Maple Leaf Canada is facing a major law suit because of tainted products. Apparently the bacteria Listeria has been found in the ready to eat turkey luncheon meat and other products sent out from the Ontario plant. There has been at least one death and a few people became sick in ontario and british columbia as a direct result of eating their luncheon meat.
Maple Leaf has issued a public apology and have called back the tainted products.
This is scary folks,

I used to take luncheon meat to work but that was before we moved to our house which is not far from meat market and they don't sell luncheon meat there. I read on MSN news that another meat sandwich is recalled I didn't read it through not sure which company and where.

That is serious! This is the first time I heard of such news as it never happened in my country. I've been keeping away from luncheon meat, ham, bacon etc because of the cancer inducing preservative sodium nitrite. The preservative prevents the growth of bacteria but it is a confirmed carcinogen. So the question is do you want to die faster from the bacteria or die slower from cancer? With a no way out, no feasible solution, I've never laid my hands on canned meat for a long long time.

It seems we're hearing more and more of tainted/contaminated foods...if it isn't e.coli, then it's salmonella, or Listeria. So far I haven't heard of any contaminated luncheon meats here in America, but a fellow MyLotter gave me the heads up that many of the pre-made salads, such as tuna, potato, etc that one can buy at delis are now showing to have Listeria. Also, a recall was made recently of those frozen Hot Pockets pizza products...think they were also cited having Listeria

Oh as a PS--not I'm not in the habit of eating luncheon meats as I find them way too salty anyway...the only thing I might get once in a blue moon is Roast Beef slices ..but I might stay away from that too.

I haven't bought any lately, but I have eaten some sandwiches with various types of cold meet at local calfes and delis nearby. I am going to be very careful about buying that stuff in the groccery stores, with this stuff going on. What is happening to food these days? Seems not a day goes by where we don't hear about some evil illness coming from the food we buy and eat.

I love luncheon meat. But personally have never eaten Maple Leaf. Well I guess I have I just don't know about it. I have never bought it though. I perfer to buy the fresh deli meats that they cut for your at the counter. I have never bought any prepackaged meats before. As well we get meats done up for us at the butcher. I know that this is really going to affect alot of people thankfully it doesn't affect me any.

Mostly in this region of the world the ready to eat packed meat is not liked. How ever ready to eat chicken products of the local manufacturers are available in the market place and peoples used to enjoy it. If such an snag has been detected the whole lot of the luncheon meat should be destroyed and the company should withdraw from the market the entire lot and find out where the error was.

WowW I do not eat luch meats that often. But I do sometimes. I am not sure of what all the brand names are. I am so sorry that folks are getting sick.. It is so sickening that you can't just buy healthy foods for your family. I wish that we could trust the grocery store and producers of foods. If it not pesticides. bacteria.. good grief, it is always something.
I really think that lots of folks will be going back to growing there own foods, and maybe getting some farm animals..or just buy off their friends.

I don't eat the Maple Leaf Brand, but I do eat luncheon meats. It is scary to hear about stuff like this cause it then has you wondering about the stuff you have in your own fridge. Well I do hope that no more deaths come of this and that everything get under conrol and all of the tainted products disposed of. And goodness sakes I hope kids don't get ahold of it and eat it. I love turkey, chicken and other types of luncheon and by it regularly. I guess you can never be to carerful..

Our food supplies are always in question. As much as they are handled anything could happen at some point along the process to our tables. I have heard of the Listeria problem in Canada and intend on studying it when I can. Being aware and practicing good food handling skills can be very helpful in keeping us in better health and alive. Growing our own foods is even better yet.
Yes we eat some processed lunch meats although normally we eat real things not kits, processed food stuffs etc.

I recall hearing about this here in Minnesota recently as well. I have never been one that rally likes lunch meats. I seldom eat lunch actually. When I do it is usually out to eat for me on weekends. We here in the States have had our share of various tainted meats of all sorts this past year as well. I do not recall lunch meats being tainted here though.

Is this like a tinned product or packaged?
It really doesn't matter much since I don't eat the tinned at all and very little packaged stuff because of my allergies.
I do think that its a shame that these things happen to companies, and even more to the poor people that eat them.

Sure I do eat luncheon meat and in fact, I love it very much!
It might sound strange to you but I much prefer luncheon meat to escargots, abalones, ice-cream or whatever.
Over here in Singapore, there were a similar case regarding imported luncheon meat from China too. Many labels were pulled off the shelves and price rocketed up during that period of time.
The resulting after-math is a sorrier state, it seems though the vendors are trying to bring in from more diversified sources.

Oh that is bad and so sad that someone had to die. We do buy lunch meat since my husband takes ham sandwiches to work for lunch but not Maple Leaf brand. I also got me some olive loaf but had to get it out of the deli and not sure what brand it was.
Thank you for the notice.

now two brands of maple cheese is infected, and they have been spotted here in quebec, so it is spreading.
