Hi LouiseKnittel... As far as I know, bats are nocturnal for one thing. Apparently they cannot handle bright light. Secondly, I have to agree with other mylot responders, in that they are basically harmless to humans...use a type of sonar that bounces off their prey, allowing them to determine how far away their dinner is...mostly bugs. Though some have been known to eat small rodents, like mice. Yes, they can and have been subject to rabies...although according to a TV show I watched on them a couple of weeks ago, this is becoming more uncommon these days. My question to you is that you must have a reason for asking. Have you seen some or one lately? I totally like them and think they're really cool creatures. commanderxo

I have also heard that they carry rabies it is good to hear that, It is less common these days! I never knew that they eat some rodents. I like the idea of them eating bugs.. I had a picture of one and was wondering about them. I find it very interesting that they cannot see and can fly!

I know somethings. Contrary to what's been said, bats don't eat just bugs. There are species that eat fish, fruit, nectar, and even blood. They use sonar to find their food, similar to the sonar and echo-location methods of whales and dolphins. It's a high pitched frequency that is out of human hearing range. Although bats are carriers of rabies, it's very hard to tell when you've been bitten as a result of their small teeth. The vampire bat also produces a chemical similar to what misquotes do, which they inject into their victim, not only to dull the pain, but also to keep the blood from clotting. Insect eating bats are highly beneficial, in that they can eat their own weight in bugs in a night. They are one of the key species that helps keep mosquito numbers in check. Bats are the only mammals that can fly, and their wings are actually modified hands, with their fingers modifies into the wing joints. I could go into more and more details, but I'm not sure how much you want to know.

I had bats out on the farm I grew up on...The do make a slight squeaking sound, They sleep upside down during the day and hunt at night. They eat bugs. They aren't out to hurt people like they show in the movies unless you won't leave them alone...then they won't leave you alone. I could go ito the barn at anytime day or night and I have never been bit by one or swarmed or chased by them. They are ugly creatures though!

freefrogging- yes that is what it sounds like exactly. I was trying to remember. A squeaking sound. The one that confronted us was more than likely rabid though we never tested it, because, as you say they aren't the type of animal that goes after people normally

I love bats, I think that they are really cute creatures. They do make sounds that humans can hear, like someone else said. We have quite a few living near my house and you can hear them some nights. It's like a high pitched squeaky sound, kind of like a creaky door!

Every night, in our yard at dusk, a bat puts on a beautiful air show for us swooping around our heads. Yes it does make a high pitched chirping sound to locate food and it also helps it not to run into things. Their sight isn't very good. This web site has some cool facts http://bugspray.com/catalog/bats/bat8.html I hope everyone can learn to appreciate the nedd for these great little creatures.

Bats locate their prey, and any obstacles by echolocation--kind of like radar that we use. They make sounds that human beings cannot hear. The sound bounces off of objects in their path and returns to them, helping them judge distance. Most of them are nocturnal. They can carry rabies. They eat an astounding number of insects, like mosquitoes, daily. The vampire bat exists, but is interested in the blood from cattle. They are rodents that fly. Guess that is most of what I know about bats.

They make really high pitched sounds. They mostly eat fruit and insects. The vampire variety is the exception. They fly. They're mostly nocturnal. And my mother-in-law hates them. That's probably the extent of my knowledge.
