First Interview

I have a job interview to go to today. No biggie, it's just my first ever real job interview. I am starting to feel nauseated and more nervous although a part of me is a bit calm as I think I've prepared enough for this interview. I know having that coffee just now won't help with my heartbeat rate which is going faster than usual. I talked to Boyfriend's mom yesterday and she told me to be confident and to take deep breaths, inhale and exhale.
What about you? What do you usually do to calm your nerves before a big interview/presentation/performance/date/whatever it is that makes you anxious?

I have only had one real job and that was at Arby's and I remember when I was going to my interview I was really nervous and I was not sure what to do,but I kept telling myself it would be okay, just to do my best and everything would be fine and I was right the interview went fine and I got the job,and the only thing I can find to do to calm me before something big I have to do like an interview or a presentation is to play video games, and dip because they both calm me down, and I also try not to think about it.

There's always something new to learn everyday. Today is snuff, the other day was dip. Thanks!

The better prepared you are, the less reason there is to be nervous. However, one must always understand that there are some things that are just out of our control, so if a particular thing ends up not turning out well, I just look upon it as yet another learning experience. No single event is really that important in the overall scheme of things, but good luck! Mom is right, you have to breathe!

Thanks! I guess this job hunt is a bit important for me right now as I've let things really go out of control in that arena.

Yes, I agree with all of this. :) "Be prepared." is always a good motto. But, sometimes things happen that are simply out of our control. Most of life is a learning experience. :) I definitely agree with breathing! Breathe in, breathe out. Good luck! :)

Hi Anne
Good Luck!
It's difficult to stay calm and just try to be myself. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But what else can I do! I used to be a very anxious and nervous kind. But now, with time much has been changed. I have learnt to let go and just be myself.
So, dear, just be yourself and keep us updated.
Good luck!

I'm the opposite. I used to be the carefree and confident kid/teenager... Now I get anxiety attacks more often than ever. I think I lost something in myself somewhere growing up so I have to find it again. Thanks!

I went to bed later than I intended to but I still woke up an hour before my alarm was supposed to go off. I think the alarm that woke me up today was my extra-fast beating chest and the worries in my head. Thank you my rooter tooter!

i also get nervous about an upcoming job interview. I just usually tell myself that I should do everything in my power to pass that interview. Deep breathing also helps:)

I guess you've been through the ordeal by now... shucks! I would want to help but well, I'm not sure either if this would help you, LOL!
Anyways, interviews (especially panel interviews) and presentations are usually "scary" for some. Why not? You'll be speaking in front of many people and they might ask you things you have no answer for or you haven't prepared for; you might also stammer and bummer! Lose the job or that good grade or that job promotion or that client altogether because of a lousy presentation!
Well, I say, we can never know what will happen on those very moment, but it wouldn't hurt to be ready for it. Yes, as easy as it might sound, preparation is still the best answer for one to be calm and confident during an interview.
I for one knows how important preparation is. I have been through lots of interviews and more of them are all in panel where 3 to 5 "scary-looking" employees were in front of me ready to torture me with those scary looks. But well, I've come prepared for the battle. I make sure I've made a thorough research about the company and the position that I'm applying for -- what's the job description, how to be effective in that job, etc. I also make sure I know my experiences by heart and not just let my resume' do the talking for by experience, no matter how many pages are your CV, these people will still ask you about it as if you haven't written everything in the paper; yup, you can't say "Read my CV, it's all there!", no, you can't do that.
Practicing your answer in front of the mirror will also help. No, I don't recommend memorizing your answers, you can at least gather those possible interview questions and formulate likely answers before going to the interview, at least you'll know what to say when you get there.
Also, honesty is always important in an interview. No, it doesn't mean that you should blurt out everything about yourself. What I mean is that, they are likely to ask technical questions about the job you'll be applying for and if your preparation wasn't enough to cover that question, you should give them a straight, honest answer like "My apologies but I don't have any idea about that, but be rest assured that I am more than willing to learn that and be an expert on that field someday if it'll really help me succeed in my job" Yup, works all the time for me!
Hmm... I think I've been blabbing here, sorry for taking much of your time, Gee! I would want to say more but I guess I've given you the general idea. I admit I'm not an expert on this, but hey! I'm talking from experience! Good luck in all your endeavors! God bless.

Thanks for all the ideas. I try to be as prepared as I could but still can't get over the nerves. But I will definitely use the apology part and willingness to learn and be the expert... unfortunately today I think I sounded more on the curt and giggly side. I don't know why.
