Service stations a thing of the past?

Squeegees and paper towels inside see the attendant! I live in a small tourist town, crime isn't rampant but crack heads are. I was at the gas station fueling up the other day where I read the sign about paper towels. I was a little shocked. It is a sad day indeed when gas stations have to guard their paper towels and squeegees. I remember the day when you would pull up to get gas and the attendant would check the oil, check the tire pressure and was your windows and pump your gas. Then he would take your money and bring back change. Nowadays you can't even get a paper towel without going inside! What about where you live do they still have full service stations? We even used to have one that would vacuum your car for you, of course that has gone now too.

I'm old enough to remember actual full service stations where they offered to check your oil and cleaned your window while they left the nozzle filling up your car. They'd even check the air in your tires. If something was wrong with your car, you took it to the service station where you got gas because they fixed cars too...whatever the problem. You usually became friendly with the owner and his staff and you trusted them with your car. It was the "Fake" oil shortage crisis on the 1970's that lead to the development of self service. I don't know of any place in my area where they will pump gas unless you are disabled and request them to.

Even the self service annoys me these days! I long for the days when they would check the fluids and such and then even wish you a good day and actually mean it!

Ah yes, I'm afraid those days of cheerful service is over. However, last year when I drove through Oregon we stumbled upon a Mobile gas station, I believe, and they had over 10 guys who pumped your gas, took your money, brought back change, wash windows etc. We were in shock and didn't know what to do. Should we have tipped them??? Oh well, we never found another one in or out of that State.

I always liked Oregon, very nice people! I am the same way when I actually get customer service I am so blown away I don't know how to react.

Hi whywiki, Times sure have changed, I remember these things too, but we don't have them anymore. I can't remember one where they would vacuum your car, but there was probably one around at some time. You are right too that everything has to be kept locked away now. I wonder if things will change again sometime? Blessings.

I hope so, it would be great if it came full circle.
