i am a non smoker, but i believe it depends on what type of job you are doing. what job you are involved in, but all in all i don't think an employer should tell their employees what they can do in their home. what do you think and please explain why or why not they should be fired.

I dont think they should be fired however if an employer is paying their health insurance, I think they should be made to pay more, because more than likely they are going to have more health issues because of their smoking. Now if an employee is lying about smoking and they are observed smoking somewhere I think some disciplinary measure should be employed.

I have to agree with this. I've read things about this very topic through the years. Smoking people lose more work time due to illnesses related to smoking. It causes less production for alot of businesses. The company in turn can lose money.

I don't think they should be fired for smoking at home.. That should be a law suit against the company you work for. What you do in your home is your business, if you can't be comfortable and do what you want why have a home. I can't understand people ways and laws these days. I can understand getting fired for smoking on the job when you have been warned and it is against the rules. But in you own home that's just plain outrageous.

I don't think you can fire someone for a bad habit unless you do it at work or in public places that are related directly to your work like the cafeteria.
Let them smoke outside, or perhaps even forbid them not to smoke in front of the door if it affects the image of the working space, but never fire someone because of it. That would be just as odd as firing someone for not going to the gym or eating to much fat food. People still have own lifes as well.
If you don't want it you can forbid it during work, but never outside work in my opinion.

I am also a non smoker but I do believe that people have certain rights. I can understand maybe banning smoking in certain establishments like the work place or a restaurant.
I don't believe a boss should have any say in what an employee does in his home even if it is smoking.

Hi! I think smoking is not a ground for firing an employee, unless it is against company rules and that the person repeatedly violates it. I saw it once on the TV show "Friends" and it's like there was this room or area where smokers can smoke. I don't know but maybe there are companies that provide this type of area too?

I am a Smoker but I do not think that my company or employer would fired me because I smoke, I think it is not fair for me as long as I can work properly in the place of work and cannot disturb the time of my work and my employer does not have the right to tell me what are the things I can do in my own places at home......

i dotn think that should be a part of getting a job. what we do in our homes is our business as long as it doesnt effect our jobs like coming in cause we are drunk etc then i dont see why they can say a word about it. it isnt illegal so therefore we dont light up in the placew of business then they shouldnt fire anyone. may be i dont like perfume and it makes me sneeze i am not going to fire someone cause they wear it.

It depends. If it's company p[olicy which was made known to an employee before he waS hired, then a company can fire an employee who violates this policy but of course witrh observation of due process and proper procedures such as warnings and notices with opportunity to defend himself. Most companies do not prohibit smoking but what they prohibit is smoking within the premises and again if an employee violates the rule, he must suffer the consequences.

Hi trisha, I think it depends in the company's rules! Smoker person should always respect the other people who do not smoke even though it will be hard for them. I think the boss just have to tell them not smoke in their office and those who smoke has to follow the rules. I don't think they should be fired because of smoking. This is just my opinion.
