Fighting Germs...

I’ve recently started using a hand sanitizer. I have several bottles that I keep around the house and take with me when I go out. I’ve noticed that I don’t seem to be getting sick as much anymore. I wonder if ppl really realize how many germs are out there that get transferred to their bodies in a day.
Let’s look at a shopping cart. Most ppl go to the grocery store at least once a week…so we’ll use a basic cart. A woman comes in and grabs a cart. She’s been working in her garden earlier and although she brushed her hands off she still has some dirt, insecticides and bacteria on her hands that transfers to the cart handle. She finishes shopping and puts the cart back. A guy comes in to pick up a few groceries for dinner after tending to his livestock all day and he’s brushed his hands off but still has some dirt, bacteria from the animals and God knows what else on his hands. He also transfers it to the cart handle. He finishes and the cart is put back again. An elderly woman grabs it next and she just finished doctoring a sore she has and even though she washed her hands afterwards she still picked up the dirty dressing after she washed her hands so she’s adding bacteria to the cart as well. Now a young couple get the cart and their baby, who’s sick, is drooling and coughing all over the cart handle. Now it’s your turn…you get all these ppl’s germs, you might handle produce (like tomatoes, cucumbers and such that aren’t wrapped) and you handle your credit/debit card, check book or wallet spreading the germs even further. You might rub your eye, (or God forbid) lick your fingers to help separate those plastic bags that you put your produce in and now you’ve picked up all the germs from others.
This isn’t just grocery carts but public phones, public toilets, other ppl’s cell phones, other ppl’s water bottles, door handles and others. I know you can’t stop every germ unless you live in a bubble. But how many ppl even try to cut back on the number of germs you come in contact with. There are ppl that say money is the dirtiest thing there is…yet you see ppl holding bills in their mouth while trying to put things in their purses.
Do you try to fight off germs when you are out and about or do you just take your chances? Do you ever wipe down the cart handle before you use it or just grab and go?

My grocery store, Krogers, has a dispenser of sanitized wipes next to the grocery carts. As I am able to use them to wipe the cart handle that is one less source of germs to worry about.

I have to ask Heather, is yours a Kroger's or a Rogers? This is a joke amongst my family. When we lived in downtown Cincinnati, there was a small Kroger's down there. It was so bootleg, that the "K" didn't even light up at night. So we started calling it Roger's. Now, whenever we go to one of the smaller Kroger's that doesn't have everything, or is in an urban neighborhood, those are designated as Roger's to us. The bigger ones are Kroger's lol.

This is a huge 24/7 Kroger with a gas station, which I love as I get 10 cents off every gallon of gas.

I just grab and go. I know it pays to be clean, but sometimes being too clean can be a problem too. Now, I'm not saying throw your sanitizer away, but when you come into contact with germs, your body builds a resistance to certain ones, therefore you don't get sick as often. Sanitizing your hands all of the time keeps your body from building a resistance, so you become somewhat dependent on the sanitizer. As soon as you go out without it, you get sick because you are susceptible to the germs that you never built a resistance for.

Well, I don't see me being that clean LOL After all, I'm around other ppl all day long...I just figure if I at least stop some of the germs perhaps I won't get as sick so easily. I mostly worry about elderly and children who don't have good immune systems to start with.

Right, its about having some sort of happy medium when it comes to germs. Don't expose yourself to too many, but at least have some lol.

I almost never get a shopping cart for this very reason. Plus, I don't like getting a cart because I feel as if I have to fill it. I'll grab one of those little, plastic baskets not many people handle or I'll bring my own bag. When my children were little and I put them in the cart I always put a blanket or something over the handle so they wouldn't touch it or worse yet, put their mouth on it.
I have been conscious of germs and my hands since my children were little. I try not to be too anal about it, just moderation.
Money is pretty germie too.

I can certainly see what you are saying, and when examining things on this sort of basis it makes me think ewww thats bad really. However, I do not really pay much attention to things like that.
I do not actually go out of my way to be germ free, I know in some situations I have to be careful and I do when I have to, other than that then no I do not fight germs. Mainly because when my eldest son was a baby I was very germ conscious, I reckon I could hear a germ enter my house back then. Everything would be scrubbed clean with in an inch of its life, my son was not allowed to go out playing and get too dirty, he was bathed every night. He was always sick, he would constantly have tummy bugs and coughs and would always be on antibiotics, and I used to think "how come he is always ill when I am so careful".
Of course it turned out I was too careful and too clean, and so I took a step back and stopped bleaching everything and disinfecting everything, stopped bathing every night, started letting him get dirty when he was out. The illnesses stopped, he was about 6 then, and he has never had another illness since. He is 16 now, and the same with my other kids, they are resilient too. When half their class is off with a tummy bug mine never get them.

I agree that you can be too clean at times and it can break down your resistance. I also think though that with all the sicknessess out there that I'm at least reducing my chances of picking up some of the sickness...especially during cold and flu season. I've seen ppl sneeze and cough right on vegetables, talk about ick. At least I know if my hands are clean that I'm not spreading anything...that's something.

