Indian school girls tie "rakhis" (holy thread) onto the wrists of soldiers of Indian Border security Force (BSF) on the ocassion of Hindu festival "Raksha Bandhan", at Indo-Pak Wagah Border, some 30km from Amritsar, northwest India's Punjab state, 16th August 2008.. "Raksha Bandhan" or "Rakhi" is a Hindu festival celebrating the relationship between brothers and sisters and is marked by tying a rakhi or holy thread by the sister on the wrist of her brother wishing him joy, happiness, good health, prosperity and long life. The brother in return offers a gift to his sister and vows to look after her and protect her. it is a beautiful festival and very emotional i had mailed the Rakhi to my brother as he is in another city and had gone to the temple and prayed to God for his happiness and long life...this festival strengthens the bond between the brother and sister..and is a bonding of lifetime..do you have any such festivals? did you know about "Rakshabandhan"? how did you celeberate "Rakhi"?

hi dear thank you for writing in...best part is that in India almost everybody celebrates it (mostly) irrespective of the faith they follow...and i was touched by this news because the BSF soldiers are protecting the country and all of us and they even sacrifice their lives so that we common people stay comfortably and happily and it is our duty to wish them safety and long life and pray to God for them as well just like our own brothers..take care dear

We have nothing like that here in America, although we should. That sounds like a beautiful custom. We have mother's day, father's day and grandparent's day here but nothing to strengthen the bond between brothers and sisters.
I hope your prayers for your brother are answered!

I have never heard of this before your post. It sounds so wonderful. Here in the US I don't know of anything like this. Is this a tradition that is only celebrated by the Hindu people or does the entire country do this as well? Thanks for sharing this it sounds like something everyone should do with their siblings to keep them close.

hi dear this is mainly a Hindu festival but it actually is not religion based because it is all about tying a thread around the brothers wrist and praying to God for his good health and Long life but it is more about emotions and feelings..so in India almost everybody celebrates it irrespective of the faith they follow...Rakhi can be tied to anyone whom you feel emotionally attached to as a brother it is not bound by blood relations i have Muslim brother though i am a Hindu i am tying Rakhi to him for the last 15 years and i love him as much as my own brother..this is indeed a great festival
