Gothic Craze?

Ok here is the question. Do you think the whole 'gothic' persona is a temporary phase or a more permanent lifestyle? Do you think it is about getting attention, being different, or something else? No haters please. This is a friendly discussion. Liv

I think some people dip into it in thier teens, and others it's a more permanent part of who they are. I never think it's fair when people say that they'll grow out of it, as it's not an age specific thing at all, and I know very young goths and some very old goths.

Sorry, Galena. When I wrote that people outgrow it, I didn't even think of age. It just gets old for most people, and they move on, as they do D&D or other role-plays. I happen to think Goth styles are lovely, and if I weren't an old woman who's quite overweight, I might just try some myself!

on the contrary, if you're a bit overweight, gothic styles can be among the most flattering out there for you.

I'm a little bit of a goth. It's not really a driving force. I think that you are right. It rerally is up to the individual. It's almost like patients in a doctors office. Each case is different. Liv

Depends on the person, I know a lot of people who out grew it, others who stuck with it. Sometimes you want to be a certain way but can't due to your profession. For example, I would love to dye my hair purple, but I can't do that and teach little kids.

kpendragon, huh? There's a bit of the Goth in the legends, too. Many Goths try to be Morgan leFey, or even your namesake -- not Arthur but Uther! It's fun and it does get a lot of attention, but most people outgrow it before very long. There's a recent book by John Sandford, Phantom Prey, in which Goth culture plays a very important role. If you haven'tread it yet, you're in for a little fun and a very quick read.

This is true. I adapted the name from one of my favorite books called MISTS OF AVALON. Phantom Prey? I will have to look into that. Thank you for your words. Liv

If you compare it to the Hippies of the 60's 70's and 80''s you can see that it is a fad that becomes a lifestyle for some. Usually these fads start out as a rebellious attempt for attention. What is funny for me is that most people who join these groups will say that they are trying to be different and not conform to main stream society. But, how different are you when you dress and act like thousands of others just like you. Happy MyLotting my friend.

I know people that have been goths for the last 20 years. All depends how much the individual wants to adapt the lifestyle.
