Can your pet be trusted that you can take him/her off the leash at the park?

Hi everyone!
My brother, his wife and I went to the park yesterday (Sunday) and I brought my pets with me. My brother wanted me to take them off their leash but I don't want to because I'm afraid they might ran off. Besides, I have never taken off their leash whenever we go the park and I'm afraid they might not listen to me when I call them. But my brother insisted and he said he will help me to run after my pets.
I looked at my pets and I know they would want to have fun so I took off their leash and just constantly following them wherever they go just to be sure I can pick them easily if I have to. Then my brother started running around and they followed and I can see they are having fun! Even when the kids played with them they were so good. They ran with the kids and once in a while when they ran far off from me I call them and they would immediately come back.
It seems I can really trust my pets after all. This the first time and their behavior is pretty impressing. My trainings have paid off. They were very obedient to me so whenever we get to visit the park, I will let them have the freedom of having fun and running free.
How about your pets? Do they get to run free in the park too? How about in a beach?

That sounds like they had a great time and so did you and family!
My dog is allowed to run free. He's trust-able.. He has been so far, but i am still always careful and keep a good eye on him when i do let him off.
I used to take him to the dog parks when he was younger but i don't anymore because stuff was breaking out and you never know how good some elses takes care of their dog and i don't want my dog getting something from another dog. So i have just never gone back to them.
but when i used to take him he would follow me around the park lol he would run off and play with another dog but he always ran back to me. He was ever out of my sight.
I have taken him to the dog beach here once. it's about an hours drive away from me but i went one morning with some girl i used to work with and we took our dogs.
she had two little yorkies and i have a big 65lb mutt lol i had never tooken my dog to a beach before but we when we got there i just let him off the leash and didn't really worry about him running away from me because he never had before anywhere else and he never did at the beach either.
but he did get over heated and we had to leave, poor thing was so hot!
He's a good boy and thats why hes allowed off his leash. I also think he doesn't run away because hes used to it..
I take him over by the lakes where i live and let him off while i jog around
and sometimes at night if i am just taking the garbage out of letting him go potty i will take him out without his leash because i know he'll follow me.
oh and he throws a fit when i leave him, sits there and crys while looking at the window waiting for me to return. lol He couldn't leave me because he can't stand it when i leave him!
and i think a lot (not all though) pets won't run away as long as they are happy enough within their home. So your dogs must really love and be happy with you!

Hi! Oh yes I know my dogs are happy cause I make it a point to keep them happy and we really love each other so much.
Next Sunday I will bring them to the park again so they can have fun again. I wish I can bring them to the beach too. I'd really like to see them swim hehe. But their shihtzus and the salty water might make their hair sticky and stiff. Besides I can't bring a hair blower to dry off their hair at the beach.
Anyways I think your dog is having the time of his life with you. He's a very good dog and obedient to you too. I admire the relation you have with your dog.
Ciao! Let's keep out pets happy always!

Me and my boyfriend live in an apartment so we don't really have a yard. We have 2 very playful dogs..1 is a golden retriever the other is a cocker spaniel. Across from our building is a big park. We take them to a big opening in the park and play ball with them everyday, off their leashes.
They are good listeners and they never run off, lol they are more concerned about the ball and catching it.

I always let the dogs off the leash. Most times I won't even put the dogs on a leash as they are very well trained and they don't go running off. And when they do I just call their name and they come trotting back over to me. However with the cats. We have some that roam free but we do have a cat that will only be let loose around our yard so that she doesn't run off. She is very skitish so we don't take her to the park or anything. She knows who she likes and who she doesn't and we don't need her getting spooked by all the people at the park.