I used to just go and not worry about the germs but lately I have been a lot more carefully about it. I also have the hand sanitizer in the car, in my purse, and at home People just dont realize how many germs can be passed on by not keeping their hands clean

The store that I shop at has antibacteria wipes to wipe the whole cart down. I have used them on occasion but I don't see much sense in that since you don't know all whose has handled the foods you put in your cart..I like to wait till I am through shopping then wipe my hands down. Have you ever thought of how many germs are on a pack of meat that hundreds of people may have picked up and looked at then layed back down..I feel that the grocery store is the germiest place. My niece who has CF can't even go to a store because of all the germs, her doctor doesn't reccommend it. My sister makes everyone wash their hands then use hand santizer she has several bottle a huge 64 ounce one in the bathroom. and 32 ounce on in the kitchen and others through out the house and they are always one on the coffee table and her purse because germs cn send my niece to the hospital for a month at a time. She just got out of the hospital recently after spending a month in there because my sister took her to the church cookout.

Those hand sanitizers don't really do anything except kill off the protective layer of bacteria that you always have on your skin. As soon as you touch something you are covered in germs again.
Also sanitizers are dangerous because the ingredients get into the water supply and over time bacteria will develop a resistant to them through constant exposure to minute amounts of antiseptics. This will just result in new breeds of "super bugs" - bugs that can't be killed by normal methods. This will present a real challenge to hospitals and meat processing plants other places that need to create an antiseptic environment for things like surgeries and food production.
The best thing you can do to prevent yourself from getting sick is to wash your hands on your way into the bathroom as well as on the way out. Wash your hands before touching your eyes or eating or brushing your teeth. You won't get sick through your skin, it's an amazing germ barrier. The trick is not to carry those germs into your mucous membranes where they can infect you.

I just grab and go - the germs just have to take their chances with my very efficient immune system

I just grab it and go. We can tell by looking at the handle of the cart if there is gunk on it and I have a small purse, not big enough to hold a hand sanitizer and besides the carts are outside. If they were inside the store, then there would be a hand sanitizer or some wipes near them. As it is when we go into the store, there is a pump there. And besides why would someone finish tending the cattle, or picking the stuff, without washing your hands afterwards. As for credit cards, we could be wiping our hands all day and not get anything done.
You can be careful but you do not have to go overboard.

I wash my hands before eating and I do use hand sanitizers. I sometimes spray lysol on my stuff. I don't wipe door knobs or cart handles in public or anything like that.

We have a bottle in each bathroom. It sits right next to the hand soap. That way people have a choice. I keep a bottle in my purse. I use wipes on the carts.

I know how many germs are out there and am always conscious of what I touch and wash my hands often. When my children were little I used to bring a little blanket with me to lay on the cart handle at stores.
I used to use bleach all the times. Now I'm happy to be able to buy antibacterial dish soap as well as hand sanitizer. I believe washing your hands in moderation helps keep you healthy.

Well, I am going to be honest and say that I have never thought about it to that degree, but I do now. lol Makes me want to keep a box of baby wipes with me to be able to wipe things down before touching them. I do keep the hand sanatizers with me in my purse though because there are times when you use the restroom and they are out of soap. We (my children and I) will wash our hands with water, dry them, and then use the hand sanatizer.

I keep hand sanitizer in a disreet place on my desk when I am working. It is our company policy to shake our clients hands when greeting them. I meet with atleast 5 clients a day more during our peak time (I am a seasonal tax preparer). I also wipe down my desk after each client leaves if I have time. I try to be as discreet about it as posible because I don't want to insult anyone but I also don't want to be sick all tax season either. I wash my hands frequently. The two places that are chock full of germs that we encounter almost daily are grocery carts and money. It is a good idea to wipe that grocery cart down before touching it.

I have a few bottles of hand sanitizer around the house, one in the car, one in my drawer at work and I make a point of using them quite frequently. I think they are a great idea and everyone should use them.
But reading this discussion has really made me think that you are right. Generally people don't keep their hands clean and there are bugs absolutely everywhere. Ick!
I was brought up on a farm, so I know I was exposed to a fair amount of bacteria and germs as a kid, and I think I now have a great immune system. Unlike my husband, whose mother was a little bit too efficient with the antibacterial sprays.
Balance definitely needed. Let's not be too over the top, but be careful where we can and the whole thing should balance out. I always make a point of washing my fruit and veg these days, especially stuff which I'm not going to cook and will be eaten raw. Bound to be lots of microbes breeding away where I can't see them.
Good idea about the handwipes for the shopping carts. Have not yet seen them anywhere in England, hope they come along soon.

I think sometimes thinking that way can make us to paranoid about life... it is good to know what is out there but sometimes to much info is bad ya know... i think just the normal daily handwashing and in between hand sanitizer should be ok... and like someone said before some germs are good..
