Tragedy in a Small Town

I live in a small town in rural Missouri and just wanted to tell y'all about this family. Monday evening, a mother and her two kids were driving down the highway and the mother, from what I understand, was speeding and turned her car over. First of all, she was driving a convertable, second, the children, ages 3 and 6 weren't wearing restraints of any kind. Well, they were thrown from the car and all being in critical condidtion were airlifted to the closest hospital. The three year old died in the helicopter on her way to the hospital. I haven't heard how the mother and the other child are yet. Last I heard, though, it didn't look good. I also heard, and this was from a reliable source so I know it's true, that this mother is a known drug user. If she recovers from this accident, she will, more than likely, be charged with manslaughter. On a personal note, this is something I could never, ever live with. My guilt and concience would eat me alive. What do y'all think? Do you think this mother should be charged? It's a horrible tragedy, an innocent child is gone because of her recklessness. I personally do not know this family but apparently the one who relayed the story to me knows them, that's why I wrote what I did. I just can't believe a mother would not use restraints when driving a convertable..it's just beyond me........

I always make the kids wear a seatbelt, but sometimes I forget to. It really makes you stop and think. I grew up when there were not seatbelts in a car. I try to remember.

Exactly, and so did I. But nowadays, there is no excuse..or shouldn't be anyway.

That is just awful! I would not want to take my children in a convertible to begin with. I can't believe she would do that! I have 4 children and I make sure that everyone has their seatbelts buckled before we leave the driveway or go anywhere. My kids are from 17 down to 3. And my older children fight over who is going to "buckle up" the baby. They all know how to fasten her carseat and I always check it before leaving when they buckle her in. She does not undo her restraints thank goodness. But one time I forgot to buckle myself, which is extremely rare for me as "Mama - Buckle Up!". I buckle my seatbelt before starting the car. My 9 year old daughter yells So, I am so happy that I have instilled safety into my children from the beginning. I remember when I was little a lot of cars didn't even have seatbelts. I would never go anywhere without the seatbelts for us, if the car doesn't have them then I can just walk. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

When my kids were little, seatbelts weren't required but as they got older, they started making it mandatory. My kids wore them without complaints and now they won't go anywhere or let anybody in their cars without wearing their seatbelts. Their kids are all in carseats too. I don't see where there is any excuse NOT to use them.

More than likely the mother will survive and the older child will die. I mean if you were thrown from the car, and possibly landed on the gravel or in a ditch or hard ground it would not look good. I would never allow a child in a car without a seat belt or booster seat. I do hope the older child survived but if he or she and the mother survive, I do hope the state takes the child away and give he or she to a relative or someone who at least has common sense. Because that mother sure did not care about her children and was only thinking of her fix or were to get her next buyer.

It's so sad that an innocent childs life was lost because of a mothers recklessness. The children should have been in restraints and carseats, espcically in a convertible. Why don't people think? ugh. Just a sad sad story.

I believe it's child endangerment too. I mean, putting them in a convertable with no restraints? How hard is that to figure out???

I agree with you, heaven11. We do our best to protect our own children, then somebody this careless comes along and ends the lives of her children. It's awful...just awful...

This story breaks my heart. My heart goes out to the family and the little three year old. I have four kids of my own and I could never imagine them not wearing seat belts. I don't know whether or not this would have helped the little girl to live but it would have be a good thing to know that she at least was trying to protect her babies by putting them into restraints. It was her responsibility to protect her children and apparently she failed in doing so. God bless that family.

Yes, I agree. You would think, being a mother, you would get those babies buckled in, especially in a convertable. I still shudder when I think about it.

How horrible! I pity those kids. They were just so unlucky to have such an irresponsible mother! . I drive really fast (80 km per hour on my motorcycle) but when I have kids with me I can be the slowest driver in town with around 20 km per hour speed. That was really really irresponsible of the mother to do that!

I'm sure the majority of us think of a Mother as someone who's nurturing and protective. It breaks my heart when one is the complete opposite. For one to be so reckless with their own children is baffling to me. I thought it was common sense that children were supposed to be restrained in cars now days. Especially children that young! What was she thinking? If she does survive this you can only hope that she feels grief stricken and remorseful. As would any real loving parent should be. Of course she should be charged. What she did goes beyond just making a silly little error that so many parents may do when they're bringing up their children. She has killed one by her own stupidity and left the other severly injured. There are laws put in place for this exact reason.

I totally agree with ya. I read all the time about parents leaving their children in cars during the day while they work and the excuse is they "forgot" about them, which is totally ludicrous to me, but putting them in a car with no restraints...well there is no excuse in my book....

It sure is. Anytime a child is involved in something like this, it's sad.
