I just wonder because it is almost winter and I would like to have that nice scents of candles anywhere in out house. I am not familiar with the best kind that others are using. I am not fond of buying it since I am here in this country.. because in the place where I come from I am not using scented candles though we have plenty of it in the market. I am not also staying home before, I am always out for work but now that I am a home buddy, I want to have good scents in the house. Could anyone give me ideas of what kind of scented candles are good. I can buy some in the dollar store cheap... but I just don't know the best kind. thanks....

Bebs,be careful about scented candles because most commercial candles are made from paraffin which when burned have been discovered that like most air fresheners, they contain and release potentially harmful chemicals that disrupt the body's hormonal systems and cause other health problems in people exposed to them. They also emit small amounts of organic chemicals that are also potentially harmful. Actually I myself could make my own scented candles because I am very fond of them so I attended a seminar on how to make them and from then on I started making my own for my home. Then I also started researching and learned so many things about candle making. Those candles made of paraffin should never be burned inside the home because you can smell and absorb the harmful chemicals as earlier stated. But don't despair there are healthy ones but they are much more expensive if you will compare from those made from paraffin and other synthetic materials. These are the Soy-based candles which are made from plant waste and emit less soot than the paraffin variety.then there is also the Beeswax candles as another good alternative. Always look for varieties that use only pure plant essential oils instead of synthetic chemicals. So for my home, those made from paraffin were only for decorative purposes and those for burning for aromatherapy are those made of beeswax or soy-wax. I hope these have been useful to you. Have a nice day!

Oh really? I should have give you the best response for this but it's late... Seriously, I gain some insights in your reminder. How would I know that the candles have paraffin? Sometimes there are no labels on candle jars that you could base your judgment. I read from previous responses about soy based candles and maybe that is what you mean. I am very glad to have you as a friend because I learned a lot from you. I would remember that. Paraffin based candles are harmful to health. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Are they not labeled? Oh I am doing my own candle so I am not aware of those in the market. But one way to easily distinguish is that soy based and beeswax are expensive... a lot more expensive than the paraffin wax. Soy wax creates a "crystal-like" wax. They also feel much more natural and soft to the touch.*Paraffin candles tend to look a bit plastic. The beeswax actually does not even need scenting because they are by itself sweet smelling! The beeswax candles emit beneficial negative ions that actually clean the air around them as they burn! On the other hand the Paraffin wax is made from petroleum sludge at the bottom of oil refinery barrels. When it burns it emits nasty black smoke that stains your walls and ceiling. It makes the same pollution as the diesel engine. It does not just stain your walls and ceiling but also damage your lungs. Most paraffin candles use cheap wicks that contain lead and other heavy metals. While the beeswax and soy wax use 100% cotton only.

Well if you want to know what the best candles are to use is the Yankee Candles, you can find them in hallmark stores and any kind of specialty shops, they can be expensive, but they are really good and they last a long time. I try use those when I can and when I have the money for them, I like the strawberry one the best, and in the fall time, they come out with the Spiced Pumpkin, and the Cinnamon Apple ones, those are good too. The other candles I like to use and they aren't expensive are the ones you get at Wal-mart, its their Mainstays brand, the one I use all the time is the Black Cherry one, you can smell it all over your house. I love candles, I have them everywhere, I am interested in learning how to make them so I can make my own.

Just embarrass to ask her. thanks.

I think scented candles are a individual preference. I personally don't like them. I like to leave the windows open and let the smells of nature waft on through the house just to enjoy. Even if it's cold I have a tendancy to have at least one window or screen open to let the smell of fresh air permeate the home.

To be honest, I do not think scented candles are healthy. My dad has burned them sometimes in the basement when he is working down there, and, without fail, I will smell something that reminds me of Raid, yes, the bug killer. I can't explain this, since they are not kind enough to list the ingredients on their candles, but smell is known to be the most effective memory jerker, so I can't be wrong, it DOES remind me of Raid. I believe he has yankee candles and a couple of other brands. Obviously this concerns me. If I am smelling a toxic chemical in small amounts, over time it is going to have some negative effects. I don't know why they don't have to list what they put in them, some people are going to have allergies to certain things and deserve to know before they buy and have a bad experience. I would stay away from scented candles and go fresh flowers or natural potpourri, those have better scents anyway since they are plant and flower scents.

yes i agree with you that there are scented candles that have dangerous chemicals in it but tp be safe, use the plant base candle. They are made in soy and they are more expensive than ordinary scented candles..

My feeling is, if you pick it up in the store and can hardly smell it, you're not going to be able to smell it when it's burning either. Sometimes the cheap dollar store ones are okay but really it is kind of a matter of you get what you pay for with scented candles. Soy candles are generally better (and more expensive.)

hi philjas, thanks for the advice. You are right because one time I bought scented candle in dollar store, I can not smell anything when I lighted it. So, you must be sure to smell the scent of it before buying anything like that. Soy candles? I'll try to look for it. thanks...

I really enjoy the Gold Canyon candles, you don't even have to light them to have their scent in the room for you. Go to my profile to find a link for a website you can order online for these candles. There are too many scents to list here. Some are called Mrs. Claus' Kitchen and Pumpkin Pie.

I also like Yankee Candles, but I usually buy Old Virginia because they have a terrific long lasting scent and are made from soy wax which doesn't smoke. Root is also a good brand with a nice strong scent. These all have a wide variety of scents.
