo that you have is american football that has quarterback that directs the game and no goalkeeper, it has a "Y" shape goal and basically they are throwing the ball, hold on to it and run to the end zone. so if you are referring to the european football which is called soccer in america then it is the biggest single sport game in the world.

Soccer would be the most popular sport globally. This would have a lot to do with the fact that at a non elite/ professional level it is so easy to play. If you can run and kick an object on the ground then you can play soccer. As far as footy codes go the only one rising in popularity is Australian Rules. This will one day be the World Game as it is quite simply the best.
