Tired of your salad going bad before you can eat it?

I found a really good way to make it last, especially the pre-bagged kind. Wash it well and let it dry a bit then use a clean towel or a paper towel to absorb all the moisture you can. Then put it in a plastic bowl with a couple of balled up paper towels. Put the lid on, shake the container and put it in the fridge. I tried this and it really works! My salad will last 7-10 days this way, which is great as I live alone and don't like to pay the price for individual salads!

Thanks for the tip. I also buy the bagged salad, as I will eat salads for lunch several times a week, but I always end up throwing out about half the bag. I will be sure and try this with my next salad purchase, not only will it make the salad go further, it also saves money in the long run.

I have to be in the mood to eat salad so you can imagine how much of it used to spoil! Glad I could help.

Wow, a week or more is a really long time! If I have to buy salad I like to buy salad leaves with more sturdy leaves, like chinese cabbage, as they last longer. Alternatively, if I can get lettuce which still has some stem, putting it in a glass of water in the fridge helps to keep it going. Of course, the best way of keeping it fresh is to grow it yourself of course! Of all the things you can grow, I reckon pick and come again salad leaves have got to be one of the most money saving and you can grow them easily in a window box or similar.

I plan to grow some next year but I'll have to stagger them out a little, as there's only me and I can't eat salad all day! I'll probably be sharing with the neighbors a lot.

I have stopped buying the salad in a bag because I'm the only one that eats it and I lose at lest a half a bag every time. So now I buy the whole head and wrap it in ton foil and it keeps a good long tome. but I will try you suggestion and see what happens. I like the bagged salad because of the variety. If it works then I will be abe to buy more than one kind of lettuce and make my own salad mix.

I'm glad I could help. Yes, I like the bagged salad, too. Have you tried the taco toss? I love that stuff! I found that if I pour a packet of mild taco seasoning into a bottle of no-fat ranch dressing, it tastes just like the taco toss salad dressing that's included in the bag and has practically no calories!

That sounds good but no I haven't even seen it in the grocery store I'll have to look for it and try it the next time I buy salad fixings. It might be a regional thing.

dragon - oh, the wise dragon speaks again. You always have original thoughts to share, and I see you helped so many people, including me! Did you know you can keep celery fresh by storing it in a closed jar, filled with water in your 'fridge? This helps me, because being single, I can't eat a whole bunch of celery before it gets limp. Sorry it took me so long to respond. travel lightly, anawar out

My mom used to do that! But it'd sit there all year with me. I have a neighbor that I split things with, both of us like potatoes and celery and carrots and stuff but will never eat even the smallest bags before they go stale so we share. Whoever buys something halves it with the other and it's still less expensive than buying those dumb single serving bags!

This sounds like a great tip, thanks for sharing! my problem is that our fridge seems to get very cold at the bottom where the salad boxes are - no matter what the temperature dial is set at, the salad always freezes - and then of course it's extra soggy when it defrosts again!

Every fridge I've ever had does that! I keep my salad in the meat drawer that's about in the middle of the fridge, or on a shelf above the middle.

You're very welcome! It will also work using a plastic bag with most of the air removed. I don't have a nice big plastic bowl so I use the bags.

Yes, every penny helps. I don't have a big container so I use the bags the grocery provides to put produce in.

That sounds like a good idea. We do not buy the pre-bagged kind anymore because my husband says they are more expensive, so I have to buy separate lettuce and the other stuff. So I guess I have to cut it all up into separate containers, but there s the problem, not enough plastic bowls to hold one week's worth and also what about the tomatoes? I wish there were large enough plastic bags to protect lettuce, because mine lasts about two weeks tops.

I don't have a container either, I posted it that way because most people have them. I use the bags that you put produce in that the store provides and it works just as well. I squeeze out most of the air but leave a little in so the towels can absorb the moisture. And to save on paper towels, I put an old clean washcloth in the bag. I tailored the advice to people who may not be the frugal maniac that I am!

Thank you for the tip, I am not a lettuce eating person, but my daughter is always getting on my case to eat more salads. So when I buy a bag I usually let it go bad before I can eat it. This way maybe it will last long enough for me to finish a bag. Do you know if this will work if you add anything to the lettuce or it has to be by it's self to stay fresh?

Thank you for sharing. I will have to try to remember this tip next time I get salad. We throw out over half a bag from it going bad, each time I buy it .

I will have to try that. That's a good suggestion. Thanks for sharing. That's kind of like putting the slice of bread in the cookie container to keep them moist. Thanks.

I've done that before, too. I've also put a little apple peel in a bag of bread when it started to go stale, works like a charm.

Wow, what a great tip - thanks. I love salad. I put all kinds of vegetables in it. However, I usually don't buy the largeer bags, because I end up throwing so much of it away. Now, I can save some money with the bigger bags and still get to eat it all before it spoils. Thanks again.
