We moved into a house in May. This was my Grandparents house but was sold when my Grandfather passed away 5 years ago. When it came up to be rented I wanted it. So when we moved in there were a few little things that needed to be fixed like the thermostat needed to be put in for the heating and air, a vent in the kitchen. No problem within the first 2 weeks that was done. But the kitchen sink was clogged up and when any water did go down it, it drained all over the kitchen floor. the bathtub had NO cold water. the inside hadn't been painted (black hand prints all over the walls). When my husband said something to the guy who was doing the repairing about the the plumbing issues we were told to fix it ourselves. So we did. I have the $350 bill from the plumber. When we first moved in the roof leaked a little when it rained. Called the reality company and told them the roof leaked. They said no problem we will have someone right out there to fix it. Now it is almost 4 months later and still no one has fixed the roof after we have reminded them multiple times. The roof now leaks really bad. The sheetrock is falling down, the paint is peeling off the walls (btw we ended up painting ourselves), and water is pouring out of the smoke detecter which is wired into the electric not run off batteries. About another 6 inches or so and it will be pouring into the light fixture. I have buckets and towels catching the rain but it is still funning down the hall into the bathroom. I don't want nor have the money to move again. What am I supposed to do. After moving in i found out the members of my family had rented from this man before and ended up having to take him to court because he wouldn't fix the things in the house like the roof. They house across the street from me he also owns and the windows are busted in it and he still rented it out. Those people have been there for about 2 months or so and no one has been there to do any of their repair work either. What can happen with the rain coming out the electic smoke detector?

WOW! this is so awful ! i guess it was a "romatic" idea to move into your grandfather's home. i would have liked it, too. but, now the landlord, or realty company, are really testing your bank account and your safety and your patience. i would make sure to photograph any damages. it sounds like you will only be able to recoup the money by taking him to small claims court, too. a friend of mine once told me, to turn in a landlord you only need to claim that you have seen a spark when you plugged some appliance in, or been zapped when you did it. i don't know if this is true or not. i think it's possible if rain comes through like a overhead light or fan, or smoke detector if it's electric. i would also respond to him in writing and keep a copy of everything, too.
