How are the birds in your area?

We have lots of bird houses in our back yard. This year,we only have one hummingbird feeder. We usually have two, but I took one to my Mother and my husband moved the other one from our window out to a tree. So I can't see it as good as I did when it hung directly outside my Den window. But the hummingbirds finally found it this year.
Right now, it seems to be the time when they really come to feed just before they start moving out. August seems to be the biggest month for visits from these little birds. They are so small you can miss them. But, when I stand in the window and watch them, you can see them fluttering among the leaves and you really have to strain to see their little bodies upon a branch of the tree. And it tickles me to see one of those little guys trying to hold off the rest of them from the feeder. They get really mad and will chase intruders off in a heart beat. Makes me wonder if they are holding them off so their own spouse or brood can make their way to the feeder and not have to be hit with all these other hummingbirds. But it is really a show when they start buzzing around like that. I really hate to see them leave this Fall. I'll have to wait too long to see those beautiful little birds.

We normally have 3 hummingbird feeders on our front porch, but the winds got 2 of ours. We still had plenty of humming birds. They are very fun to watch!

That bird nest would drive me nuts at 5AM! We haven't ever had any that close to our bedroom windows. But, they continually build a nest above our light on our front porch. My husband tries to make sure he gets there before they lay eggs and get it down. It leaves a mess of mud on our porch and light.

We have such a variety of birds here that it's astounding really.
We even have our own provincial hummingbird - though I must say they aren't very colorful. They are a joy to watch however. Right now they are in migration but now that my asters are blooming there are more in the garden than I've seen all summer. We must by in their flight path.
I too will miss them until next Spring.

We have all kinds of birds here, too. But I just love that little hummingbird. We only see the ruby-throated hummingbird here, although there is one other that comes to Alabama, just hasn't been at my house. A friend has seen it in North Alabama, though.

Humming birds. I love to see them too, once upon a time I used to have a beautiful garden with gorgeous roses and many more exotics plants and the humming birds would come by and visit me too.
Besides the feeder, do you have other plants that attracts them?

I can only hear them in the morning outside my window. so I don't know what kind of birds they are. BUt if I would see them, I wouldn't know what kinds it is. They sound sweet though and it makes every morning prefect. By the sound of their singing I could imagine they are small birds like the ones in the Cinderella Disney movie.

Hi Barb,
I've noticed a lot of blue jays in our yard for a while. I don't remember so many (and they are noisy) before. We live in central Oregon on 5 acres. We do have quail, but haven't seen many babies this year and that is also odd.
On another note, I went out my front door yesterday and there were 9 deer in my front yard - 4 babies. They are not allowed to be hunded in our area so they are not very afraid of people. They just looked at me and continued eating our plants. I talk to them and they stop to listen and then go back to their eating. They do eventually move away slowly if I stay too long. I have no flowers as they love to eat them. However, I love seeing them and relating to them more than the flowers.

I love blue jays. We haven't seen that many this year in our yard, though. We have deer here, too. I've taken pictures out my bedroom window of deer, eating tame crab apples from our tree. I have come home at night and seen 6 deer right at our garage. But when I got closer in the drive, they took off for the woods above our house. My husband used to put out corn to draw them here. We once saw a huge buck. They are plentiful in our area, too. We've had them hit and killed on the road right in front of our house. There is plenty of woods and pastures for them to be going back and forth to, and they will jump right in front of a car. Two did it to us the other night right at dusk and we barely saw them in time.

I too have 1 hummingbird feeder and I just now started to see them coming to feed. I love those little birds they absolutly amaze me with the way they buzz right by you not even being scared like other species of birds. I would love to find a feeder with a suction cup so that I can attach it to my living room window.

You might could find one at Lowe's or some place like that. We have always had two hanging right at our Den windows. But my husband got tired of having to clean bird poop off the screens and windows. But I could see them so easily just sitting in my chair. I told him next year the feeder would be right back where it had always been. The hummingbirds had a hard time finding it in a different place.

This is the first year I've ever put out a hummingbird feeder and I'm so glad I did! They are such a delight to watch!
I was on my deck watering my plants. I have some plants just below the deck (our deck is about 8' off the ground), so I was leaning on the railing watering them when something like a very large bug buzzed past my face. I jumped back a foot or two (I really don't like big bugs) and noticed that it was a hummingbird!
My feeder is hung from a hanger off the corner of the deck, so I was only a few feet away from it. After noticing that it was a hummingbird, I slowly went back to the railing and watched it. Mr. Hummingbird was there first. Once he left, Mrs. H came for a drink. Then, either she came back or there's another female in the area who decided it was her turn. A few minutes later, Mr. H came back again, buzzed in front of my face for a few seconds like he was checking me out, then went to the feeder and helped himself.
I can say this about the little guys, they certainly are gutsy! They are truly some amazing little creatures, too! For their little wings to move so fast they make a humming sound, you'd think they'd be exhausted in no time! It's no wonder they're always drinking nectar... they need the energy!

you can only see crows, pigeons & sometimes eagles. i never enjoy watching them but pigeons are to some extent good. but i have always wished that if only i could fly so high like them. there will be a feeling of freedom & no borders to stop me. there are times when i wished that i could fly non stop.

Its been years since I have seen sparrow, as I used to remember my childhood where all the sparrows used to stay on my neighbor house terrace and I used to admire them from my window, Its been years since I saw a sparrow in my city. But I could see many eagles here now a days......
